CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Her back was straight with tension. Her arms and legs were crossed while seated. Her whole body tense with pressure from both hatred and anxiety while she faced Carmen, who was unlike her, relaxedly seated in her front.

Tinanggal kaagad ni Reuben sa trabaho ang babae matapos ng insidente noong nakaraan. Bumalik na siya sa pagiging sekretarya ng asawa at hindi pa man nag-iinit ang office chair niya sa muli niyang pagbabalik ay nakatanggap na siya ng hindi kaanya-anyayang tawag sa telepono na siya ang madalas na sumasagot para kay Reuben. Galing iyon kay Carmen.

The woman purposely called that landline because she knew she will be the one to answer it. Carmen told her that she wanted to meet with her. That there was something she needed to tell her. Something important. Something she deserved to know. Kaya ngayon ay magkaharap silang dalawa, magkasama sa isang mesa sa loob ng susyaling restaurant kung saan siya nito niyayang makipagkita.

"You got something to tell me?" she immediately asked wanting to ease her itching curiosity.

Carmen smiled a smile she didn't like. "I don't think you're ready to hear this."

"Cut the crap and be fast about it."

"Buntis ako. Si Reuben ang ama."

An abrupt laughter came from her throat. It was as if she blurted a laugh in a mocking way that she didn't actually intended.

"Bakit ka tumatawa? Hindi ka naniniwala?"

She shook her head. It wasn't that she thought she was only bluffing. Kaya siya natawa ay dahil hindi niya inasahan na ganoon kabigat na bagay ang ibabagsak nito sa kanya. If it was another hideous prank life decided to pull on her, she couldn't tell anymore. Parang sunud-sunod ang mga bulilyaso ni Reuben sa kanya, na ayon dito ay hindi naman nito ginagawa o sinasadya para saktan siya.

First was the lipstick stain on his collar. Second were the pictures of him with Carmen—pictures of him kissing her, or Carmen kissing him like he said. And now, Carmen had just told her personally that she was pregnant with his child. The woman had dropped another bomb on her but she decided she will fiercely face it head on with her chin held high.

"May pruweba ka ba?"

Dumukot ito ng papel sa purse bag nito. Nakatupi iyon nang iabot nito iyon sa kanya.

Her facial features were serene and calm as she accepted it. Her movement fluid like she had total prowess on her composure. Although deep inside, she was starting to get cranky.

She opened the folded paper. It was a pregnancy test result.

"Delayed ako kaya naisipan kong magcheck gamit ang home-kit PT. It was positive. Nagpatest na rin ako sa clinic para sigurado. That's the result. Still positive."

Magaan na ngiti ang ibinigay niya sa kaharap. Magaan kung tingnan pero punung-puno ng pang-uuyam. Dumako ang titig niya sa tiyan nito. Pipis pa iyon kaya hindi masabi sa pisikal na nagdadalang-tao nga ito.

Gusto niyang lukutin at punitin ang test result pati na rin ang mukha nito. But she kept her calm and simply said, "Thank you for telling me this. Tatanungin ko muna si Reuben."

"Tingin mo ba nagsisinungaling ako sayo?" Tila nainsulto ito sa sinabi niya. "You don't know me. You don't know who I am to him. Kung tatanungin mo siya, hindi rin siya magsasabi ng totoo sayo."

"Tama ka. Hindi nga kita kilala. But I have an idea who you are to him and you don't know me either. Sabihin mo sa akin kung ano'ng gusto mong mangyari nang matapos na ang usapang 'to."

"Gusto kong iwan mo siya. Bigyan mo ako ng pagkakataong buoin ang pamilya namin."

Kumawala ulit ang halakhak sa bibig niya dahil mukhang nagpapatawa talaga ang babaeng kaharap niya. "I guess tama nga ako. Hindi mo talaga ako kilala. Nagpapatawa ka kung iniisip mong gano'n kadali ko lang ibibigay sayo ang asawa ko."
