Ice's hands felt cold and clammy as she pulled her luggage at the arrival area. Ilang beses niyang pinasadahan ng kanyang mga mata ang lugar pero hindi niya makita si Elina. Sigurado naman siyang hindi siya nag kulang sa pag papaalala dito kung anong oras siya darating at kung saang terminal siya hihintayin.
Truth is, Ice was never comfortable around Elina. All the memories she had with her cousin wasn't something she'd like to think about often. They used to live in the same neighborhood hanggang sa lumipat ang pamilya nito sa Los Angeles, Ice's parents soon followed. Mas malapit ang ang edad nito kay Lex kaya mas close ang dalawa noong una bago pa man siya dumating.
She used to hang out at their house all the time kasama si Lex at ang mga kaibigan nito. Ice remembers watching them while they play the "big kids" games, iyong mga larong hindi siya pwedeng sumali. Si Elina minsan ang hindi nag papasali sa kanya kasi hindi pa daw niya naiintindihan ang laro, Ice might not have understood the rules of the games but she perfectly understood that they don't want her around.
Lex still dragged her with them though, kaya most of the time nanunuod nalang siya sa kanila. Minsan hindi na rin lang siya sumasama just to avoid Elina's nags and bratty attitude. The last straw for Ice was when Elina threw a tantrum because she wanted her doll noong birthday celebration ng lolo nila. To shut her up, their family decided to give Elina the doll para tumigil na ito sa pag iyak and promised to buy Ice a new one. Binilhan naman siya ng bago pero hindi niya makakalimutan ang naramdaman niya when her parents and Elina's parents huddled over her, convincing her to give Elina the doll. Like the good kid she is, binigay nalang niya kahit ayaw niya. It was hard to look at her cousin holding her doll for the rest of the day. The only thought that lingered in her head was "Sa akin 'yon eh".
Elina continued to bring the doll to their play dates. Hindi alam ni Ice if it was to taunt her or ano pero sa lahat ng nangyari walang nakuhang reaksyon si Elina sa kanya. Ice never retaliated nor she a tear after everything. Noong umalis ang pamilya nila Elina para siyang nabunutan ng tinik sa dibdib.
She only heard bits of stories about her cousin since then. Naririnig nalang niya ang pangalan nito kapag may family gathering sila. Hindi rin kasi close ito sa iba nilang pinsan pero alam niyang may contact pa ito kay Lex all this time kaya siguro mabilis din lang itong pumayag na doon sila mag stay.
Nag hintay si Ice ng halos kalahating oras bago niya makita si Elina. Nag message ito na male-late ito sa pag sundo sa kanya because of an emergency sa trabaho. Wala naman siyang magagawa kaya nag hintay nalang siya sa isang restaurant. Hindi naman ito ang unang beses niyang pumuntang California but it is her first time to travel alone this far. The jitters died down nung basa byahe palang siya and now her back is killing her. Gusto na niyang matulog ng diretso because all she got during the flight were short naps. Dapat makapag pahinga siya ng maayos bago dumating si Lex, for sure mag gagala sila pag dating nito.
Hindi rin siya naka pagpahinga ng maayos bago umalis ng Pilipinas. She made sure everything was alright before she left. Inayos niya ang plans nila para sa event pag dating na pasukan para sa center and she helped out in any way she can to make up for her absences and under times. Her issue gradually died down too kaya nakapag open na ulit siya ng accounts niya without her notifications blowing up. Mayroon pa ding matapang na nag me-message, hindi nalang niya pinapansin. Naka usap na din niya ang mga college friends niya, though she didn't have the chance to talk to Harmony directly. Nag decide nalang sila to catch up once the break is over. Sinabi na din niya na mag papakita na siya sa kanila.
Nag Grab nalang siya papuntang airport instead of going with Lex's choice na mag pahatid nalang kay Stellar. Tinanggihan din niya ang offer ni Cast and Uno dahil alanganin ang flight niya sarili nilang family matters. Cast will be going out of the country too, nauna lang siyang umalis dito while the Romeros will be going to their ancestral house in Cebu. Iniwan niya dito si Skippy dahil mas mababantayan ito ng maayos. She dropped her son off at their house two days before her flight, hindi din siya pinatakas agad ni Four nang makita siya nito so she stayed there for the whole afternoon. Naka alis din siya when the little boy took his afternoon nap.
