It was late in the evening and you were getting ready to go to bed, you had already changed into your nightgown and brushed your hair out. You knew that your parents would probably be asleep by now, you had been reading and lost track of time so you were going to bed later than usual.
Just as you were about to get into your bed, you heard the sound of a guitar. You furrowed your brow in confused before realising that it was coming from outside. You grabbed your coat, slipping it on to cover yourself up, before opening the door that led out to your balcony. You stepped out onto the balcony, holding onto the railing as you looked for the source of the music.
You looked down and were slightly stunned to see Javier sitting on the low wall of a flowerbed as he played his guitar outside of your window. You watched him for a moment, a smile instantly appearing on his face when he saw you step out of your bedroom, before you realised that he was playing music outside of your house while your parents slept.
You smiled before bringing your index finger up to your lips in a shushing motion, hoping that he would be quiet. Luckily, he stopped strumming on the guitar and just smiled up at you instead. This time, you held on finger up as if to say 'just give me one minute' before disappearing back into your bedroom.
You hurried through the large house as quietly but quickly as possible while fastening your coat. You stepped outside and quietly closed the front door before running around through the gardens to where Javier had been sitting on the flowerbed.
When Javier saw you come around the corner, he placed his guitar down and stood up, facing you. Without hesitating for even a second, you ran up to him. You practically collided with his body as you wrapped your arms around his neck and Javier instantly wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you tightly against him.
"You're crazy, somebody could have heard you" you scolded him but all authority was washed away by the smile on your face.
"Don't worry, nobody heard me. Just you" Javier assured you with a cocky grin. You kept telling him that one day he was going to get caught but he wouldn't believe you, he always told you that things were going to turn out just fine. As long as you were together.
You and Javier were star crossed lovers. Two people from completely different worlds, one a daughter of a wealthy high society family and the other an outlaw and revolutionary. Two people this different were never meant to meet, their paths should have never crossed but they did. You had fallen in love with the outlaw and, in return, he had fallen in love with you.
-----
You and Javier had to make plans on when and where to meet, since he couldn't risk getting caught by your parents and he didn't like the idea of you travelling too far on your own. So you often met on the outskirts of your family's property. Tonight was one of the nights that you had planned to meet Javier so, as usual, you sneaked out when your parent's were asleep.
You walked over to the spot where you usually met Javier, a small smile forming on your face when you saw him. You felt better already.
Instead of greeting him with a smile, a warm embrace and a kiss like usual, you just walked up to him and wrapped your arms around his waist. "I'm so glad you're here" you mumbled as you buried your face in his chest.
"Y/N? What's wrong?" Javier asked, concerned, as he wrapped his arms around you. He would have to be deaf, dumb and blind to not notice that you were upset about something.
"I...I...I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do. I've tried but nobody will listen" you told him, apologising as you cried into his shirt.
"What's going on?" Javier asked softly as he started one of his hands over your hair, not caring about you staining his shirt with your tears.
"My parents have...arranged for me to be married" you told him, your voice cracking as you spoke.
"What? They can't do that" he said with wide eyes as he grabbed you by your shoulders and pushed you away from his chest. He still kept you close, only holding you far enough away so that he could see your tear stained face.
"They can if nobody stops them, and trust me I've tried" you sighed, feeling utterly defeated as you hung your head.
"Come on, I'm taking you away from this place for the night" Javier shook his head, wrapping his arm around you as he walked you over to his horse. He didn't know what to do or say, the thought of you marrying another man broke his heart and disgusted him, but he figured that you might want to get away from home for a little while.
You and Javier rode away from your family's property, you didn't know where you were going but you didn't care. Eventually the pair of you arrived at a beautiful little spot, an opening among some trees.
The two of you lay on your backs in the grass, staring up at the starts. It was a clear night so each star shone brightly, it was breathtaking.
"What's he like?" Javier asked, the first time either of you had spoken since you arrived here. There was a lot that you were both still processing, mainly the fact that you would be marrying another man.
"Who?" you asked but you knew who, you just didn't want to think about him.
"Your husband" Javier muttered, the words both tasting and sounding bitter coming from his lips.
"He isn't my husband..." you reminded Javier, you felt a little sick at the thought of that man being your husband, having to refer to him as your husband would never feel right.
"He will be. So, what's he like?" he asked, still looking up at the stars as if they would make this conversation easier.
