If readers can't identify with your protagonist, they'll probably loose interest in the plot.

Avoid unrelatable character traits like be arrogance or having a perfect life, for your main character.

A relatable, likable character is a broken one. Make readers sympathise with a character.

Or presenting an arrogant character with a perfect life which quickly switches to 'change' their traits in some way.

Build up the complex layers of a characters personality.

Early action reveals who the character is to the reader. The audience isn't going to find out much about your character if all they do in the first chapter is go to school. But, if they wake up trapped in an unfamiliar concrete room, the reader will learn what type of person they are.

Character development should happen naturally, tied to a progressing plot.

If you have a complete, whole, unique character at your finger tips developing them shouldn't be too hard.

But, if you still need help there's also chapters on Character Design + Traits and Character Consistency + Distinctive Traits

I've noticed in demographics that there's such a diverse audience here.
