The next morning...
Jay POV:
I woke up with a killer headache. I looked at the clock and groaned. I looked at my phone. A text from Hailey.
H: I'll meet you at the district. No time to stop home.
I just sat there. I went to the kitchen and found Brooke making coffee.
" so.." she said breaking the silence.
"So.." I said
"Jay, listen... I get it..." she said but I cut her off.
"Last night wasn't a mistake. But it wasn't supposed to happen like that. I mean..."
"Hailey." She said cutting me off.
"Yeah. Hailey."
"It's okay, Jay. I was here and she wasn't."
"It's not just that." I said
"I know. I'll see you at work." She said kissing my cheek and leaving.
A month later....
Natalie and Will are engaged. Jay and Hailey were still together.
Brooke POV:
I was late. Like that kinda late. I made an appointment before work.
"Well, Brooke. You are pregnant." Natalie said
"Oh god.." I groaned
She giggled "one night stand?"
"Yeah..."
"Anyone I know?" She asked
"Actually yeah."
"Who?" She asked getting more interested "that cute firefighter?" She asked
"Your brother in law." I said and she stopped
"Jay??"
"Yepp that's the one."
"When?!"
"A month ago."
"Oh my god. What does this mean for you guys or him and Hailey?"
"Nothing. Not yet. He doesn't even know."
" you're going to tell him right?"
" I have to, right?" I asked and she just gave me a hug. I went into work early and just sat at my desk.
"You're here early." Hank said and I didn't respond.
" is everything alright?" He asked concerned
" uh, no. Not by a long shot." I said
"What's going on?"
"I'm pregnant. Jay's the father." I said and he just looked at me.
"Whatever you two decide I'm sure it's going to work out." He said "and you always have me and this team." He continued.
Jay came in.
"Can I talk to you?" I asked and he nodded.
"What's going on?" He asked
" I know this isn't how we wanted this to happen. But it's happening and I don't know what to do. I just found out this morning and I wasn't even sure I should tell you.." I said rambling.
"Brooke, breathe." Jay said "tell me."
Jay POV:
"I'm pregnant." She said
I smiled at her.
" and I know you're probably mad and I am sorry but I do not want to miss a chance on being a mom..." she said
" Brooke." I cut her off " I'm not mad."
"No?"
" no. How could I be?"
" well I mean Hailey and everything."
I slowly realized what she meant. Hailey doesn't know we slept together when she was gone.
"Jay, I'm giving you an out here. You don't have to do anything. You don't have to be a part of it. No one has to know it's ours. But I am doing this. Now I have to go see my mom."
"See your mom?" I asked
" yeah. There's more than one reason I came back." She said and walked out. I had to go see my brother.
At the hospital...
I walked in and he started rambling.
" do you have any idea what real French champagne costs?" He asks
"More than you can afford." I said
"Don't I know it." He said and I smirked "so what's up?" He asked me.
"Brooke's pregnant." I said and he stopped
"Who's is it?" He asked
"Mine." I said
"What?! When?!"
"A month ago. After the whole Mouse thing."
"Does Hailey know? What's are you going to do?"
"No she doesn't. Brooke gave me an out."
"Are you going to take it?"
"I don't know. I mean we always wanted a kid. But the circumstances aren't ideal." I said and he nodded.
"I've got you no matter what. Go with your gut." Will said giving me a hug.
Brooke POV:
I met my mom who got out of prison while I was gone.
"Hello sweetheart." She said as I sat down.
"Hi mom."
"How are you?"
"I'm fine. Why did you want to meet?"
" I mean I haven't seen my daughter in years."
" yeah that's not an accident."
" can we forgive and forget?"
" which part? Because while I was away I found out my dad wasn't actually my dad. Matt and I are step siblings."
"Who told you that? Does Matt know?"
"Everything is about Matt and how it would make him feel isn't it?"
"Well, honey he would be devastated."
" so it's true." And she didn't say anything.