Hindi niya nakita si Dos ni isang beses man lang the whole time she was there. Sabi ni Uno pumunta daw ito sa bahay nila Alek. She was hoping to catch up with him pag umuwi ito but she couldn't wait naman hanggang gabi kaya umuwi nalang siya nang hindi man lang ito nakita. All she got was an "Ingat!" text from him the morning before her flight. Not to compare but it was dry compared to Cast's long good bye call na para bang mawawala siya ng ilang taon and Uno's super long text na puro paalala sa kanya to take care of herself and enjoy her vacation.
Ice managed to get food in her system nang makita niyang palapit si Elina. Isang malapad na ngiti ang salubong nito sa kanya. She was taken aback a little because Elina always greeted her with a fake smile. Did she master that over the years?
Ice can't be blamed kung hindi pa din nagbabago ang tingin niya kay Elina. All she can remember about her are the bad things. She remembers every bitter memory that comes along with the face of her cousin.
But... wait. Did they always resemble each other that much?
Ice tilted her head. Parang naka tingin siya sa sarili niya sa malayo. Up close Elina is like a taller, fairer version of her with short hair.
Natural lang na mag kahawig sila noong bata pa but now they could pass as siblings with the way they resemble each other.
"Hi! Sorry you had to wait long." Nakipag beso agad ito.
Ice doesn't know what to feel for a moment. Hindi niya alam kung anong pinag usapan ni Lex at Elina and what Elina thinks of her now. Did her cousin pity her? Na awa kaya ito sa kanila kaya ito pumayag?
"It's fine." Binigyan nalang niya si Elina ng tipid na ngiti hoping her haggard face will deliver the idea na sobrang pagod siya and she's not up for long conversations.
Pumunta agad sila kung saan naka park ang sasakyan nito and Elina rambled on how her coworker pisses her off kahit wala namang tinanong si Ice kung ano ang nangyari. Ice had to smile at that because Elina is as snarky as ever. Ang hindi niya lang inexpect ang mabilis na pag open up sa kanya ni Elina ng ganon.
Maybe Elina isn't the type to dwell on the past unlike Ice kaya madali itong nakikisama sa kanya ng ganon. Maybe it was too early to tell. Halos isang buong araw silang magkasama, ano kaya ang mangyayari?
Hindi nagawang umidlip ni Ice during the ride to Santa Monica. Nag sight seeing nalang tuloy siya habang nakikinig pa din sa mga sinasabi ni Elina. Dumadagdag din naman siya sa mga kwento nito at sumasagot sa tanong kahit papaano. She was surprisingly easy to talk to if you look pass all the snarky remarks she makes about other people. Siguro wala lang talaga itong mapag sabihan.
Kwento ni Elina, she went to college somewhere in Santa Monica instead of staying in Los Angeles at her parents' home. Hindi naman daw ganon kalayo but she was glad to branch out early. Ice remembered Lex nang marinig niya iyon. Parehas ang dalawa na ayaw nang may magulang na palaging naka mata sa kanila. While Ice on the other wanted to be guided by her parents lalo na sa edad niya ngayon pero wala naman siyang magawa of her parents have other priorities. Inisip niya tuloy, what if sumama siya dito sa California? Will things turn out the way she wants it to? Maybe it will, but she guessed she won't be entirely satisfied. Her parents are workaholics, in the end mag-isa pa din siya. Tsaka hindi niya din makikilala ang mga kaibigan niya ngayon.
She gazed out the window when the car stopped at a stoplight, hiding her smile. The friends she left back home were like the fire that keeps her heart burning. The silver lining in all of her dark clouds.
But then, instead of feeling content, her chest hollow again.
A voice kept repeating inside her head.
No.
No. They're going away too, soon... you can't keep them. Everything you want to keep will be taken away from you. You can't be too happy.
A thought she buried deep within started clawing its way out again. Whenever she tries to think of something positive, the negative isn't far back. The negative thoughts just wraps around her mind and tells her that it's meant to happen one way or another. Even when you show them countless of reasons to stay people will always, always leave. It's the truth of her life. The truth that's poured like poison in all of her cracks.
They're the temporary hapiness she risked her peaceful life to have. God knows how much she wants to keep them but if they are the ones who decide to leave, she can't do anything about it.
