Chapter 2

Suddenly all I could hear were gun shots and loud screams full of fear around the club. People were running frantically straight to the exit, pushing each other to get to the exit first. I looked to where the gun shots sounded and saw Christopher with a sleek gun pointing towards a petite redheaded woman wearing all black. Christopher was shouting at the woman, spit coming out of his mouth.

“Oh my god, Rose! Are you okay?” Shay asked, hugging me. Her face was full of concern and relief.

I nodded. “Are you?”

She nodded, swallowing.

Jay grabbed my hand pulling me away from Shay and running through the crowd of people, going to the opposite direction. “Come with me!”

I looked at the exit where everyone was going. “What are you doing?! The exit is that way!”

He shook his head. “Trust me.”

I don’t know what possessed me but I did trust him. There was something about him that made me feel safe and comforted. Even in the middle of a gang fight. Jay found a back door to the club and we were able to get out safely with Shay behind us. “Thank you.” I whispered.

He nodded and started walking back inside the club.

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion and I grabbed him by the arm. “What are you doing? Don’t go back there!”

He shook off my hand and walked inside. I was about to go back inside and stop him when Shay grabbed me by the arm with a bewildered look on her face. “Are you crazy? You can get hurt! We have to go!”

I sighed, realizing she was right and ran to her black Honda truck. Shay went to the driver’s seat and started driving quickly. We heard loud shots coming from the club and I looked back, sweating.

“D-Do you think he’s going to be okay?” Shay asked, her hands shaking.

I nodded, swallowing.  “I hope so. Why the hell would he go back there?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know.”

Three police cars were speeding by us heading towards the club.

I put up the volume of the radio to tune out all of the chaos. I looked outside the window thinking of Jay. I really hope he’s okay. When we got to my house, I said my goodbyes to Shay and went inside my house. I don’t live in the nicest neighborhood but it’s good enough for me.. My neighborhood was full of graffiti, pimps, and dealers but I know kids who live in by far worst places than me and I consider myself lucky to even have a place to stay.

I grabbed my keys from my jean’s front pocket and opened the door to my small house. I went inside and instantly heard the TV bursting with loud music. I walked towards the sound and noticed my dad sitting in our beige colored couch wearing boxers and a two sizes too small undershirt.

“Where’s Riley?” I asked him, confused.

He shrugged. “What do you mean?” He sipped his “El Presidente” beer staring blankly at the TV.

“Riley. Your daughter. You were supposed to pick her up from the daycare!” I said, angry.

I looked at the clock next to the TV and saw it was 10 pm.

My eyes widened. “You were supposed to pick her up 4 hours ago!”

He burped carelessly. “Oh.”
