Chapter Five

I stretched, followed by a thud on the floor only to realize the book there. It took all of my muscles to work just to lean and grab the book, but it slipped from my fingers and dropped back to the floor. I groaned and decided to ignore it.

"Lazy as always, Trinie," Kit said.

I put my head back on my pillow and sighed, my eyes yearning for more sleep.

"Well, you don't have to get up early for school five days in a week," I mumbled, removing the covers and standing up to my dresser, turning off my iPod in the process.

"I kind of want to. I'd like to see you actually working," she teased, giggling.

I glared at her playfully before going inside the bathroom with my school uniform.

"You know, you're already up, so why don't you pick up the book?"

Coming back in the room, I sighed before grabbing the book, placing it on the desk.

"There. Happy?"

She purred and smiled. "Very."

I rolled my eyes and picked up the velvet box, taking out the necklace. I checked myself on my mini-mirror. In the corner, I saw Kit swaying her tail. And next to her, blank space that I'm not used to.

I straightened my back. "I thought you said Kevin is coming back today."

Kit looked behind her and widened her eyes as if she just realized it.

"He probably got delayed or something," she replied, turning her head back to me.

I raised my eyebrow but shrugged anyway, even though this situation really is suspicious. Kevin doesn't leave the house unless its an emergency, I think. He never leaves my room or the house! Well, not that I've seen. I know that Kit knows and that she's hiding it, but something is stopping me from asking. I'm really worried.

Sighing, I grabbed my backpack and headed for the door. I turned around to face Kit.

"He better be back before I get back home. If not... Well..."

She smiled, but it wasn't a certain one. "Don't worry. He'll be back."

I managed to nod before closing the door, leaving Kit all alone.

For some reason, I felt something was off place. I couldn't help but tap my fingers on the desk while looking out the window. I felt somewhat edgy.

"Hey."

I turned my head and looked up to see Josh. I'm already in Science?

"Um, hey," I replied, my gaze going to the clock behind him. Almost time to go.

"Are you alright? You seem to be in a daze," he said, worry in his face.

I was taken aback by his concern. "Oh, yeah. I'm fine. Just thinking."

He briefly nodded as his friend called him over to the other side of the room. "Well, see you."

I nodded back. "Sure."

Gathering my stuff and heading out the door, I bumped into someone. I didn't fall this time though. I seriously have a habit on bumping into people. One day, I'm going to have to bring bubble wrap.

"Oh, crap. Sorry I-"

I shivered a bit from the voice. I bit my bottom lip, bracing myself for more of his teasing. I'm starting to get tired of it, but it hurts. His words remind me why I don't make friends in the first place.

"Stuffed animal girl! You again! You should really carry some cotton to soften the blow." He felt his smirk without even looking at him. I hugged my books to my chest tightly.

I closed my eyes tightly, refusing to get myself humiliated yet again.

"You need to mind your own business. And you need to stop calling me that. It's really old-schooled." I glared at him before turning the other way toward my locker, near to tears. He didn't use to be like that.

I shook my head and wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. If he wants to play hard ball, then I'll play along.

Shoving my books in my locker, I ended up gasping for breath out of shock when I saw Josh standing behind me.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you." He held up his hands, an apologetic smile attached to his lips.

"W-What are you doing here?" I asked, relaxing. But I was tense again, glancing around to see if he came with the Lington sisters.

He dropped his hands to his pockets and looked away, clearing his throat. "You're going on the bus again, right?"

My jaw dropped. Is he planning to make a daily agenda to walk with me to the bus?

"Um, yeah." I couldn't help but smile. The most popular guy is walking with me to the bus every day. Sure I had a crush on him before, but I didn't expect him to notice me like this.

Josh raised his head and smiled. "Let's go."

We walked side by side, taking our time to the bus, talking about our day.

Something still didn't make sense. Why is he hanging out with me all of a sudden? It's not that its bad being with him, but something just didn't feel... right.

Ignoring the thought, I focused on what Josh was saying. But for some apparent reason, I couldn't place what he was saying. His mouth was moving, but no words came out. I felt somewhat heavy. My eyes made its way toward my left, not knowing a reason why.

That's when I saw a boy with chocolate brown hair looking up at the sky, his gaze so distant that I couldn't help but stare. He seemed normal like everyone else, but it looked as if he was one with nature; as if he was at peace. The way he gazed at the sky held something else though. He seemed lonely.

I didn't notice that I was frozen in place until Josh said my name.

"Is something wrong?" he asked, shifting his body so he faced me, blocking the mystery boy from my view.

I shook my head quickly, continuing the walk with him.

Before hopping inside the bus, I glanced at the mysterious boy again. This time, he was looking at me with his black eyes, his gaze so familiar it gave me goosebumps. Who is he?

"Are you getting on?"

I turned my head toward the bus driver, his hand on the lever, irritated.

"Sorry," I said, climbing up the stairs. When I reached my seat, I hurriedly looked out the window, only to find the mystery boy already gone.
