Thirty-nine: A Peek Behind the Curtains.

After lunch, Y/n walked with Max to Ms. Kelly's office. The redhead never enjoyed her sessions with the woman, but they were only thirty minutes, and Y/n would always wait for her.

Max exited the office after the normal time, and Y/n took her girlfriend's hand and started walking.

Until Lucas stopped them.

"Max, hey."

Max turned for a moment, but kept walking. "What, are you stalking me or something?"

"No, I just wanted to give you this," Lucas told her. "Here, Y/n, I got you one too."

The boy held out two small slips of paper.

Max didn't stop walking, but she turned a little bit to grab the paper. Y/n grabbed one as well, and Max spoke. "What is this?"

"A ticket to the game."

Max rolled her eyes and glanced back at Lucas for a second.

"I know you never wanna come to any of my games, but this one's kind of a big deal."

"A big deal? Lucas, you really care about this?" Max chortled.

"Yeah, I- I- I do."

Y/n could hear the hurt in Lucas's voice. She felt kind of bad, she didn't know what she would have done if Max shut her out like she did with everyone else.

"Maybe you should find something you care about too."

Uh-oh. Y/n imagined that the 'oh' was dragged out, but she didn't say it out loud.

Max stopped dead in her tracks. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

Lucas stammered. "Uh... It's just- it's like you're never here anymore. Like you're... A ghost or something."

Max seemed kind of hurt. Her expression made Y/n's heart break a little bit.

"A ghost? Really?"

"Max. I know something's wrong."

"Yeah, right. Yeah, something must be wrong with because I started dating Y/n instead of you," Max said sarcastically.

Lucas's face showed that he instantly regretted his words. "No. No, that's... That's not what I meant."

"Lucas, look," Max started, wanting to end the conversation. "People just change, okay? That's it. I've changed. It's that simple."

Max started to open the bathroom door, but stopped. She turned back to Lucas, handed him the ticket, wished him luck, and then entered the girl's bathroom.

Y/n held up her ticket. "See you there," she gave a half smile before following Max into the bathroom.

When Y/n entered the bathroom, Max hugged her, immediately melting into the embrace. Y/n hugged back, staying silent. Max was at her lowest, and Y/n was her comfort person. The redhead would call Y/n when she had nightmares- which became quite frequently, and Y/n would sneak out of her window to spend the rest of the night with the girl.

When Max hugged her, Y/n didn't question it. She just did her best to comfort her girlfriend as they hugged, stroking the girl's hair.

Both of the girls's attention was caught when they heard a gag- somebody throwing up.
