My lungs burned and oxygen seemed foreign. I had been running for what seemed like hours but was probably only minutes. I didn't exactly know where I was going.
I was lost.
It was dark and the moon was my only guide.
From time, I would feel like I was being followed but the hardest part was keeping up this pace.
I was never a runner.
Or into sports.
Don't get me wrong, I worked out from time to time but my stamina was horrible.
When a street light comes in view a few blocks away, I smile in content.
Light meant hope.
And hope meant...well, a chance.
When I reached the light, I could begin seeing better.
I was still in the bad part of town. I needed to leave, now.
Who knows what else is creeping in the darkness.
Or who?
Attempting to catch my breath, I frantically look around the partially dim streets in search of a
"Phone booth!" I exclaim
I race for it and search my pockets for money.
Nothing.
But when I search my hoodie, I find some.
I sigh in relief before putting the coin in.
Once I dial her number, I wait in angst for a response.
The click that indicates someone picked up sounds.
"Mum!" I exclaim
Silence.
"Mum?" I ask again
I hear chuckling.
"I'm impressed. I really didn't think you'd ever escape. Huh, I don't really blame you. My security is pretty bad."
I choke on a sob.
"Jackson?" I whisper
There's a slight pause.
"The one and only"