"He's...he's fine I guess. He is the son of some friends of my parents, they'r wealthy and my parents want me to marry into another wealthy family. He's pretty attractive, blonde, a little shorter than you I think, maybe the same height. Uh, that's all I know really" you confessed with a small shrug.
"You're going to marry him and that all you know?" Javier asked with slightly widened eyes as he turned his head to look at you.
"I've only met him once...we spoke for about five minutes before he had to speak with my father" you explained, also turning your head to look at him.
"Sounds like a stand up guy" Javier scoffed, turning his gaze back to the stars.
"Yeah...too bad that isn't my type" you hummed, turning your attention back to the starts as well. Javier only smirked at your words, waiting to see what else you were going to say. "I prefer men with dark hair...I prefer brave revolutionaries, handsome outlaws, y'know that type of man" you told him, a smirk forming on your own face.
"Well, in that case, how about I help you forget about your fiance?" Javier asked as he suddenly appeared on top of you, making you gasp a little at the speed he changed positions.
"I would like that" you smiled as you wrapped your arms around his neck, running your fingers through his hair as he lowered himself down and pressed a kiss to you lips. You instantly kissed him back, forgetting everything about the man you were suppose to marry.
The only thing that mattered was Javier, the way that he was kissing you and touching you, the way that he made you feel, the way that you loved each other.
-----
You were at home, wishing that you could be anywhere else. Your fiance and his family were visiting but all you could think about was how you would rather be spending time with Javier.
You were all sitting in the lounge. You were sitting on a sofa between your parents and your fiance was sitting between his parents on the sofa opposite you. Something about this felt much more like a business meeting than wedding planning.
The door to the lounge opened and you glanced towards it, assuming it was a member of staff with the drinks, anything would be more interesting and less sickening than this. Your eyes widened and you couldn't help but tense a little when you saw Javier walk into the room with a silver tray in his hands.
Javier always dressed well, especially for an outlaw, but it was very strange to you to see him wearing the black and white attire that the staff wore. You tried to remain calm and casual as you bit back a smile, what was he doing here? You were both amused and horrified by his presence.
Javier placed the tray of drinks down on the table between the two families, making sure to make eye contact with you as he did so. The smirk on his face was so small that only you noticed it, but you also noticed that nobody seemed to be reacting to his presence. They probably just thought that he worked here, that he was new or something.
You watched Javier leave the room before snapping back into reality, realising you had completely ignored the conversation going on around you and you didn't know what was going on anymore.
Not caring about hearing what they were all saying, you politely excused yourself before standing up and walking out of the room. Trying not to look like you were in too much of a hurry. As you left the room, your mother and father sighed before apologising to the other family but you didn't care at you.
You closed the door to the lounge before staring to walk down the corridor. "Javier?" you whisper-yelled, trying to find him without attracting unwanted attention.
Instead of getting a reply or seeing your lover, you were pulled into a room with a hand covering your mouth. You only panicked for a second before you realised who it is that had attacked you.
As soon as the door to the room was closed, you turned around to look at Javier but you could only stare at him.
"You look wonderful, hermosa" Javier complimented with a grin, as if this was completely normal.
"Oh my God, you're insane" you told him, your eyes still wide with surprise.
"I wanted to see you" he explained, placing his hands on your hips as he gently drew circles with his thumbs.
"So you broke into my house?" you asked with a smile, you just couldn't be mad about this. You wanted nothing more than to be able to see him and here he was, you couldn't really complain. "Oh god, did you hurt somebody?" you asked, wondering where he had gotten the staff uniform, your eyes going wide again but this time with panic.
"No, it's okay, I haven't hurt anyone" Javier assured you, laughing softly at your reaction.
"Then, where did you get the uniform from?" you asked, glancing down at the uniform he was wearing.
"I stole it, but I didn't have to hurt anyone" he told you, putting your worries to rest.
"Okay, good. I have no idea how you got in here" you confessed, laughing to yourself. There was no way he could have just walked in through the front door without somebody seeing him, but after seeing him appear in the lounge without alerting anyone made you think differently.
"Did you know that your parents don't know the names of any members of staff...earlier your father called me Pablo" Javier told you with a straight face but you knew that he wanted to laugh about it.
"Oh...oh, Javier, I'm so sorry" you laughed softly as you apologised for your father's ignorance, Javier never said anything, he just laughed along.
"You looked like you were having fun in there" Javier said sarcastically once the laughing stopped.
"Ugh, Javier, it's so boring. He is so boring" you groaned, making Javier laugh. "Can't you just take me away from it all? I can't spend the rest of my life with someone like that" you sighed as you rested your forehead against his chest.
