35-Aftermath

It was hours before we made it to the hospital. By time the fire department arrived on the scene, the left side of the Founder's Hall was nothing more than a pile of wood. Thankfully, some things managed to be salvaged, so I didn't lose my phone or my favorite sweatshirt. After the fire department arrived, Sheriff Stilinski came with his whole police force. He was adamant, demanding to know all about Scott and Isaac and the hunters, who they were and what they were doing.

In the end, the published story was that they (the tomb vampires) were just a small group of hometown 'terrorists' determined on bringing Beacon Hills to the ground. Scott and Isaac tried to stop them, and in turn were almost killed. The terrorists were caught in their own fire and perished. As for the remaining hunters, they fled the scene after Gerard was killed, and with luck, we'd never see them again.

While Sheriff Stilinski thinks we're still hiding something, he let it go, glad that we were all alive. Then the paramedics swarmed in, carrying us away on stretchers. The doctors at the hospital were all surprised that Isaac and Scott made it out alive, as they consumed enough smoke to kill three normal humans. A miracle, they said.

As for me, the doctors wrapped up my feet and gave me a pair of crutches: I'd burned the bottom of my feet and had to keep off them for a few days. My right wrist was sprained from when Stiles stopped me from falling, but other than that, I was completely fine. Stiles had minor scrapes and bruises, but thankfully no other serious injuries.

He sits next to me on my hospital bed, holding my hand and tracing circles on it with his thumb. There's a light knock on the door and Scott pokes his head through.

"How are you?" He asks. He closes the door behind him as he steps into the room.

I nod. "I'm good." My voice catches at the end, but everybody pretends not to notice.

Scott looks up at me, his brown eyes sad. "Have you talked to mom?"

A pang shoots through my heart. Mom came to the hospital, but she didn't come for all the right reasons. I swallow nervously. "She uh, she checked in on me."

"Did she say anything about me?" Scott asks, diverting his eyes to stare at his feet.

"She knows, Scott." I say softly. "She knows what you are."

Scott leans back against the wall and runs his hands over his face and through his hair. "Are you sure?"

"I think the words 'my son is a werewolf' is pretty solid." I sigh, sitting up all the way. "She saw you and Isaac. She knew something was up. All it took was a little snoop through my room and research. She had all the pieces, she just had to put the puzzle together."

"She won't even talk to me." Scott says, and I can hear the pain in his voice. "What if she never accepts me?"

"She's your mother." Stiles says. "She'll come around."

I smile gratefully at Stiles, giving his hand a little squeeze. Scott looks up at the two of us and a small smile spreads over his face. "I'm happy for you guys."

"Thanks Scotty." I say softly.

The three of us fall into a comfortable silence, broken only by the sounds of our breathing. After a few minutes, I speak. "We won, Scott. The hunters are gone and the tomb vampires dead. It's over."

Scott doesn't respond. I wonder if he's thinking the same thing I am: is this really the end? Peter is back from the dead, Lydia is something, Allison tried to kill our friends, and Stefan and Damon are still in town. Not to mention the elusive Katherine Pierce, mentioned several times by Stefan and Peter. Is she really out there searching for Elena, her doppelganger? I wonder what's coming next, how many other battles we have to fight.
