CHAPTER 13

Melissa sat in her chair staring at a photograph of her and Alex. Anger was built up in her body. It could have been her hormones, but she was still pissed either way.

Just as planned, the DNA results came in. The results were not to Melissa’s liking.

       Natasha is his.

       Nathanial is his.

Her face cringed at the thought of her future child being influenced by Nathanial…moreover being related to him as a brother.

Melissa was taking a risk of her job to expose Faith, let alone ignoring her bed rest, but was nothing but a failed thought. She still had a few tricks up her sleeve. Alex was going to stay hers regardless. In the mist of her inner rants, Melissa felt a fall of liquid roll down her legs.

________________

“Dammit!” Alex grunted as he threw his pen across his office. He wasn’t able to focus on work with Nathanial in the hospital. Alex was told he would be discharged at three this afternoon…The clock read eleven.

Aside from that, Faith was still on his mind. Not just casually, but in other ways…

       Dirty ways.

Alex had to face it. Melissa could never be Faith. Melissa was a little more high maintenance; Faith being the conservative one…even when she did have the fame. Melissa always knew what she wanted in life and got it. Faith made dreams and tried her best to achieve it. Melissa was having only one child…Faith had twins, nothing as a surprised in his family. Melissa could only have sex on certain days…Faith, on the other hand, was all in…

Alex stopped his thoughts right there. He stood up and began to walk out his office. Right in his front door was his secretary looking worried.

       “What’s wrong?”

       “Melissa’s in labor.”

_______________

Melissa’s screams could be heard down the hallway. Alex kept rushing to the room, barely having time to breath as he took each step.

“I’m here, bae. You’re doing well.” Alex held onto Melissa’s hand, feeling slight pain in his fingers with every squeeze of her hand.

“She’s crowing!” The doctor exclaimed as the nurses continued to help Melissa with her breathing.

Alex’s heart raced as he saw his daughter’s curly hair slide out further.

“Babe, one more push. Just one more,” Alex urged, not letting his off of his half born child.

Melissa took a deep breath and pushed hard until she felt the baby slide out and into the hands of the doctor. She was brought to tears as she heard their daughter start crying.

Alex gave Melissa kiss on her forehead and kept his hands entangled with hers. The doctor held the baby girl in front of the couple. “Congratulations,” he whispered as he walked out with her.

“What do you want to name to be, babe?”

Melissa took a quick breath and looked over at Alex. “Janet Marie.”

       “Wolfe?” Alex smiled.

Melissa smiled back. “Wolfe.” They kissed once more and stared into space as Melissa fell off to sleep. Alex walked out the room and stared into the nursery. He stared at baby Janet also asleep in the crib.

“Natasha…” Alex thought to himself. He wished he was able to be there for Natasha and Nathaniel’s birth…”

“Nathaniel…”Alex said out loud to no one in particular. He peeked in at Melissa once more who was still asleep and walked to the 4th floor to visit Nathanial.

As Alex neared close to Nathanial’s room, he checked the time for reference. 1: 47 P.M. He wrapped his hands down the door knob and slowly pushed inside the door frames.

Nathanial laid in the bed texting, but momentarily stopped and looked at Alex. “Shouldn’t you be at work or something?”

“Shouldn’t you stop flipping off teachers you hate?” Alex laughed.

       “I guess.”

Alex sat in the chair next to Nathanial and stared at him text.

Not looking up from the phone, Nathanial asked “You get the results?”

       “Of…?”

“To see if we really belong to you or not. I’m not stupid.”

       “I never took a DNA test…”

Nathanial looked at Alex with serious face. “What? But Ms. Parker said it was mandatory for the school system….”

“She what?!” Alex said trying not to raise his voice. He shook his head. He’ll address the matter later.

The room remained quiet as they sat. Nathanial put down his phone and looked at Alex. “Alex…What exactly happened?”

       “What?”

       “The day you left.”

“Oh…um…”Alex took a breath and looked down at his hands. “The day I left was the day I found…Faith had the affair…”

“Did you know about me and Natasha?”

Alex looked up at Nathanial. “I found out about you two after I confronted her. She didn’t know if it…you two…were mine or Adrian’s.”

Nathanial stared out the window down at the city. Alex looked down again, not sure what to say. “You know…Melissa had the baby. It’s a girl.”

“Oh joy. Another baby sister to deal with.”

“Why do you hate me?” Alex blurted without thinking.

“I don’t hate. I hate the life you and everyone else like you lives. I can’t speak for Natasha but I already knew about Mama’s life before us because I thought it was strange we received money from whatever source because of music. What pisses me off is that Mama left and basically exiled herself because of one mistake that probably wasn’t entirely her fault.. Did you ever think to come and see if we were yours or not?”

Alex remained quiet and let out a sigh as he responded. “No.”

“My point exactly. You didn’t care about us until you reunited with Mama again. The only way you really knew me before then was that trouble maker from Melissa’s rants at your house.”

“And how would you know she-”

“It’s Melissa. Whether you know it or not, she’s a bitch.” Alex was about to make a response but Nathanial continued. “She acts perfect at school or in any public eye but your fiancé is hateful when she doesn’t have her way.”

Alex partially found that true but sighed in response. “Nathanial, I-”

        “Do you still love Mama?”

Alex looked up at Nathanial. “Yes…But-”

“That’s enough, Nathanial,” Faith said coming into the room handing Nathanial a Styrofoam box. She avoided eye contact with Alex.

       “Faith, how long have-”

“You need to leave Alex. Now,” she simply said.

       “But he’s my son too…”

“You have to take care of Melissa.”

Alex looked at Faiths ignoring his eyes. He decided not to put up and argument and walked out. As he rode the elevator to Melissa’s floor, he wondered to himself if Faith had heard his last response to Nathanial’s question.