She avoids thinking about it but with the situation she left back home hindi malayong mangyari ang iniisip niya. One is slowly breaking the bridge they built. The others will soon follow...
Her thoughts are so contradictory that it's messing her up inside.
"So does Lex have a girlfriend?"
The negative train of thoughts snapped back and hid itself at the back of Ice's head nang marinig niya ang tanong ni Elina. Binalik niya ang tingin dito.
"Not that I know of..." Masyadong busy si Lex ngayon to even have a girlfriend. Dati meron pero nag break din agad because of his priorities. Lex said it was hard to find someone who understands all his quirks.
"What about a boyfriend?" Elina smirked.
"Hindi ko din alam." Ice adverted her gaze once again. Not that it bothered her or anything, Lex can love who he wants just as long as he's happy, she just doesn't like people assuming or jumping into conclusions about someone's sexuality. She's gonna let it pass. Tinanggap nalang niya na may ugali talagang hindi mag babago sa pinsan niya.
As soon as Elina showed Ice where she's staying parang nag activate agad ang jet lag niya. Binaba niya agad ang gamit niya sa kwarto and talked to Elina for a short time para sabihing tutumba na siya ang she'll probably wake up pag gabi na. Her cousin didn't mind at iniwan na din siya agad.
Ice plans to get a hefty amount of sleep bago man lang dumating si Lex but her dreamless sleep was cut off nang maramdaman niya ang pag vibrate ng phone niya in the middle of the night. Nagising siya ng bandang 8:30 ng gabi to check her phone.
Ice squinted her eyes because of the light. She blinked a few times before reading the messages
Una niyang nakita ng DM ni Cast sa Twitter. He sent a picture of Jollibee's best selling food with no context. Picture lang talaga.
Kumunot pa ang noo niya bago niya maalala ang pinag usapan nila bago siya umalis. They were talking about the food na hindi nila makakain habang wala sila sa pilipinas. Her flight was a day ahead of his, hindi niya alam kung nasaang lupalop ito ng mundo ngayon. Kung nasaan man ito, nakuha pa nitong mang asar. What does she expect from Castiel Elizeo, really?
As a counter attack nag hanap agad siya ng pictures ng mga chinese food na binanggit nito sa usapan nilang iyon. She added different versions of sweet and sour pork too, sinigurado niyang una iyong sa Chowking because it's Cast's favorite dish. As Castiel eloquently said it, "I'm a slut for chinese food."
Hindi niya inaasahan na mag rereply ito agad because he's probably on his way to god knows where kaya lumipat na siya sa ibang messages na natanggap. May mga natanggap siya galing sa college blockmates niya, meron din galing kay Ma'am Claude na picture ng mga bata, which reminds of their school activity na kailangan na niyang pag tuonan ng pansin once she gets back. Huli niyang nabasa ang message ni Uno.
It wasn't a message but a picture. A picture of Dos with Skippy on his lap as he packs his luggage for their trip.
Kung tama ang pagkakabilang niya ng oras, he sent the message at 11 am PST. It must've been taken the day before dahil ngayon din ang flight ng mga ito pa Cebu. They're going to take all the dogs with them, even Skippy.
Mag rereply na sana siya when another picture came in. It's still Dos with Skippy. The puppy was resting on Dos' arm while they watch tv, still taken the night before. Mukhang hindi alam ni Dos na kinukuhanan siya ni Uno.
Ice couldn't help by smile sadly.
Does Uno know? Kaya ba ito nag se-send ng picture? He's not the type to send these kind of messages. Gawain iyon ni Castiel, eh. Is there a reason behind this?
She thought about it for a moment. What if nang t-trip lang talaga ito ng kapatid? Should she take this as an opportunity to talk to him again?
Instead of replying to Uno directly sinave niya ang mga picture at sinend ito kay Dos. With an added message of "Your brother is exposing you."
Hindi naman siya nag e-expect ng reply agad. Paano pag mag reply nga ito? Magkakamustahan sila? Are they going to pretend that there isn't an invisible rift between then? Baka naman siya lang ang nakakaramdam non. She wants to know if Dos feels it too. Is he doing this intentionally?
Ice sighed. She's overthinking this again.
