Part 17

Quick recap: Mikael went back from the battle and was captured by the king’s personal guards. Meanwhile, Lunalea and Arnvid went into the hideous Adair Woods and confronted some demons. They won the fight, but then something wrong happened to Lunalea…

[Mikael POV]

When I came to, I found myself chained to the cold stone walls of the dungeon, clad only in my tunic and slacks, stripped off of my weapons. I noticed that my wounds had already been healed. A patch of black sky I saw from a small barred window telling me it’s night already. Outside the cell, Raphael stood watching me in silence—his bluish white robe was unmistakable. The moonlight that fell upon his face made his pale skin looked unnaturally white.

“What the meaning of this, Raphael?” I growled crossly. “Is this my reward for winning the battle?” I threw a sarcastic remark. Why didn’t I find it surprising that he was behind all this?

“Do not be angry, Mikael, this is only a means of prevention.” He said with a calmness that made me sick.

I frowned. “Prevention? What prevention?”

“Prevention from your ruining the plan. At any cost I have to prevent you from looking for Lunalea.”

Lunalea! Suddenly rage burned my whole body. “Where’s my wife? What did you do to her?!” I roared, the chains rattled as I tried to yank them off the wall (Unfortunately they made a good job when building this dungeon). “And what plan are you talking about??” I didn’t like what his sentences implied. He had a plan, which I didn’t know, which involved my wife! And he asked me not to be angry!

“I’ll tell you, but you need to calm down.” Said Raphael, still maintained his cool voice despite all the anger I hurled at him.

“You want me to calm down?!” I shouted, “You tell me where my wife is!!”

“Calm down and I will tell you everything!” the chief healer raised the tone of his voice.

I glared at him, trying hard to suppress my fury. “Fine!” I said through gritted teeth, “Tell me.” I lifted my chin up in an arrogant way, challenging him.

Raphael was not ignited. He took a deep breath before starting, “First of all, it’s not coincidence I found Lunalea that day about a year ago. Lord Uriel has foreseen it and told me about it. He said she was the key to end the war, but whether the victory would go to the humans or the demons was not yet foreordained.”

He paused and scrutinized my expression. But I remained passive, though the gears in my head working hard to process this new information and to connect it to what I had already known. I had heard that Lord Uriel was a clairvoyant and that his visions were always accurate, but he was an enigmatic man that I couldn’t easily believe. Who knew if he lied and actually had an agenda of his own?

Seeing me keep silent, Raphael continued, “When I did find Lunalea, I intended to elicit any information from her that would shed light to Lord Uriel’s prophecy—I didn’t calculate the possibility of her losing her memory. Then after I brought her to this castle and ran a test on her blood, I learned that Lunalea is..different.”

I raised my eyebrows, curious. “How?”

“She’s a half-demon.”

I laughed out loud. “That’s absurd! Of course she’s human!” I exclaimed. But deep inside I wasn’t sure myself..The guilty look on her face kept haunting me. ’Lunalea and her secret..secret she wouldn’t tell me..Is this it?’ I thought bitterly, ‘does she know all along that she’s a half-demon? Is she hiding this horrible truth from me all of this time?’ My heart hurted I felt gravely betrayed.
