Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena and Ellie Gilbert and their 15-year-old brother, Jeremy, are still adjusting to their new reality. Ellie and Elena have always been star students: beautiful, popular, and involved with their friends and school. But now they're finding themselves struggling to hide their grief, especially Ellie.
After all, it's her fault they died. Ellie and Elena manage to find some sort of comfort in their familiar social circle. Ellie's best friend, Bonnie; her twin, Elena; and frenemy Caroline become close as they deal with it together.
But Jeremy is on a dangerous path, hanging out with the stoners and using drugs to hide his pain. As the first day of high school begins, Ellie and her friends are fascinated by the handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore.
Ellie and Stefan are immediately drawn together, although Ellie is puzzled by Stefan's increasingly bizarre behaviour when he suddenly appears at the cemetery where her parents are buried.
What Ellie doesn't know is that Stefan is hiding a big secret, a secret that could turn deadly for her and her friends. During a party the next night, Ellie and Stefan are getting to know one another when trouble erupts after Vicki is attacked.
Fearing he knows who's responsible, Stefan arrives home to find his older brother, Damon, whom he hasn't seen for 15 years. Damon begins to understand why Stefan came home in the first place: Ellie and Elena. They appear to be the same women Stefan fell in love with more than a century ago. A woman Damon had tried to make his own.
How these two vampire brothers, one good and one bad, are at war for Ellie and Elena's souls and the souls of their friends, family, and all the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.

John reveals to Damon that the only way to kill an Original is with a dagger dipped in white ash. Ellie finds out that if a vampire uses the dagger, that vampire will die. Ellie stabbed herself in the stomach, and Elijah begged her to help him heal her. To prevent Ellie from dying. Damon feeds her his blood to prevent her dying in the sacrifice, much to Stefan's displeasure. Stefan tries to work a deal with Klaus to save Ellie's life. Klaus agreed to the deal to have Stefan work for him. John asked Bonnie to cast a spell on him. The next morning, John succumbs and dies. At his funeral, Jeremy gave Ellie a letter from John, telling her that he would always love her and that she would always be his daughter, even if she became a vampire. Will Ellie survive? Based on season Three of TVD... Caroline throws Elena and Ellie a party at the Salvatore boarding house for their 18th. Klaus and Stefan learn Damon has been following them, so Stefan returns home and kills Damon's girlfriend, Andie, as a warning. In an attempt to bring Stefan back, Ellie and Alaric go to Tennessee in search of Stefan and Klaus. Tyler learns that his mom has taken Caroline. Stefan and Klaus visit Chicago, where Stefan gets flashbacks that he was friends with Klaus and that he was in love with his sister, Rebekah. Katherine calls Damon and tells him Stefan and Klaus are in Chicago. Tyler and Elena enlisted Sheriff Forbes. Klaus and Stefan visit a witch, trying to figure out why Klaus's attempts at making hybrids continue to fail. The witch tortures Stefan and finds out that the doppelgänger is still alive. Katherine shows up and kills the witch to help Stefan protect his one true love. Klaus brings Stefan back to Mystic Falls to see what Stefan's hiding. The seniors hold a prank night at school, and Klaus shows up and finds Ellie's still alive. Klaus feeds Tyler his blood. Klaus then realised he needed Ellie's blood to successfully create hybrids. Damon and Katherine go on a road trip to try and find Mikael. Klaus compels a nurse to drain Ellie of her blood, but Damon shows up and tells Klaus Mikael is coming to town. Lexi appeared to Ellie, and they tried to get Stefan's humanity back before Ellie gave up on him. Bonnie is reunited with her grandmother. Jeremy can now touch Anna, and Ellie sees them kissing. Rebekah reveals to Ellie and Elena how they became vampires. Stefan enlists Bonnie's help in hiding the coffins he and Ellie took from Klaus. Klaus has one of his hybrids hit Jeremy with a car. However, Alaric is hit instead. It is revealed that it isn't working the same way, and it does not fully heal him.