Binaba nalang niya ang phone niya to avoid thinking about it further. She panned her eyes over the room. Hindi naman ito ganon kalaki, mas malaki pa nga ang kwarto niya sa bahay nila, and the corners were stacked with old boxes. Mukha namang nag linis ang pinsan niya para pag handaan ang pag dating niya. Siguro kaya naka kalat ang ibang gamit dahil wala na itong ibang mapaglagyan. She decided to get up dahil naka ramdam na din siya ng gutom. Maikli lang din ang tulog niya kaya sana mabilis siyang antukin mamaya.
Ice found Elina lighting a scented candle in the living room. Hindi pa siya agad napansin nito. She decided to wait a while before making her presence known when she saw how Elina closed her eyes and looked kind of... solemn.
Ice cleared her throat nang bumukas na ang mata ni Elina kaya tinignan agad siya nito. "Oh you're up. Wanna order dinner?"
They ended up ordering food at a nearby Chinese restaurant kasi nag crave siya bigla sa Chinese food dahil sa mga pinag se-send niyang picture kay Cast. Elina surprisingly has a lot of take-out menus to choose from. Hindi na siguro ito nagluluto since mag-isa rin lang naman ito sa bahay. Naisip niya tuloy na kahit pala sa living situation nila ay similar.
Elina mentioned that she had to move out when she started college pero nag drop out din ito kalaunan and got herself a job instead. Hindi na niya kinwestyon kung bakit and why did her aunt and uncle agree with their daughter to stop school. Kung sumama siguro siya sa magulang niya nag-aaral din siguro siya din ngayon stuck in an apartment or a dorm. That kind of living situation made her feel more alone for some reason.
"So may itinerary na ba kayo ni Lex?" Elina asked nang kumakain na sila.
"I'll leave that to him," Ice chuckled. "I think he wants to visit galleries as much as he can habang andito siya. I just want to revisit the places na napuntahan ko na din noon. Do you have any suggestions?"
"I think Lex knows his way around kaya ang Kuya mo na ang bahala siya just plan your day carefully." Ang tanging advice na binigay ni Elina.
Right. Some galleries are in Los Angeles where their parents are at. Mas maikli na ang distansya nila ngayon pero hindi niya pa din pwedeng makita ang parents niya. Tinusok-tusok nalang niya ang parte ng karne sa plato gamit ang tinidor, bigla siya nawalan ng gana.
Akala ni Ice makakapagpahinga siya ulit pagkatapos nilang kumain pero nag aya ang pinsan niya na pumuntang beach. Wala din naman siyang gagawing importante kaya pumayag na siya. Mabilis lang siyang nag palit ng damit at nag dala sa hoodie because the night is chilly lalo na't beach pa ang pupuntahan nila.
It was short drive to the nearest beach na madalas puntahan ni Elina whenever she wants to be alone.
Kung dito din siguro siya naka tira, ganito din ang gagawin niya whenever she wants some alone time. She'd hang out at the back of her car by an empty parking lot overlooking the whole beach while she listens to waves dangerously crashing to the shore.
Nilagay niya ang dalawang kamay niya sa loob ng bulsa ng hoodie. It's been a while since she hung out to appreciate nature like this. Kahit na sobrang dilim, the sound of the waves calmed her for some reason.
"Do you mind if I ask what happened?" Biglang tanong ni Elina when the waves drowned their silence. Alam na niya agad kung tungkol saan ang tanong nito.
Umiling si Ice bago bumuntong-hininga. "They said it's not practical to travel just for a short holiday. Lex argued with them about it but they still won so we thought we'd compromise."
"And what about you? Anong sinabi mo kina Tita?"
Ice's forehead creased. She took everything in kasi kapag natalo na si Lex talo na din siya. She was never the one to argue with her parents over anything kahit na unfair na sa kanya.
"You let Lex say everything for you again huh?"
Inangat niya ang tingin kay Elina. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"I mean Lex has always been your voice. Hanggang ngayon pa din pala. You know I was shocked when I found out that he left you for Paris. I thought he'll keep you by his side forever."
"Alam niyang kaya ko ang sarili ko." Ice bit back, hoping the dark will keep her cousin from seeing her grim expression right now.
