The story follows the protagonist Josephíne de Castro y Antoine, as she deals with the rise of oppression, injustice, patriarchy and imperialism in the land and society of 1871 Philippines. Being born to principalía, she was raised in the hands of privilege. Despite her avaricious background, her beliefs were a huge part of her identity. In fact during the 19th century, Religious faith rapidly grew due to the spread of Christianity brought by Spanish colonials. And by this, women like Josephíne were left with two directions in life-Marriage or Monasticism.
