You are flawless
But I just can't wait for love to destroy us

Working wasn't as easy as Luke had expected. Even in a dumb coffee shop, things seemed to go wrong every day. Whether it'd be he trips up while serving and gets coffee all over a customers expensive shirt (the dry cleaning bill nearly killed Luke) or zoning out mid-pouring and ending up with coffee all over the counter, the mistakes seemed to never end.

Luke ended up with working the late shift. Because there was a university not too far away, students were constantly coming into the cafe extremely late to get a shot of caffeine and using the free wifi which was probably much faster than the one in their rooms or whatever.

So that's how Luke ended up working from 10pm until 1am, serving sleep-deprived teenagers and nearly falling asleep on the job himself most of the time. Because work was slow at that time he was the only one at the shop on his shifts, which works fine for Luke, no one around to annoy him.

It also meant he could just sit on his phone for most of his shift, listening to music through headphones, only occasionally having to do some actual work. He got paid all the same so it was fine for him.

The worst part was that Luke and Michael hardly saw each other anymore, Michael would be at work all day, and once he's back, Luke has to leave to get to his job. It kinda sucked, Michael was Luke's only friend really, and it felt unfair not to be able to see him much. But at the same time they could now afford the rent and proper food between each other, so that wasn't so bad.

It was getting to the end of Luke's shift, he had to clean off tables and counters, and just generally close up shop before he left, as he had the last shift of the day. So he started flicking off machines and wiping off the counter in front of him, and he was glad he didn't mind cleaning in these situations.

There was only one other person in the cafe. He was a regular in the shop, coming in on the dot at 11:30 and leaving just before Luke has to lock up. He was packing away his laptop and all that just then.

Neither of them had spoke to each other, except for ordering, though over the past week and a half he had come in and ordered the same thing, so Luke ended up making it just before hand, because it's easy enough for him and makes life a little better for the stressed out student.

Luke was broken out of his thoughts when the other guy left, the little bell above the door chiming loudly in the otherwise silent room, and Luke sighed, quickly wiping over the dirty tables and all that jazz, picking up the keys he had been given for the shop and locking everything away, before stepping outside, locking the door.

The walk home, though short, was kinda terrifying, given that it was the middle of New York and any amount of murderers or rapists or anything of the kind could be out. Luke shook the stupid thoughts out of his head though, pulling his jacket closer to his body and speed walking home. He couldn't help but jump at every noise that happened though.

The walk only took about five minutes (then again he was half running) and he crashed into the apartment complex, the walk always managing to give him chills, and not just because of the cold. His imagination just managed to run free at the worst of moments.

Luke clambered into the elevator, where he rested wearily against the wall of it. Despite work really not being that demanding, he still came home every day (night?) exhausted, most likely due to the fact that he made the effort to wake up early to eat breakfast with Michael still. But he felt drained as he wandered over to his apartment.

It was weird to think it was his, not just Michael's. He was helping to pay rent and buy food and everything, it gave him a sense of purpose in a way. It was pretty cool actually, maybe adulthood and responsibility wasn't so bad after all.

Luke unlocked the door, slipping off his boots in the door way and tucking them in the corner just by the door. It was usual routine now, come home, eat some toast usually, and then creep into bed, where Mikey would already be asleep.

Quietly, Luke did just that, creeping around the house as he got some food for himself. He wasn't completely sure if he was allowed to eat whilst working, but he decided to not do so, just in case it led to him getting fired somehow.

Luke yawned widely once finished, trudging sleepily over to the bedroom, where he slipped off his shirt and jeans, left only in boxers, but he put on a sweater to keep warm as well, and he crawled into bed, where Michael was already asleep.

Shuffling around until he was comfy, with his chest against Michael's back and arms around his waist, Luke fell asleep happy.
