The main protagonist probably isn't going to be the character dying. It's therefore important to focus on how the character death affects your protagonist, emotionally.
If is is the death of the protagonist, it's going to happen right at the end, linking to the resolution of your story structure.
Deaths are often sad and can be terrifying. They can be dramatic, unavoidable, predictable or drawn-out
Dramatic deaths are effective: sudden/unexpected.
A slow and sad death is classic and can be romantic.
Overall, when writing a scene where a character dies, main character or not, you should make it surprising.
Pack it with emotion, feeling, heartbreak, tears and eventually peace.
