The next following week, Akasuki was excused from school her father putting every excuse he could think of on the table. Damien had attempted to come over a couple of times but each time, her father refused claiming she was deadly sick. Not that Damien ever believed it. It had worked until one day; she had no choice but to go in. She climbed out of the car glancing at her dad's worrisome face,
"I'll be okay."
"I'm going to wait for a bit," he insisted calmly, "just in case."
She nodded closing the door. She felt bad, he had taken time off work to spend more time with her. It was like he was scared to leave her alone. She reached the gates wandering inside. Wait. She stopped abruptly looking down at the ground. Posters upon poster were littered on the ground. What is this? She crouched down, twisting one of the papers in her hand. What the fuck. It was a photo of her kissing a boy from years ago. How? She picked up another, a random boy again. She scrambled through the papers, please, please don't be in here. She picked up two at once. Eyes wide as she stared at them. Sō. It was cropped to look as if she had chosen to kiss him. The other was real, Kenma and her locking lips outside the gym. She twisted the papers around to gaze at the back, her mouth widening.
"Kenma Kozume, who knew such a quiet boy could have such a wild imagination ;)." While on the back of So's sheet was " Sō Inuoka, another piece in the puzzle just used for Akasuki Au's free time while still being entangled with his fellow team member."
Who, no, that wasn't even a question. She crumpled the paper in her fists, standing up, aware of everyone's eyes on her. She didn't need to look for them, she knew where they were. She swerved through the students to the group sat at the bench giggling while pretending to make out with one another. Damien was grinning ear to ear watching the others with his arm draped around Rei. Fuck this, this is enough. It ends now. Akasuki held up the papers in her fists,
"you said this was between us and that you wouldn't drag them into this!"
Damien lifted his head briefly,
"oh, it’s you."
It's you? It’s you? That’s all he had to say? The fuse was burning brighter as Akasuki stepped forward holding the paper up,
"why did you do it?"
He hushed her glancing around with furrowed brows,
"you really want,"
"Fucking answer me!" Akasuki yelled throwing the paper at Damien.
She couldn't hold back, no, not anymore.
"You're drawing a crowd Akasuki," Damien grunted lifting himself to his feet standing before Akasuki look down on her.
“Aren’t you used to one?” she hissed back.
All she had to do was stand her ground. But she glanced around at the small crowd gathering. Her eyes locked with a pair of dimmed golden eyes watching her as beside them, Kuroo crouched down to move aside pictures that were covering the one of her and Kenma. His eyes lifted to meet Kenma's then slowly moved to look at Akasuki. Please, don't hate him, it's her fault. Fingers grasped her cheeks dragging her face towards theirs, Damien grinning at her as he hissed,
"you're so fucking pathetic."
Tears started to form in her eyes. He's not wrong. What possessed her to do any of this? He leaned in closer, his lips brushing up against hers, his warm breath layering her lips,
"you're too provocative for your own good," immediately he planted his lips upon hers.
What the fuck is this guy on? She didn’t move back throwing her palms straight out at his chest,
"I hate you,” her fists hit harder against his chest, tears slowly beginning to flow down her cheeks, "I hate that I did everything you wanted me to. I hate," her fists stopped, resting her palms against his shirt as she slowly looked up at him, his evil eyes faltering for a split second.
It could've been sadness, even possibly regret in his eyes but, she'll never know because this was the end for them. She wasn't sure if he felt the same way about her in the end. But it was felt like the right time to tell him that.
"I hate knowing that I loved someone like you, someone with such useless actions, loud words, aggressive eyes, someone who," she lowered her head stepping back, "never loved me back in the same way."
She felt his fingertips reach out brushing against her cheek, no. No. She wasn't going to allow herself to live in fear terrorised by his shadow anymore. She gritted her teeth as tears slid over her lips, fuck this guy. She took a step back growling as she swiped his hand away,
"don't, touch me," she lifted her head to look at him.
