Twelve - Bitter Truth

"Finally realized it was me all along?"

I looked up when I heard his voice. Xander stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the door. How had I not hear him come in?

I stood straighter than I had before as I looked him over. Instead of wearing a casual outfit like the ones he would usually wear at the asylum, he was neatly dressed in a tightfitting outfit consisting of a black dress shirt and black pants. The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up to his elbows, displaying his strong arms and the faint veins that slightly jutted out of his skin here and there. I couldn't help but gape as I took him in even when the situation was extremely inappropriate. He was so tall and lean it was impossible not to stare.

"You- but how- I'm-"

He interrupted with a deep chuckle that sent my body heating up as though the room was on fire. I knew it wasn't the fireplace that had suddenly warmed my body inside out. "Come, Ophelia, sit with me. I'm sure you must have a lot of questions." He guided me toward the couch in front of the fireplace but I was quick to shake my head.

His silver eyes glinted when I took a step back from him. I could smell him even when he stood at the far end of the room. He smelt sweet and earthy. He didn't smell of those medications they gave him at the asylum.

"No. Why did they let you out? Why did Adeline let you out?" I wanted so badly to yell, to prove to him this wasn't just a little game he could play. I wanted to be angry, but how could I be angry without being afraid? He had kidnapped me and took me into this massive mansion that I'm almost sure is not his, he has a reputation of trying to kill his mother and cousin and somehow managed to convince Adeline to let him out of the mental institution, I was alone in a room with him, he was much bigger and stronger than I was.

"Come sit and I will answer your questions."

It bothered me that he was so calm and relaxed. "Just answer my questions, damn it. Why did you kidnap me?" I snapped, frustrated and angry. "Where am I and what do you want from me? If you want money I swear I can arrange something up-"

"Humour me, Ophelia." He interjected, eyes gleaming with something mildly dangerous in it. "Look around you. I have an office bigger than your apartment alone. Do you think I need money?"

I gritted my jaw. He was so arrogant and boastful. "Are you gonna murder me? Is that it?"

I could tell he was mentally laughing at me by the amused look in his bright eyes and the small smirk playing at his lips. "I'm not a murderer. If you could just talk to me in a calm manner then maybe you could hear my explanation to all of this." He walked closer, but I was quick to shift away. He walked away from me to unlock the door leading to the balcony.

The breeze whispered through my hair as the balcony door was opened. I could hear the fireplace still crackling at the back.

"I won't hurt you, Ophelia. You have my promise. Please come outside with me. I can see you need some fresh air." His voice was genuine and promising and I couldn't help but somehow entirely trust the words that came out of his mouth. Something inside me was sure he wouldn't hurt me.

I was only in a robe with my feet bare but I couldn't care less. No matter how much I didn't want to admit it, I knew he was right. I did need some fresh air. The quiet space of his office felt suffocating as soon as he had entered the room.

He urged me to sit on a chair but I passed him instead and stood leaning against the balcony railing, far away from him. The ground and air were cold but it seemed to relieve my stress a little bit.
