Fourteen

Remember when we were fourteen?
You were not the same boy I’d seen,
Who teased me and loves to make a scene,
You said, ‘You look so beautiful, Christine’,
I tried not to blush in front of you,
It was surreal and I can’t believe it to be true,
It was seven years since we first met,
And I’d rather it was a secret.
You said you love me, why so fast?
And they say it will not last,
I cried and cried, I was aghast,
When I said I love you too, you run so fast,
You took my heart with you, now it’s the past.
We were fifteen and suddenly strangers,
In the middle of the room, crumpled papers,
Not daring to look at me, you don’t see me,
What’s better than good-bye than a silent sigh?
Sixteen, I tried to forget about you,
Your smile I watched it from the corner,
Where you left me hanging, waiting for you,
Now I can’t be bothered.
Seventeen, Eighteen, feeling empty,
I was forgotten, not given a chance,
Will you think of me too?
The way I do.
Now, nineteen, never the better,
I tried writing you a letter but thought a poem’s better,
To let you know that fourteen’s too young,
To crush my hopes and dreams with just three words.

I wrote this for the guy who said that this will be something wonderful, then he decided otherwise and walked away.