His eyes were semi closed focused on her, his lips parted like a failed attempt at words.
"Stop trying," she sniffled, this is possibly the longest he's stayed quiet to listen to her, she needs to make it stick, "stop, trying to make things better," she stepped back clearing her throat, "it's over, Damien,” she forced a smile, “till death do us part, I’m not waiting any longer.”
He furrowed his brows as if readying himself to argue. Fuck that, he can argue with himself, she's leaving. She hastily staggered into the crowd, escaping Damien's wrath. She's finally told him what was on her mind. Not everything but the basics, that was good enough for her.
"Suki," a voice erupted.
She glanced to her side to see Kenma struggling to squeeze past other students reaching out to her,
"wait,"
No, she couldn't deal with anymore confrontation, not today. Before Akasuki could even respond to him, her body had made its move first, continuing out of the crowd racing out of the gates. She took a moment to replenish her thoughts, wiping the remaining tears away, straightening up as she held her shaking hands before her. All she wanted to do was to go home. To go home and forget about everything. She stepped forward in preparation for her journey home yet her eyes dropped to the floor, papers littered before her. Why did it happen again? How did it happen again? Who knew what would happen if her father saw them? A shadow darkened her vision, shoes stepping upon the papers. Right now, she wished for a miracle, she begged for one. She lifted her eyes to meet her father's stern expression. Now, she was officially done for. Everything, everyone she had tried to defend during this stupid war, was going to unravel. What now? She told him everything, except stupid details like her supposed sleazy past to save his misery. She gritted her teeth as she clenched her fists down by her side, it was better to confront him rather deal with the miserable silence that was foreshadowed.
"Dad, I can explain," her lips quivered standing before him, fingertips brushing the end of her skirt.
He sluggishly crossed his arms, his hawk eyes staring into hers,
"I really hope you can."
And so, she did, in another rushed tearful rant,
"they're stupid photos, it was one of Damien's stupid jokes, but it's fine, it's over, dad, everything's," she slowed her speech as she noticed the major confusion in his expression, did, "dad?" she misread the situation?
He bit the inside of his cheek, tapping his fingers against his forearms before speaking in a calm and low manner,
"get in the car."
Hang on, what was he on about if it wasn't the photos? She crossed the road which felt like miles upon miles, feet dragging across the bumpy concrete, what was he on about? Did he see the photos? She could've sworn that's what he was on about. What part did she misunderstand? She pried open the barely warm handle ducking into the car, why did she rant like that? So stupid, so bloody stupid. Her father climbed into his seat, the silence washing over the pair as he tapped his fingers against the skin of the wheel. He's pissed, and she didn't blame him. What father would want a disgusting daughter like her, always involved with guys and violent manners,
"are you okay?" he asked, eyes meeting hers.
What? Is, is that what he wants to ask right now? Akasuki wasn't sure on how to respond so all she did was shrug, there wasn't really a right answer.
"You wanna get pizza?" He asked with a strong smile.
But what is with the unusual awkward tension in the car?
"Pizza?" She blurted in confusion, "dad, it's eight in the morning."
He nodded slowly,
"right," turning back to stare out of the front screen window, "that was silly of me."
Silly yet supportive, that was her father, it had always been him. She reached over to squeeze his hand on the wheel,
"let's get pancakes instead."
He met her eyes with a laugh, what's with him?
"you can have whatever, just," he cleared his throat, "tell me what happened, and please don't lie to me."
Right, it made sense now. Akasuki must have wounded his pride of being a father or betrayed his trust in some way. She nodded with a small smile, it was over, officially this time. He slid his hand from underneath hers to touch her face lightly brushing away the leftover tears. She held her breath as he pressed his palm softly against her cheek,
"I'm proud of you."
Proud of her? Akasuki loosely pressed against his palm, she didn't want to think about anything anymore, with the promise of pancakes, she'll get over it. She always did.