" unbelievable, mom." I said
" I didn't want to hurt you."
" you were never going to tell me." I said and once again she stayed silent.
"WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO ME?!" I yelled and threw the plate on the floor and left.
Jay POV:
I told Hailey. I told her everything.
" what am I supposed to say to this? If I say we're done then my heart gets broken but if I say don't break up then Brooke and the baby are alone." She said
"They're not alone. That's the thing. If I don't want them to be then they won't. I need to think it all over but I figured you have the right to know too."
"Right to know that you cheated on me.."
"Hailey.."
"No yeah I know. I was out of town, you were hurting and going down a dark place and Brooke was there for you. Yeah. I heard it before." She said and walked out. We had a case where multiple women were showing up to the hospital beaten and bruised in the same patterns. We had a suspect so we were going on a stakeout. Hailey and I were in the van and I was just thinking on what to do, what to say.
" are you really okay with all this?" She asked suddenly.
"I don't know if I'm okay with any of it. But I think the best way to protect everyone is to not talk about it." I said
"For how long?"
"Until we know what we're doing."
"You mean whether or not you choose to be in their lives." She said and I didn't say anything.
The next day...
Brooke and I were going to talk to the suspect who walked into a diner.
"Rob Lowenson?" Brooke asked and he looked at us as we sat down.
"Who are you?" He asked
"Chicago PD. You want to explain why girls who were last seen with you have ended up at the hospital with injuries?" I asked
"What are you saying." He said
"I'm saying you're abusing women. I'm saying watch your step because you don't treat people you love like that. I'm saying you'll end up in jail. I promise you that." I said and Brooke put a hand on my arm.
"I ought to lay you out right where you stand." The guy said
" I'd advise against trying that." I said and he walked away.
"Stay local." Brooke said and looked at me " you okay?" She asked
"Yeah, just fine. Come on." I said
"Jay, I can see the pressure I put on you. I just wanted you to know that I'm okay, we're okay." She said touching her stomach " whatever you decide it will be the right decision. You need to do what's best for you not for anyone else. You're my best friend, Jay. Always will be. So if you need me to bounce your thought off I'm right here." She said
"I just don't want to hurt anyone." I said getting in the car.
" Jay, everyone gets hurt. Even you. So will this kid. It's something we can't prevent. But you can only hope you make the decision that makes you happiest and that the people you hurt will forgive you." She said and I nodded. Our computer made a noise and she became silent.
"What's that?" I asked and she didn't say anything "Brooke..." I said and pulled over to look at the computer.
I pulled into the precinct and went to find Hailey.
" time stamped December 31st. New Year's Eve. What the hell happened?" I asked her showing the pictures that popped up "who could you not tell me this?"
"It's nothing, Jay." She said
"Nothing? Hailey, this isn't nothing. We don't keep secret from each other."
"We don't?" She asked
"Hailey..." I said
"The past comes to haunt, I guess." She said and walked away.
Brooke walked in.
"She say anything?" She asked
"No."
"Well, there's a guy that used to run with our suspect. He may know something." She said and handed me an address.
. . .
"You need to tell me something. What happened." I said
"Maybe you should talk to Hailey about this. She was undercover she can explain it more."
"She's not talking."
"Maybe for a good reason."
"She's my partner, so if you know something that's putting her in danger, then I need to know, now." I said and he told me everything. How this guy tried to attack her and would beat her and may have even killed her partner she was undercover with.
"Don't let her get too close this time." The guy said and walked away.

I met up with Hailey outside her apartment.
" I went to talk to a guy who used to run with our suspect. You know him Hailey. He told me everything. You need to back down." I said
"You don't get to tell me what to do with this one, Jay." She said
"Does Voight know?"
"No one does and they won't. You and Brooke need to not say a word. I'm keeping your secret you can keep mine."
" 20 different times, you have figured out a way to tell me don't get too close. I'm telling you, you're too close."
"I'm okay, Jay. Go home, okay?" She asked and walked away.