"You know that I would happily take you away from it all" Javier spoke softly as he cupped your jaw in his hand, making you lift your head to meet his gaze as he caressed your cheek with his thumb.
"I love you, you know that, right?" you asked, raising a hand to gently brushing your fingers through his hair. Javier had his hair tied back neatly but a few strands had escaped, so you smoothed them back and tucked them behind his ear.
Javier tried to ignore the feeling of your engagement ring brushing against his face. Whenever you were together, you would take it off but he hadn't really given you the time to do that this time. He knew that you only wore the ring to please your parents but it still make him feel a little sick. He had voiced this to you once and you couldn't help but agree, the ring never felt right on your finger, it felt like something that just didn't belong to you.
"Of course I do" Javier smiled slightly before leaning down and kissing you sweetly. "I love you too" he whispered against your lips, resting his forehead against yours.
"I've got to get back there..." you whispered, trying to pretend that it was only you and Javier in this house, that you didn't have to leave him to go back to your family and your fiance.
"I know" he sighed, wrapping his arms around your waist. Neither of you planned on moving, even if you had too.
"I'd much prefer to stay here" you told him, as if he didn't already know it.
"I know" he smiled softly. Javier knew that you loved him and not your fiance but it still hurt that you were marrying someone else, it was nice to hear that you prefer spending time with him rather than anyone else.
"Now, get back to work" you teased, looking up at him with a smirk as you started playing with the lapel of his uniform.
"Oh, careful there, miss L/N" Javier smirked back, his voice low and threatening but you weren't scared at all. You were far from scared.
"I expect to see you later, Mr Escuella. Please don't keep me waiting" you said, your breath fanning his lips before you turned and walked out of the door. Javier smiled to himself and shook his head as you left the room.
You managed to sit through the rest of the meeting between the two families, all while mostly thinking about Javier and what he was doing. As the other family was leaving, you were tasked with showing them to the door.
You couldn't stop the smile that appeared on your face when you saw Javier walking the opposite way down the corridor, still acting like he was a member of staff here.
"Jódete" Javier smiled politely at your fiance but you knew that what he said was far from polite, you actually had to stifle a laugh. Your fiance squinted at him, not understanding what he said, which was probably for the best.
-----
You quietly left your house, sneaking out to meet Javier where you normally plan to meet each other. You smiled as soon as you saw Javier waiting for you, leaning against a tree.
"Ready, mi amor?" Javier asked, pushing himself away from the tree when he saw you and walking towards you with his arms opened slightly.
"What have you got planned?" you asked, suspicious of the smirk on his face.
"I'm going to show you what you are going to miss about being a free woman" he told you as he took your hands in his.
"I will always be a free woman" you assured him as you let him guide you towards his horse.
"Will you? When you are married, when you are raising that man's children?" Javier asked, raising an eyebrow at you. You knew that he was right, you could keep seeing Javier even after you were married but the truth was that you would have to start a life with your husband. You could keep seeing each other, not really.
"...show me what I'll miss" you paused for second, letting his words sink in before speaking with a smile.
Javier smiled back before lifting you onto his horse and then mounting it himself. You wrapped your arms around his waist as you both rode off. You had no idea where Javier was taking you or what he was planning but you knew that it was going to be something you had never done before, something just felt different about tonight.
You didn't know what to say when Javier started to ride towards a camp. Music was coming from the camp, probably from a gramophone, and people moved around the lantern lit area, all talking and drinking. They seemed to be celebrating something.
Javier dismounted the horse before helping you down, taking your hand in his and giving it a reassuring squeeze before walking you into his gang's camp. He grabbed two drinks, offering you one and you accepted it with a smile.
As you walked further into the camp, a few people greeted you warmly, some even greeted you by name. Apparently Javier had mentioned you to his friends, that definitely made you smile.
That night, you had a wonderful time. You drank, danced, laughed, and even got to speak with some other members of the gang. It was nothing like the parties you were used to attending, it was much better.
Once the night had started to calm down, everyone either going to bed or sitting in small groups to talk quietly between themselves, you found yourself sitting at the campfire with Javier. You were sitting on his lap with his arms wrapped around you, the whole thing being something that you could definitely get used too.
"Javier?" you asked softly as you ran your fingers through his hair. When you first met Javier you, admittedly, thought that his hair would be dirtier but after you touched it for the first time you realised how soft it was. You loved his hair...you loved him.
