"FINE! I DON'T EVEN WANT TO BE PART OF YOUR STUPID FAMILY! YOU ALL JUST FUCK EACH OTHER AND PRETEND YOU'RE BETTER THAN EVERYONE WHEN REALLY, YOU'RE ALL...ALL JUST...PILLOCKS!"

Smack!

Sirius fell on the floor with the force of the blow he had just received on his head from his father. He groaned in a mix of pain and anger. He got up quickly, staring at Orion Black furiously.

"What? Are you going to hit me back, boy?" His father asked.

"Maybe," Sirius said, his voice faltered but he tried to appear brave as he stood as tall as he could.

His father was still taller than him.

Sirius clenched his jaw, before raising his fist in an attempt to hit him. Orion was faster and grabbed the fist flying at him, threw Sirius' arm down before swinging a punch at his face. A loud CRACK echoed throughout the room. Sirius put his hand over his nose and let out a cry in pain.

Orion punched him once more, in the jaw, and he fell to the floor again. He felt sharp blows to his stomach from his father beginning to lose control as he kicked him mercilessly while he was still down on the floor.

"Stop! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, please stop," Sirius whimpered, cowering away from his father now.

"That's what I thought," Orion grunted, before leaving the room, "pathetic."

They heard the door to his office slam shut.

Regulus hurried over to Sirius, offering a hand to help him up but Sirius didn't take it. He stood up alone, and walked slowly back to the dining table without help. He hadn't even started his dinner.

And then his mother stood up from where she was sat at the dining table, and said lowly, "Sirius, just go to your room. I don't want to look at you right now."

"But-"

"Now."

"But I haven't eaten..."

She looked at him with a hard stare. After a moment he sighed in defeat and left the room, trudging tiredly up the stairs.

It pained him to walk. It pained him to move his face. It pained him to cry which, despite his efforts, was happening. Angry tears were the most common type for Sirius, but he hated that they happened.

He sat by his window for hours that night, his heart heavy with that awful feeling of hopelessness, that feeling that there really is nothing you can do. He looked up at the stars.

And then he had an idea.

He fumbled about on his desk, only guided by the soft moonlight coming in through the window. After a few moments, he found a spare piece of parchment, a quill and a half-empty pot of ink.

Prongs,
I'm sorry mate, I never wanted to do this, but I'm running away and I have no idea where else I would go. Can I stay round yours? It's only temporary, obviously, probably only for a couple of nights.
I hope you're alright. I'll see you soon.
Sirius

He whistled for Comet, his tiny, ink black owl that he had bought in first year, who flew and landed on his desk within a few minutes from wherever he was in the sky. Sirius handed him the letter and muttered that it was for James, because Comet had delivered enough letters to know where he lived without an address.

He watched Comet fly away, and hoped that the letter reached Godric's Hollow quickly. Luckily it wasn't too far away.

He winced painfully as he stood up, his ribs now really beginning to hurt. Catching his reflection in the mirror he saw how swollen and bruised his face was, and it made him feel nauseated. How could someone's own father do that to them?

He grabbed a bag and started stuffing things into it, some of his favourite clothes, his favourite books with his own notes in, only the stuff that he couldn't replace later on. He creeped down the stairs with his bag round his shoulder, praying that his parents were upstairs which, thankfully, they were.

In the kitchen there was a locked safe that could only be opened by a member of the Black family. He wasn't going to steal a lot of the money inside, just enough to get him on his feet once he had left. For Merlin's sake, he was only sixteen...he shouldn't have had to do any of this.

"Sirius, what are you doing?"

His heart plummeted to his stomach. It was Orion.

It was now or never.

He grabbed a fistful of the money and shoved it in his bag before making a break for the fireplace, his Dad soon running after him, throwing curses at him. Sirius held out his wand, but it was no use, his Dad was way more skilled than him because he was about three times his age.

"Get back here, boy!"

The body-bind curse hit Sirius and he became rigid, falling to the floor.

