Seven: Y/n Is Totally Tubular

!!!

Y/n found a spot on top of the bus, which they had barricaded with metal sheets and old rusty chairs and car parts.

It had gotten dark, and the trail they had left of meat chunks didn't seem to be working. Y/n was losing hope in their plan. That didn't stop her from lying on her back to admire the atmosphere, though. She still found peace in the night sky, which was littered with stars.

She heard Max's voice below her.

"So you've actually fought one of these before?" Max asked, referring to the Demogorgon.

"Oh, yeah." Steve said, realizing the redhead was talking to him.

"And you're like... a hundred percent sure it wasn't a bear?"

Then, Y/n heard Dustin's voice.

"Shit, don't be an idiot, okay? It wasn't a bear. Why're you even here if you don't believe us? Just go home."

Y/n furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, and also disapproval as to how Dustin of all people would say something as rude as that, especially to a girl he likes.

"Jeez. Someone's cranky. Past your bedtime?" Max snapped back. Y/n smirked at overhearing Max's response.

As Y/n was lost admiring the sky, she hadn't noticed that Max had climbed up the ladder, and was now across from her.

"It's pretty awesome."

The girl's voice startled Y/n a bit, but after realizing who it was, she immediately relaxed.

"The fog, I mean." Max clarified. "Reminds me of the ocean."

"You miss it?" Y/n asked. "The ocean, the waves, California? Hawkins seems pretty lame, I bet."

"No it's not, it's just-" Max started. "My dad's still there."

Y/n just nodded. On Halloween, Max had already told her about her parent's divorce.

"My mom and stepdad decided they wanted a fresh start, away from him. As if he was even the problem, which is just total bullshit. And my stepbrother, he's just angry, all the time, and he can't take it out on my mom, so..." Max ranted.

"He takes it out on you?" Y/n finished for the girl.

Max nodded, her voice started to break as she continued. "I don't even know why I'm telling you this. It's just, I guess I'm angry too, and- I know I can be an asshole like him sometimes, and I never want to be like him. Ever." Max quickly looked down to try to hide a tear as she wiped it away. "Jesus, what's wrong with me?" She scolded with a fake chuckle.

"Hey." Y/n put a hand on Max's shoulder. "You're nothing like your brother, okay? You're cool, and smart, and... really pretty."

Max smiled, the night hiding her blushing. "You're really pretty too, you know that?"

Y/n raised her eyebrows as a smile started to grow on her face. She watched the cool November wind flow through Max's fiery red hair.

"And smart and cool." The redhead added.

"Totally tubular." Y/n said, still grinning.

"Yeah. Yeah, sure. Totally tubular." Max agreed.

"I like talking with you, Mad Max."

"I like talking with you too, Stalker."

That's when they heard a roar.

"Y/n?! What's going on up there?!" Dustin called from inside the bus.

"Shit! Uh..." Y/n cursed as she fumbled for the binoculars.

She finally managed to see a figure through the fog; a small Demogorgon; Dart.

"Five o'clock!" Y/n shouted down to the others before looking to Max. "Come on."

Y/n went down the ladder as quick as possible, before reaching up for Max's hand. Max grabbed Y/n's hand and just jumped down the ladder, and Y/n half-caught her.

"Why's he not taking the bait?" Dustin wondered.

"Maybe he's not hungry?"

"Maybe he's sick of cow." Steve picked up his bat, - which had nails in it - and everyone turned to look at him.

Steve opened the bus door, and stepped outside, swinging his bat side to side.

"What's he doing?" Max asked, still holding on to Y/n's hand.

"Expanding the menu."

Steve whistled. "Hey, buddy. Come on, I know you're hungry. Human tastes a lot better than cat, I promise." He taunted.

"Wait... cat?" Y/n repeated. Dustin glanced at her, but everyone else was too preoccupied to realize Steve said 'Human tastes better than cat.'

Y/n heard another roar, and she peeked up out of the top of the bus again. She looked through the binoculars once again, and saw another Dart-sized Demogorgon. "Steve! Three o'clock!!!!" She screamed. Steve turned around and noticed the other creature before looking every direction to notice that there were more young Demogorgons surrounding him from every side. He started making a run back for the bus after Y/n shouted "Abort! Abort!", and he was dodging the creatures left and right. He rolled over a car hood, and the kids watched in terror. Max and Y/n squeezed each other's hands tighter.

Eventually, Steve made it back into the bus and grabbed a metal sheet. He slammed the metal sheet onto the door to use as a shield, and the monster stopped banging on the bus, everything going silent.

Steve glanced at Y/n and Max's joined hands, and then up at Max and Y/n, who quickly dropped each other's hands once they realized Steve noticed.

The quiet came to an end when they heard soft, slow patters on the roof of the bus Max stepped over to the ladder, and looked up to reveal another young Demogorgon, which roared in her face. Max screamed in horror at the sight, and Steve shouted for her to move back. Max had no hesitance to move away, into Y/n's arms. Y/n hugged her and rubbed her back to comfort her as Steve screamed at the creature, threatening it with his bat. "You want some of this?! Huh!?" The monster stopped mid-roar, and ran off. Silence filled the bus once more.

"Where'd they go?" Max asked, awkwardly moving away from Y/n.

"Maybe Steve scared them off?"

"I don't know if a bunch of interdimensional monsters would be afraid of a teenager with a bat." Y/n told them.

"Y/n's right, I don't buy it." Steve agreed.

"They were called somewhere." Y/n concluded.

They heard roaring again, but far in the distance.

"Come on." Dustin led the group out of the bus and started towards the sound, following the group of monsters.