"Yes, cariño?" Javier asked with a slight hum as he looked at you with a gentle smile.
"Would you really take me away from it all...take me with you?" you asked, wondering if he truly meant what he said or if he was only trying to make you feel better.
"I suppose the real question is: would you leave it all behind for me? I just...I would never ask you to do that, it's too much to ask" he sighed, comfortingly running his hand up and down your waist. Of course he would like it if you ran away with him, it would make him happier than anything but he could never ask you to leave your family and your life behind for him.
"Javier, I want to leave it all behind. I don't want that life, I want to be happy, I want you" you smiled a little, curling a strand of his hair around your finger before letting it go.
"I want you too but you have to be sure. It's a huge change in lifestyle, the people you will be associating with are completely different...they aren't all good" Javier warned you, not wanting you to make a choice that you would regret but you knew that the only thing you would regret was not being with him.
"I know, but you'll be there. That's all I need" you reminded him, making him smile. You lent into him and pressed your lips to his, Javier instantly responded to the tender kiss.
"Who would've thought that a humble outlaw, such as myself, would make such a wonderful so happy" Javier teased, making you laugh softly to yourself as you relaxed in his embrace, watching the flames of the campfire dance.
"I dunno. Two people from different worlds, falling in love and fighting to be together against those trying to keep them apart...sounds pretty Shakespearean to me" you hum before kissing his cheek, making Javier smile as he watched the flames with you.
It was always meant to be you two together, it was just unfortunate that you came from such different worlds.
-----
You had packed a bag of things you would need, knowing that you couldn't take all of your belongings with you. You had said your goodbyes in the most subtle way you could and told your parents that you loved them, without hinting that you would probably never see them again. If you ever did see them again, it wouldn't be for a long time.
You had also written a note, that you left on your bed for your parents to find in the morning when they came looking for you. You decided that you wanted them to know everything but you knew that a note would be the only way to tell them and still be able to run away with Javier. You wanted them to know that you would be alright, that you would be with the man you loved, even if he was the exact opposite to the type of man they wanted you to marry.
You slipped off your engagement ring and placed it on top of the note, you were happy to be leaving that thing behind. You sighed as you turned to the wedding dress that was hanging up in your room. You had just had it altered this morning to fit you correctly, now you were leaving it to do back into the box.
"It is a beautiful dress" a familiar voice came from behind you, making you gasp in shock as you turned around to see Javier standing in your bedroom.
"How did you get in here?" you asked with wide eyes, keeping your voice low even though your parents probably couldn't hear you from their bedroom.
"I climbed up to the balcony outside your room" he told you as it was obvious, gesturing back to your open balcony door.
"...of course you did, I shouldn't even be surprised" you shook your head, you really should learn to stop questioning how he managed to do things. Javier just chuckled at your words, knowing that you didn't mind his unexpected appearance.
"It is beautiful though, did you choose it?" Javier asked, turning both of your attentions back to the dress.
"No, it's my mothers. She wanted me to wear it on my wedding day, so did I, honestly. I just pictured my wedding day to be with somebody I actually loved" you told him with a small sigh. As a child, you imagined getting married in that dress but now you dreaded it.
"You should bring it with you" Javier spoke suddenly yet softly.
"What? Steal my mother's wedding dress, why?" you asked, your brow furrowing in confusion as your gaze snapped to him.
"It's not really stealing, it is yours now. I just thought that if you brought it with you...you could still get married wearing it" he shrugged, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.
"...are you asking me to marry you?" you asked after managing to find the words. Your eyes were wide and your mouth was slightly agape, was he really asking you to marry him?
"You don't have to answer now. When I ask you, it will be far more romantic than this. But I do plan on spending the rest of my life with you" Javier confessed, dropping his hand to his side as he turned his body to face you.
"It doesn't have to be more romantic, this is perfect" you assured him as a smile grew on your face.
With swift movements, you cupped Javier's face in your hands and pressed your lips to his. Javier wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you tight against him as he kissed you back. If you didn't know it already, in that moment the pair of you realised that you would do anything for each other.
You packed up the wedding dress before letting Javier take you bags, the pair of you sending each other a smile before sneaking out of the house for the last time.
Javier loaded your bags onto his horse before helping you up and finally mounting the horse himself. You wrapped your arms around his waist, pressing a kiss to his shoulder before you both rode off into the night.
My bounty is as boundless as the sea. My love as deep; the more I give to thee the more I have, for both are infinite.