"Hmm" Elina only mused, para bang hindi ito naniniwala. "Hindi ka man lang ba nasaktan nung sinabi niyang aalis siya?" Nilingon siya nito at tinaasan ng kilay.
"No..." Ice drawled her lie, remembering the exact moment she knew na may planong umalis si Lex. "Alam ko naman na para sa pangarap niya yon so -"
"Oh stop it with that brother complex of yours!" Elina laughed bitterly, sounding a little annoyed now. "Wag mong sabihin sa akin na walang point sa buhay mo na nagalit ka kay Lex? Life isn't all rainbows and butterflies, Isa. Lex has flaws too."
She knows about his flaws. He has a lot, no matter how perfect and highly she thinks of him, he has a lot. She has long accepted that kasi ang Kuya niya lang ang kakampi niya sa lahat ng bagay.
That's how it is right? When you love someone, you love all of them even their flawed parts. Sometimes those little imperfections makes you appreciate the person more. It's their own uniqueness. The little imperfections are part of the reason why you loved them in the first place.
She reminisced all the times when she felt something other than admiration for her big brother, even the ones she tried to bury to avoid hurting.
She remembered something. A memory from when she was 8, the time when they got their first dog. She loved their dog dearly and when it died from a virus, na hindi niya pa naiintindihan noon, she couldn't help but cry and question why it left her. Pinatahan siya ni Lex by telling her that their dog had to leave to a better place and it's safe now. Hindi niya lang sinabi kay Lex pero inisip niya noon, bakit kailangan nitong umalis? Hindi ba nila naaalagaan ito ng maayos? Bakit hinayaan ito ni Lex na umalis?
She was mad at Lex for a while but eventually accepted his reasons. What made her remember is that because it wasn't just light sadness. It was the kind that made her wonder and question herself for days. It was the kind that won't go away even if she buries it deep in her mind.
It was one of those extreme heartbreaks.
"Hindi ka ba nagalit sa kanya nung hindi ka man lang niya pinagtanggol when I took that thing away from you?"
"Why would I be mad a him over something that's entirely your fault?" Ice snarked back. Elina seems to be putting salt over her wounds and re-opening old ones.
It's not a situation where Ice can run from easily. Every word her cousin throws at her hits the deep scars.
"Oooh she knows how to talk back now. This is the version of Isa I'd like to talk to." Elina smirked, crossing her arms over her chest, calling her by her old nickname.
Ice bit the inside of her lip. Hindi niya lang inexpect na babanggitin iyon ni Elina kaya hindi na niya napigilan ang sagot niya. It was a sensitive memory for her. She needs to calm herself before the thread of control snaps entirely.
"Why do you love riling me up?" Ice let out a deep breath.
"It's like people are not worth your time at all. You won't give even the littlest reaction and if you do, you get over it fast. Para bang hangin lang na dumaan kasi mabilis kang maka intindi. And you accept it as it is. Hindi ka man lang marunong lumaban. That's what I hate about you."
Ice has always been guarded. She catches whatever live throws at her and make do with what she's got. If she ends up losing, she swiftly moves on. She forgets everything. Forget it. Bury it. Don't cry over it. It was meant to happen. That was always her mantra.
It's how she deals with the world to avoid hurting more. It's how she stops her armor from cracking. "You don't know me -"
"Palagi kitang tinatanong kina Tita kaya alam ko ang nagyayari sa'yo so it's safe to say that you're still the same old Isa na madaling agawan ng kahit ano kasi hindi nagagalit."
Hindi siya naka sagot agad. Elina was right about something. Mabilis siyang maka intindi and it's easier for her to accept it instead of hurting over it or turn it around.
"Why are you bringing Lex into this?" Mahina niyang tanong, bringing back their previous topic. Hindi pa din niya maintindihan kung bakit gustong-gusto ni Elina na magalit siya sa Kuya niya.
"Lex hated you at first you know." Elina stated.
Her heart stopped at that. She can never imagine her brother hating her. Mag away man sila, Lex could never hate her and the other way around.
"Kami halos ang palagi magkalaro noong baby ka pa. Hindi ka niya masyadong binibigyan ng pansin noon dahil din sa parents niyo. Hindi ko alam kung ano yung tamang tao na mag kwento nito sayo but -"
"Nasimulan mo na kaya ituloy mo." Ice gritted out. Hindi pa niya naririnig ang kwentong ito. The earliest memories she had with Lex were the happy ones. Iyon na talaga ang mga pinili niyang maalala.
