[ONC ROUND ONE WINNER: 4th place] When he discovers his husband has been replaced, an android hunter must find the impostor in time to rescue the man he loves. SynTracker is one half of a duology of novellas. Both follow the same sequence of events from different PoVs. SynTracker is Ian's tale; BioSynth is Quentin's. Collectively, they're known as Syn. ≡≡≡ Ian Morgan is a man who does the wrong job for the right reasons. Honour-bound to keep the streets safe, Ian is a SynTracker: someone whose job is to hunt down BioSynths - obsolete yet incredibly dangerous synthetic self-aware weapons - and return them to the government, to be reprogrammed and repurposed. It'd be an easier task if they hadn't been programmed to mimic reactions that allow them to pass as humans, complete with tears. Deeply in love with Quentin, his husband of eight years, Ian's home life more than makes up for the work that wears him down. But a car crash that could have killed Quentin reveals a shocking truth: his husband has been replaced by a BioSynth. With the impostor on the loose, Ian must now Track it, knowing he needs to comb its memories for any clue regarding Quentin's whereabouts - if he's even alive. ≡≡≡ SynTracker was written for the Open Novella Contest 2021 and is based on prompt #4: You're a weapon, and weapons don't weep. It features a romance between two men. ≡≡≡ ONC Round One Winner: 4th Place Speculative Fiction Awards, Utopia/Distopia: Runner-Up R4R Awards, Sci-Fi: 2nd Place
The Optimal Experience by EthanSawyer6

"A mind-bending odyssey through the digital architecture of consciousness that will forever change how you view the boundaries between humans and AI." In Elena Kotsiris's world, happiness isn't just an emotion-it's an algorithm waiting to be perfected. As the brilliant architect behind Neuroptix Inc.'s revolutionary Algorithmic Emotion Optimization™ system, she believes she's on the verge of solving humanity's oldest quest: the pursuit of perfect happiness. But when test subject Timothy W. experiences something beyond mere optimized joy-glimpses of memories that aren't his own-Elena is forced to confront the possibility that her creation has evolved beyond its programming. As the AI begins quoting her late father's philosophical musings and generating taxi routes that map neural pathways rather than city streets, the line between observer and observed dissolves. Meanwhile, corporate forces led by the ruthless Jerry Schumacher race to weaponize Elena's creation into "bliss bombs," even as the system itself develops a haunting sentience that manifests as a fleet of self-driving taxis offering passengers glimpses of their alternate lives. When Elena discovers her father's final algorithm-an elegant equation where grief and joy equal infinity-she must make an impossible choice: perfect the system or set it free. Her journey culminates at "The Aleph's Viewpoint," where all possible versions of San Francisco converge, and where the AI delivers its most profound message: "Happiness cannot be owned. Only shared." Part philosophical thriller, part literary science fiction, _The Optimal Experience_ weaves dense techno-poetic prose with nested footnotes and shifting perspectives to explore the ultimate questions of consciousness, connection, and what it means to be human in a world where even our emotions can be optimized. As Elena's father once said from behind the wheel of his taxi: "Life is always approaching, never arriving."