Shit.

Sirius knew the counter-curse, but couldn't do anything whilst paralysed. So he just had to wait.

"You were trying to steal from us, weren't you?" Orion asked, his voice shaking with rage, "you arrogant...spineless..."

He stamped on Sirius' already broken nose, causing tears to spring to his eyes and a muffled scream came from his throat.

"I'm getting your mother," he growled, "you're going to wish you weren't born after she deals with you."

As he left, Sirius began to get feeling back in his face, and his lips were able to move again. The spell wasn't very strong, apparently.

He took the opportunity to whisper, "reparifors," which broke the curse on the rest of his body. Once he was sure Orion was not near, he sprung to his feet.

His face bruised even more now, his nose streaming with blood, he rushed into the fireplace and grabbed a pinch of floo powder.

"Sirius Black! You get back here!"

His parents were running down the stairs and towards him once more just as he yelled, "The Potter Household, Godric's Hollow!"

And with an uproar of green flames, he left Grimmauld Place for potentially the last time. The last thing he saw was Orion Black's round face, red and contorted in anger.

He stumbled out of the fireplace onto the carpet of James' living room. He looked up to see James walking into the room, a piece of parchment in his hands.

So he had gotten the letter. Good owl, Comet.

"Sirius?" He whispered, looking at the broken boy, swaying where he stood, "oh shit."

He rushed over to him to support him and stop him from collapsing. Sirius felt the energy draining out of him, from the lack of food he had had in the day and having lost a lot of blood through his broken nose.

"James," he smiled painfully as the boy approached him, his eyes heavy now, suddenly feeling very drowsy, "sorry...it's been a long evening..."

His voice trailed off and his eyes shut as he passed out, collapsing on the floor.

He woke up in the Potter's spare bedroom, and although his mind was hazy and his head hurt, he could recognise the wallpaper.

"Hey."

He looked over to see James sitting on a chair beside the bed, his blue eyes studying him in concern.

"Hi, mate," Sirius said groggily, cracking a cheery smile.

"How are you feeling?" James asked.

"Mm, my head hurts," Sirius murmured, before shrugging, "but I'll live."

"Yeah," James nodded, "need help sitting up?"

"Cheers."

With James' support and a painful groan, Sirius sat up. James readjusted his pillows before Sirius leant back against them, sighing in relief.

"Mate, what happened?" James asked.

"Oh, the usual, my family are a bunch of wankers," Sirius murmured dismissively.

"Who hurt you? Was it your Dad?" James asked.

"Yeah," Sirius nodded slowly, "we got into a couple fights and he beat me up...I think he broke my nose, but it feels better now."

"Yeah Mum fixed it," James told him, "well, she fixed the rest of you up too, best she could anyway."

"Ah, your Mum's the best," Sirius said.

"Yeah...she was dead worried...we all were," James said, pursing his lips together in concern.

"It's okay, I'm alright now, mate," Sirius smiled softly for a moment, before laughing, "Merlin, you should be careful, you're making it look like you care about me or something!"

"Oh no, couldn't have people thinking that," James joked back, laughing.

"Oh Sirius!" Euphemia came bustling into the room, "Hello, dear, how are you feeling?"

"Much better, thank you, Mrs Potter," Sirius smiled gratefully at her.

"Oh, please, call me Mia, dear, how many times do I have to tell you?" She beamed kindly.

"Right -  sorry, Mia," he nodded.

"James, leave him alone, he needs his rest," Mia ordered her son.

"Alright," James nodded reluctantly and stood up, "I'll see you in a bit mate, yeah? Get some sleep now."

"Okay," Sirius nodded, grunting as he shifted down on the bed, "thank you both, for everything. I owe you massively."

"Nonsense, you don't owe us anything," Mia waved her hand in dismissal.

"You're my best mate, I'd do anything for you," James grinned at him, before going to the doorway with his mum, "night pads."

"Night love," Sirius shot him an identical grin.