"You were a miracle baby in some way kasi Tito and Tita's marriage was failing. They were fighting so much that Lex spends everyday at our house instead of yours. Hindi maintindihan noong una ang sitwasyon. Kung bakit nga ba ayaw niya sa inyo, I just kept playing with him kasi parang Kuya ko na din siya eh. Then Tita found out she was pregnant with you and that kind of saved their marriage kasi they decided to stay together. Akala ko magiging masaya si Lex kasi magkakaroon na siya ng kapatid but I didn't see any trace of happiness in his eyes that time. Tumagal siyang ganon hanggang sa lumaki ka na rin. Then he started playing out less and less and won't come over to our house until he stopped coming all together. Kung lalabas man siya, kasama ka na. Doon na nagsimula yung hindi ka niya maiwan kahit ilang minuto man lang sa ibang tao. Kahit na sa parents niyo. He sheltered you too much and I didn't like it." Elina ran a hand through her hair, malayo ang tingin nito. "You were so fragile in my eyes that I couldn't help but rattle you everyday. I guess I did that because you made Lex unhappy when you came. Kasi sa isip ko noon siya ang Kuya ko."
Inisip niya na noon na baka nagseselos lang sa kanya si Elina kaya nito ginagawa ang mga ganong bagay sa kanya. Elina didn't say it directly pero parang ganon na din ang sinabi nito. Tormenting her was a revenge in some way because she made her own brother unhappy with her mere presence. That made her question everything. Should she trust Elina's words? Ganon ba talaga ang naramdaman ni Lex when he found out he's going to have a sibling? That happened a long time ago baka naman niloloko na naman siya ng pinsan niya. Is this a level up way of tormenting her? Because if it is then it hits the right spots. Elina is willing to go back to open old wounds just to spite her, just to get an extreme reaction from her.
Pero... alam naman niya that her parents had a rough marriage. May sinabi din naman itong totoo. Siguro hanggang ngayon hindi pa din naayos with the way they're treating their so called "family". She had a happy childhood because of Lex not because of her parents. Yes they were present pero hindi sa mga importanteng part ng buhay niya. When she was in elementary who came to her first school performance? Si Lex. Sino ang kumukuha ng card niya every grading? Si Lex. Sino ang sumasama sa kanya every field trip? Si Lex. Parang accessory lang nilang dalawa ang yaya nila noon.
Na realize niya din noon, kaya hindi niya na miss ng sobra ang parents nila ng umalis ang mga ito because from the start, hindi na ganon kalaki ang presence nila sa buhay niya.
At some point na question na din niya if they really do care about her. If they do, they sure have a weird way of showing it.
"I couldn't help but think about what happened to you nung nalaman kong umalis si Lex. With the way I observed, you seem to be doing okay but not entirely. You keep yourself together enough to get through the day."
Ice opened her mouth to oppose but closed it again because of how she accurately put it. In the short amount of time they spent with each other napansin na agad nito. Her control is slowly slipping.
Her train of thought was cut off when her phone went off. Hindi niya sana titignan nang sikuhin siya ni Elina.
"Tignan mo na baka importante yan."
She sighed before fishing her phone out of the pocker of her hoodie. Muntik na niyang mabitawan ito nang makita niya kung sino ang nag text.

It was just a simple "H". Hindi niya alam kung typo ba or ano but she wanted to smile for some reason.

Nauna lang yung H. Nagmamadali kasi hehe
"Wow. I haven't seen that smile in a while."
Ice flinched nang marinig niya ang boses ni Elina. Her expression turned back to its natural neutral one so fast. Hindi niya napansin na naka ngiti siya. Good thing it's dark, Elina can't see how her cheeks are flaming right now.
Elina gave her a knowing smile before shifting her gaze back to the sea.
Ice looked down on her phone. Gusto niya ngumiti ulit. She forgot where she was at the moment dahil lang sa isang simpleng text. Every negative thought and feeling that resurfaced zoomed right back in. Hope bloomed from her chest. The text alone was enough to bring back the feeling of comfort Dos brought with him whenever they were together. She missed that feeling.
For the first time in a long time, she missed home. She missed him.
