Chapter 1 - Stationary

I lay on my bed, wrapped up in three different blankets of varying thicknesses and textures; my favourite being the thick, heavy, grey blanket resembling a wolf pelt (it is so fluffy). I've been lying here for the past hour and a half trying to think of a way I can make a bit of extra money that I can spend on school supplies, I'm eleven next week so I'm going to high school after the summer and my stationary needs an upgrade. As it's something I want rather than require I don't feel right asking my dad for extra money.

My dad isn't very well paid for the job that he does, I'm not entirely sure what it is that he does even do as he doesn't like to talk about work, but I do know about the monthly business trips that he goes on. His boss seems to be the superstitious type with crazy rules; like all meetings must be held out of town on a full moon. (I don't understand either, trust me I'v researched it heavily).

After an hour and a half of concentrated silence I decide to turn my record player on with Back in Black the album playing obnoxiously loud. Half way through the title track I can here my dad's voice downstairs but can't quite make out what he's saying, so I leap out of bed to turn the music off.

"... ready," I catch.
"Sorry what?" I shout down.
"I said come down pup tea is ready" he tells me.

No more needed to be said, I was sat at the kitchen table not five seconds after he stopped speaking. It was Shepard's Pie (my favourite).

"So pup what do you want to do for your birthday next week?" He asked filling his mouth with mash potatoes.
"Nothing" I say blunt.
"Nothing? Really pup? It's your birthday," his eyes concerned.
"I want some new school supplies so I figured the money you would spend on a party or something you could give me for school things," I say, dad mentioning my birthday was what had inspired.
"Pup I can buy school supplies without sacrificing your birthday celebrations," I could hear the somber tone in his voice.
"I don't doubt you can dad, but it would be too much unnecessary spending, I'm only turning eleven it's not an important birthday and saving money is never bad, plus what would we do, who would I even invite, I'm not having one of those parties where I invite everyone because I have no one specific to invite, yes I want the money to go else where but surely you agree school supplies is better than a stupid party?"
"I'm not going to argue with you pup just eat your tea, we'll watch some tv then its off to bed, okay?"
"Okay."
