Luke

As Luke sat in the car with a very sad looking Michael, he realized Matt was probably right. He usually was but Luke had a thing for keeping his hopes high for when it came to Michael.

They drove towards the cinema and while the older man was trying to keep the conversation going it was clear something was wrong. Luke went through his last texts with Matt so he could convince himself that his friend was right.

Matt
You know there's no one who's a bigger fan of muke than me... But are you sure Michael invited you out on a date or just a friend hangout?

Luke knew Matt was probably right and he felt stupid for dressing up and even putting on a perfume which he could feel where it was sticking on his skin.

Still, even if this wasn't a date, date, Luke felt happy because he was around Michael. Especially after a week of not seeing him. He also felt good because the man gave him a Christmas present. It was from Michael and his dad but Luke knew Michael was the one who picked it up.

He once asked Luke why he kept wearing the same shoes and Luke's answer was because they were the best. What he didn't say was that wearing anything else made him feel physically sick and he couldn't explain why. His last pair wasn't the newest but he couldn't afford to spend money on new shoes so he almost teared up when he opened the gift bag.

Michael didn't let him pay for either the tickets or the snacks which made him feel like shit.

What made Luke feel worse was the fact that he didn't know how and couldn't ask Michael what was wrong. He was afraid it was maybe something he did. Or maybe there was something wrong with his dad and Luke didn't handle bad news well in general.

But as they were just fifteen minutes into the movie Luke couldn't take it anymore. Michael was staring at his shoes and didn't laugh at any of the jokes which even Luke found funny. And Luke didn't find a lot of things funny.

He took Michael's hand and even though the older man didn't understand what was going on, he let himself be pulled out of the theatre.

"What was that about?" Michael asked. He seemed worried. "Was there anyone in the room you know?"

Of course, he'd presume it was about Luke. How could Luke not be in love with someone like Michael?

"I-I didn't think you enjoyed the movie." Luke managed to say. "Not sure you want to be here with me either."

The two found their way outside and Michael kept walking so Luke followed him.

"What? No, no, Luke. I'm so sorry." Michael sighed and stopped. "I'm sorry. It's not your fault, it's mine."

"Can I help?" Luke was nervous because now it was confirmed something was indeed wrong.

He had never seen Michael like this, so when the man looked at him it made his heart hurt.

"I was a bit selfish when I asked you to hang out with me over the Holidays. Calum went out of town for two days and I knew I wouldn't stand to be alone."

"That's okay." Luke nodded. "We said we'll try and be friends. Friends are there for one another."

Michael nodded and started walking again. Luke followed.

"Is this it?" Luke asked. "Or is there a reason you don't want to be alone?"

They walked for a few minutes before the red-haired man answered. "Did you ever have someone in your life you wish you'd never have to see again?"

Without hesitation, Luke nodded. He was sure everybody had at least one person on that list.

"Well, the one person I never wanted to see again decided they want the opposite."

Michael's mum was the first person who came to Luke's mind but that wouldn't make any sense.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

The way Michael looked at Luke said more than any words could. "I probably should. But if I do it won't only hurt me but it'll hurt you too."

It took a second before he understood. Because all of the people on Luke's list who he didn't want to see again were his ex-boyfriends and lovers. And Michael was considerate enough to not talk about his love life around Luke, who was in love with him.

"We don't have to talk." Luke agreed. "But we can go back and have dinner somewhere. When I'm upset food always makes me feel better."

"Yeah." Michael smiled and then started laughing. "Let's do that."

Luke

Luke had many plans for the New Year's Eve but none of them included him getting this drunk.

Before Matt's party, he was invited to Michael's house where his dad was hosting a dinner for his friends and co-workers. Michael and Luke had one too many drinks but Luke was okay with that.

Drunk Michael was a happy Michael and the older man only took a drink if Luke did too. So, they were both pretty drunk before they even got to the party.

The moment they came to the party, Luke noticed it was nothing like the first time he came to Matt's party. While on the previous one the selection of people was small, this time you could barely stand in the house.

There were around a hundred people there at least and it took a tipsy Luke a while before he found his friend. As he was searching for him not one but a few of his not straight friends said hello to him and Luke knew it will be a fun night.

When he finally noticed the dark-skinned man, he loudly shouted his name. The man noticed immediately that wasn't something Luke would do. When he came closer Matt wasn't happy with the state Luke was in at all.

"Luke." He hugged him anyway and Luke didn't even flinch, that's how drunk he was. "Our plan won't work if you're this drunk."

"I'm fine." Luke giggled. "I've seen a couple of boys who would be perfect to make Michael jealous with."

The two had a loose plan with only a few rules. First one, Luke wasn't allowed to kiss Michael, but if Michael would kiss him first, he could kiss back. Second, Luke had to try and make Michael jealous.

Easy.

Even if Luke was drunk.

He decided on having a couple more drinks before he'd try and find the man for the job as Michael was nowhere to be seen so Luke couldn't drag him on the dancefloor and hope for him to kiss him first.

But after an hour or so after not seeing him anywhere even plan B couldn't happen.

Luke couldn't make Michael jealous if he wouldn't see him with someone else.

He found the second-best person. Calum.

"Calum?" Luke asked. The man was just standing in the corner of the room like he was surveilling the party. "Where's Mikey?"

Calum frowned. "He told me he was going to find you."

"Oh, okay."

It didn't seem to be okay with the Maori man. "That was twenty minutes ago."

A second later Calum started walking around the room like a crazy person, asking everyone if they've seen his best friend.

Luke was confused but decided on helping him. He walked up the stairs and started opening doors. Michael was at least as drunk as him so he maybe took a nap.

His heart almost stopped when he opened the door to Matt's room.

Michael was there, he could recognize the red hair anywhere. But he wasn't alone.

In fact, he was pressed against the wall by a man taller than him and if they weren't kissing already, they were about to.

"Michael?" Luke asked, a bit sad and a bit confused. Mostly drunk.

"Get out." The other man shouted but when he turned back, Luke noticed Michael's face. Michael looked scared.

"Calum!" Luke called because he panicked. He was confused, he didn't understand what was going on.

It didn't take long before Calum was there and the last thing he remembered was Michael's best friend pulling the guy away from Michael and punching him in the face.

Any thoughts my loves?

Luke's thoughts? Him noticing Michael was upset?

Michael having someone he wanted to never meet again?

The part? Luke and Michael getting drunk?

The last part??

- I made sure this chapter was more focused on the monologue than dialogue because it seemed more Luke-like -
