Keith Kogane jest stosunkowo normalnym dzieciakiem, chodzi do liceum, które plasuje się na najwyższym miejscu w rejonie, a on sam na pierwszym miejscu w tejże szkole. Mimo to, nie przechwala się jednak, a wyniki uznaje za po prostu niepotrzebne. Zamiast tego woli skupić się na swoich hobby i marzeniach. Bycie drugim wokalem i gitarą prowadzącą w zespole jest jednym z takowych i radości z tego nie niszczy mu nawet fakt, że na razie grają tylko w opuszczonej fabryce. Niezależny, zawsze w swoim świecie, praktycznie odizolowany od reszty ludzi ze szkoły, z którymi nie chce mieć do czynienia, nie robi zbyt pozytywnego wrażenia. Poza szkołą to jednak zupełnie inna bajka. Keith nawet nie wie o istnieniu Lance'a. Zawsze tylko zbywa wszelkie gratulacje za swoje wyniki zbyciem ramion. No chyba, że pochodzą od Shiro czy chłopaków z zespołu. Lance McClain jest zupełnym przeciwieństwem Keitha. Jest pilny, sumienny, a przez dwa dni w tygodniu chodzi na korepetycje tylko po to, by prześcignąć swojego rywala. Tak, Lance jest numerem dwa. Zawsze z zawiścią i podziwem patrzy na nazwisko Kogane, tuż nad swoim. Gdyby tylko Lance potrafił zachować jakąkolwiek powagę może ktokolwiek uwierzyłby, że chłopak naprawdę się stara. On zamiast tego obraca wszystko w żart i zawsze robi wokół siebie zamieszanie i hałas. Lance nie ma zielonego pojęcia, jak wygląda Keith. Chłopak jest dla niego zagorzałym rywalem, ale zna tylko jego nazwisko. Nie powstrzymuje go to jednak przed wygrażaniem owemu "cudownemu dziecku", że kiedyś go pokona, co zwykle zostaje skomentowane śmiechem przez jego najbliższego przyjaciela Hunka i dziewczynę Allurę. Co się jednak stanie, gdy w pewne jesienne popołudnie, gdy Lance będzie pracował w Starbucksie, a do kawiarni zawita chłopak, od którego Lance nie będzie potrafił oderwać wzroku? It all came rushing back to him in a painful blur of dizziness; the kid not even a year under Keith-the one in his class at the Garrison. He had been taller than Keith by an inch or two at the time, but that was no longer the case. His face was younger now than it was then (if that was even possible). He was lankier then, too. Not as confident or comfortable in his own body. Keith's chest tightened. Old emotions resurfaced in a storm of bitter fury. It was like Keith hadn't spent years forgetting. The awkward boy who hit on every girl was now confident and out of the closet-his shields down. Keith felt a dull ache in his knuckles; a painful reminder of everything that happened the day he left.

Keith has never liked the holidays and never thought he ever would, but one snowy tragedy and he's trapped in town. With the annoying boy next door and his nagging older brother, will he finally find peace within enjoying the holidays? Or will he forever be stuck trying to escape the grips of joy and family that Christmas brings around every year?
