They released Johnny from the hospital and we were walking home. I was still shocked at what Ponyboy said to me. Me? Beautiful? No way…. He’s got to be kidding. Sodapop was giving me a piggyback ride, since I was partly shocked. Johnny knocked me out of my thoughts, “Say, what day is it?” I looked at him as Ponyboy answered. “It’s December 15th. You’ve been out for two weeks.” He looked at me and smirked. “Callate o te lastime!” I said in Spanish, it translates to ‘shut up or I hurt you.’ I didn’t want them to know my birthday, cause as I said before the gang would go overboard. Johnny and the rest of the gang gave me a strange look, but Johnny then spoke. “Happy birthday, Jennie.” He knew that I didn’t want them to know. I jumped off Soda. “You better start running.” I said smirking at him and he nodded, “Yea that might be a good idea.” I nodded agreeing with him as he began to run towards our house. I raced after him and Ponyboy was running next to me. We soon caught up to Johnny and I tackled him to the ground. “I caught you.” I smirked pinning him down. “Damn, when did you get so fast?” He asked as the others got closer. I let him up and smirked, “When did you get so slow?” He glared at me. He put me in a headlock and ruffled my hair. I twisted his arm in return and shoved him away from me as we both began to laugh. “Damn Jennie wasn’t kidding when she said you weren’t quiet around her.” Two-Bit said. “Yea, I guess I’m not as quiet as you all thought.” Johnny said. “You guess my ass, we’re always shouting at each other across the house. I can’t believe you’re ever quiet.” I said and Johnny shrugged. “Wait so it today actually your birthday?” Soda asked and I slowly nodded. “Why didn’t you fucking tell us?” They all shouted at me. “We have to have a party.” Soda said and an idea came to me. “You can’t have a birthday party without the birthday girl.” I said and smiled. “What do you mean you’re right here?” Steve said and Johnny’s eyes widened as I sprinted off towards the high fence in the back of our house. It was a ten foot high chain link fence. I could hear the others running behind me as I climbed it skillfully and quickly, but I lost my balance at the top. I screamed and fell to the ground with a thud. It knocked the wind out of me and reinjured my ribs from when I was beaten by our dad. I couldn’t breathe for a minute as I heard Johnny climbing the fence and land beside me. Ponyboy followed him over. “Dammit Jennie, are you okay?” Johnny asked kneeling down. I nodded, “Just… c-can’t….. breath.” “You’re gonna be okay. Did you hurt your ribs again where Dad *gulp* hit you?” He asked and I nodded again. “Dang man you sure can be fast, you got ahead of me.” Pony said and I was beginning to regain my breath. “I don’t mess around when it comes to Jen. She’s my kid sister, but I don’t baby her, like you guys probably do.” Johnny said as he helped me stand and I leaned on him for support. “No man it’s more like the other way around. She baby’s us.” Steve said. Johnny looked at the rest of the gang who all nodded and then to me. I nodded also, “I yell at them at least once a day.” “Damn.” Johnny said as I began to climb up the fence. “Be careful this time.” He warned climbing up after me. “Yea, yea… I will.” I muttered jumping down with Johnny and Ponyboy soon following. We started walking home, well actually it was the Curtis house but that had become like my second home. We turned the corner and there he was the infamous Curly Shepard. I first met him at the DX at the beginning of the month and he had been seeing me everywhere since then. I decided to get rid of him for good when he saw me. “Wait here.” I said smirking and everyone stopped as I walked up to Curly. Curly was smirking at me and I could see that Johnny and Ponyboy were less than thrilled about this. “Finished playing hard to get babe.” He stated and smiled at him. “I guess so.” I said and his smirk grew. “About time. It’s almost like it’s destiny for us to be together. We keep seeing each other everywhere.” Curly said leaning against the wall next to me. “Yea, possibly, Curly do you like living?” I asked and this is where my plan began. “What?” He asked giving me a confused look. “Do you like to live? Ya know like, being alive.” I asked again and he looked up to the sky then back to me. He shrugged, “Yea, I guess so, why?” I shrugged and glanced down at the ground then back to him. “Well I was just wondering cause if you keep flirting and trying to get with me, I’m gonna kill ya. Understand?” I said my voice becoming cold. “What? What the hell do ya mean?” He asked facing me. “I mean rather leave me alone or you’re gonna end up buried in the ground. Now, get outta here!!!!” I shouted the last part with a thick fake New York accent that I picked up from Dallas and got right in his face, pointing down the street. He scrammed after that and I knew I wouldn’t have to deal with him again. The gang was all like “Whoa…” and Johnny was smiling at me proudly and clapping. “I have taught you well my sister.” He said and responded to him city style. “Bitch, you didn’t teach me shit.” I even did the finger snap and the head bob thing. The gang all stared in shock. “Jennie what the fuck happened to you? You’re going all city gal on us.” Dal said and I smiled. “Relax, Dallas, I just do a really good city chick impression.” “Wait, what kind of accent was that?” Johnny asked crossing his arms. “New York.” I said and he glared at Dallas. “What did I tell you about Dallas?” He asked and Dal was snickering. “Not to hang around him, but do I ever listen to you.” I said crossing my arms and smiling in triumph. Johnny opened his mouth to argue, but didn’t, instead he said, “You’ve got a point.” Dal came over to me and put his arm around my shoulder. “Don’t worry Johnnycakes, I wouldn’t hurt your sis. She’s cool.” I looked up at him and he looked down at me. “So you don’t want a party for your birthday?” Soda asked just to clarify. “Yes, I do not want a party.” I said and I saw Soda and Steve nod to Dal who then threw me over his shoulder. “Too bad, you’re getting one.” Steve said. Dal had my body across the back of his shoulders. His arm was around my right knee and the same hand was holding my right wrist. “Dallas Winston put me down this instant!” I shouted and he laughed shaking his head. Meanwhile Johnny was laughing his head off walking next to us. I slapped the back of his head. “You are such a good brother.” I said sarcastically. “I know I am.” He said smirking at me rubbing the back of his head.
