"hey peter" i say, walking downstairs to meet him
the smile is wiped off my face as i see tears streaming down his face
"what's wrong, honey?" i ask, worriedly
he doesn't say anything as he wraps his arms around me, his body shaking with every sob
after a few minutes, he calms down slightly
"my- my aunt. she-she's in the hospital and they say she's not going to m-make it" he mumbles, crying again
i rub his back, holding him tightly
"everything is going to be okay" i say soothingly
once he's run out of tears, i hand him a cold washcloth before sending him to his room that he uses when he stays over sometimes
i run to tony's lab
"hey babe wh-" he stops himself when he sees me
"what happened? what's wrong?" he asks, worriedly as he runs over to me
"p-peter's aunt is in the hospital and they said she's not going to make it" i whisper
he takes my hand as he walks to peter's room, knocking
peter opens the door, with swollen eyes
"h-hey i just-" peter starts but is cut off by tony wrapping his arms around him
peter hugs back after the shock wears off and i smile at the sight

a few hours later, tony walks into our shared bedroom
"what's going to happen to him?" he asks quietly, talking about peter
"he's probably going to be put in an orphanage since he's only fifteen"
he doesn't say anything as he flops on the bed
i turn to him, tracing my fingers along his arm
"baby" i say, quietly
"yeah?" he hums
"can we adopt him?"
his head shoots towards me "i was about to ask you the same thing. it's been racking my brain all day"
i smile, kissing his lips
"let's go and get the form so we can bring it to her before-" i stop, not wanting to say it
he sits up, pecking my lips "i know what you mean"

*the next day*
tony and i wake up early, walking to peter's room
i'm surprised to see him already awake due to the fact that it's a saturday
i smile "let's go and see her"
he nods, walking into my open arms
i hug him before keeping my arm wrapped around his shoulders
happy drives us to the hospital
we walk to may's room, standing out front of it
"do you want us to come in?" i ask
peter shakes his head "i'd rather be with her alone. if that's okay"
i smile, weakly "okay. we'll be here when you're ready"
he nods, walking in
tony and i sit outside of the room, not wanting to bother their time left together
i hear a machine beep loudly and see doctors running into may's room
tony and i jump to our feet as peter comes running out and into my arms, sobbing
i hold him tightly as tony wraps his arms around the two of us
all three of us standing in the hallway, holding each other

the drive home is quiet
peter doesn't say a word as he sits between tony and i
when we get to the house, peter walks to his room without a word
tony and i don't stop him, knowing he needs to cope
~
several hours later, i hear a knock on the door of tony and i's room
i get up to open the door after receiving a confused look from tony
my eyes soften when i see peter nervously standing there, playing with his fingers
"c-can i come in?" he asks, softly
"of course" i say, letting him through before closing the door
i sit on the bed, next to tony as peter awkwardly stands there, staring at the floor
"my aunt, she-she told me that you guys wanted to adopt me and that she signed the papers. meaning that it's official" he whispers, glancing up at us
i nod, not knowing what to say
i see tears fall down his cheek, making me worry
"thank you" he says
i get up to hug him tightly before pulling away to look at his face
"these are happy tears" he reassures
i smile, pulling him into another hug
"don't thank us, honey. we are overjoyed to have you officially be ours"
"that's right" tony adds, wrapping his arms around the two of us "i'm so happy to have you actually be mine"
peter smiles widely, pulling away from the hug
"does that mean i get your last name?" he asks, shyly
tony laughs "if you want it. it's yours"
peter smiles widely "i want it. that way it'll be like a new start"
i smile "sounds perfect. peter stark"
tony smiles widely "we'll get it changed tomorrow"
peter nods, smiling "i can't wait"
"neither can we" i say, pulling both of my boys into another hug
