For the first time ever as I listened to the classic song Sound of Silence performed by Disturbed, I really understood the meaning in light of today's era of the internet, instant celebrity and media banality. The sound of silence is simply the absence of anything meaningful being said. People talking without speaking, and hearing without listening. Much is said, little of depth is spoken. Many listen to the shallow din of the media hype and celebrities, but fail to hear the cries of the poor and oppressed. The neon god they make flashes a warning that is inferred from the banality it illuminates. That the truth is found scrawled by the true prophets on the walls of our derelict society.
