Chapter Nine: Betrayal

"I think it's Luna."

"Huh? Paano mo naman nasabing si Luna?"

"Well, I saw the note in your living room yesterday. I received handwritten letters too. I received tons of text messages as well."

"Ohh, tapos?"

Umirap lang ito at nagpatuloy sa pageexplain. "Well, I've been doing some research about who they were from and it all lead to Luna. Bro I've got to be brutally honest with you, but ever since I met Luna, she had severe mood swings. But these past few days, her actions just seemed... Off."

"I still don't get it. Sa lahat ng tao bakit si Luna?"

Tanner then frowned into my face. "Luna just isn't herself these past few days. She also had frequent nightmares at night. Not just at night actually, when she sleeps for over an hour, she tends to wake up from her dreams. But I just can't explain her attitude these days."

I gulped as memories of our wedding day flashed back into my mind. She did claim that she wanted revenge. But why now? And why would she kill her own parents?

"I don't think it was planned. I think the person texting us is a different situation. It may be a hacker or something like that. I just don't think Luna can do such a thing. This is all just a fat coincidence."

"If you say so." He then rolls his eyes once more and sat back down.

After a few minutes of chatting, napag-isipan namin na puntahan ang mansyon na tinitirahan nila ni Luna para ipakita sakin ang ibang mga letters na nakolekta niya. I found out that Tanner is a very successful businessman. He owns a candy company and a mens' clothing line. Ipinamana sakanya ng tatay n'ya yung clothing line pero yung nanay parin ang may-ari ng isang kompanya ng mga furniture.

Marami ring small businesses si Tanner tulad ng pagbebenta ng mga hair accessories at ilang mga pet shop. Kaya sobrang yaman ni Tanner kasi siya nagaasikaso sa lahat ng hawak nyang kompanya. Grabe ang galing nya kasi kahit ang dami nyang ginagawa ay sapat parin ang oras niya para kay Luna.

Pagdating namin ay pumunta agad kami sa third-floor ng mansion at nagpasikot-sikot kami hanggang sa kwartong nasa dulo. Stock room daw ito ng mga mahahalagang mga bagay sa bahay kaya anim ang mga lock mula sa labas at lima daw sa loob. Wala rin daw na bintana yung kwarto kaya saktong pancg stockroom.

Naglabas ng susi si Tanner and then he unlocked the door. Inside looked like a completely normal stock room except for the fact that it was almost as big as a master bedroom.

We went inside and in the right corner of the room was a brown shoebox. He opened it and inside were tones of notes. I opened each of them and there were death notes that gave me chills. Grabe yung details na nakalagay dito.

"I really want to contact the police but..." he trailed off staring into the unknown.

"Pero ano, Tanner. Call the police on your own wife without evidence?"

Tumingala s'ya at saka sumimangot. "I don't want my family to get involved. My sister is pregnant and I also have two baby nephews. I don't want them to lose their lives at a young age. I don't care if one day I'll die, as long as my family is safe." Wika ni Tanner.

"Pero damay damay na ito. Di mo ba 'yon alam? Kita mo naman na kahit ako may tangka. 'Di natin alam, baka mamaya biktima lang din si Luna. Maybe she's already traumatized and afraid tell you."

"As if you care for her!" Tinaasan ako ng boses ni Tanner. "At least I didn't break up with her on our wedding day."

I clenched my fists but held my anger in. I know what I did was unexplainably stupid but he didn't have to rub it in my face again. I thought we were on good terms. Hindi talaga mapapagkatiwalaan si Tanner.

"When we got married, that was also the night she truly opened up about what she really felt. And guess what." He says with a hiss in his tone. "I just found out that she's still not over you."

That's when I realized how much I messed up. I destroyed her life for my own happiness. Because I was a coward. I ruined her life because I was a freaking coward!

"That can't be true! Mahal ka ni Luna."

"Tskk. Why does she keep saying your name in her sleep?"

I sighed and ran my hand through my face. "Look, I did those shitty things in the past and I want to apologize to you that I left you with these problems. But you did say she was having nightmares, right? Then could it be that..."

He sighs and nods. "Now that you mentioned it, you're right.

I exhaled and looked back at the box. Grabeng dami naman ng letters ito.

After finding a few letters to bring, I looked up and biglang nalaglag ang panga ko. May hawak na baril si Tanner at nakatutok ito saakin.

"I know you're behind all of this."

"Tanner, I have nothing to do with this. I would never kill anyone. Tanner, pag-usapan natin ito nang masinsinan. We'll talk it out. Don't do something stupid."

Patuloy parin na nakatutok ang baril sakin kaya I closed my eyes and prepared myself for him to pull the trigger.

I counted.

Inabot na ako ng tatlong minuto

But it never came.

Napamulat ako and the gun was gone but Tanner was on his knees sobbing. "I-I'm sorry, Jace. I was just tired of all this nonsense going on. I've been stressed out with Luna and myself. I think I'm going insane."

I sat beside him and started rubbing his back. Hindi ko pwedeng pagkatiwalaan si Tanner ngayong alam ko nang kayang niyang gumawa ng kalokohan. Kaya kailangan ko ring mag-ingat sa kilos ko.

After a while, bumaba na kami na dala ang mga importanteng kakailanganin namin then we went to my car. I turned the engine on and started driving to a local McDonalds para bumili ng pang lunch namin.

Umorder ako ng manok at spaghetti tapos bumili rin ako ng burger na may fries. Kinuha namin ang orders tapos nagmaneho na ako pauwi.
