~Johnny's P.O.V.~

Dal, Pony, Shaun, Melanie, and I were in town down by the Dingo and DQ. Dal was in DQ to get out of the heat and Shaun and Melanie were over by one of the shops or whatever. Pony and I were standing in the shade drinking soda. He had a Pepsi and I had a Coke. I finished mine and went to go throw it away in a trash can around the corner. I threw it in the trash and when I turned around there stood that fucking Soc, Michael, which had jumped my sister about six months ago. He just smirked at me know exactly who I was and knowing also who Jennie was too. "What the fuck are you doing this far on Greaser territory buddy?!" I asked in an angry and cold voice. "Lookin' for you Grease..." He said and his smirk grew. "I have nothing I want to talk to you about, so you better leave before I beat your ass." I said. "Hey I ain't looking for trouble." He said and raised his hands up. "Then what exactly are you looking for?" I asked and little by little I felt my anger for this guy began to overtake my body. "To talk." "About what?" I responded back coldly. "You sister, Jennie... is it?" He said and I could almost feel the steam coming out of my ears. "I swear to fucking god if you touch her one more god damn time I will kill you and all of your fucking buddies, she's off limits especially to you!" I yelled at Michael and got in his face. He took a step away from me and smirked crossing his arms. "You know, it'd be a shame if something bad happened to her... like if she got jumped again, got beaten, or kidnapped, maybe while she was at, oh I don't know, the skate park alone..." I could physically feel the color drain from my face as he said this. He had me exactly where he wanted me. He was threatening Jennie to get something out of me. I pulled him against the wall forcefully. "What the fuck do you want Soc?!" I said through my teeth. Michael rubbed his chin and looked away as if thinking while he gave a small almost unnoticed smirk. "Hmmm... How about a little challenge there, Grease? Or I should say a bet?" "I don't want to bet anything with you Soc." I said low and could feel my eyes burning with anger. The Soc gasped slightly as if to come to a realization. "I believe Jennie's at the skate park now, isn't she?" He asked and my body froze. Michael shoved me away and took two steps before I stopped him. "Alright, what's the bet?" I asked and put my head down. He laughed, "How about we have ourselves a little drag race? Me verses you? You win, we'll leave Jennie and the rest of your friends alone for the rest of your lives." "What if you win?" I asked and nodded my head at him. I wasn't just going to agree to this bet without hearing what I'd be losing if I lost this bet. "We'll have it down on the Ribbon since that's the straightest street in Tulsa." He avoided my question. "What happens if you win?" I asked a second time but more forceful. "Let's wait two weeks; it'll get the word around. More people to watch you lose." He said and laughed at the end. "I'm gonna ask one more time you prick! What. Happens. If. I. Lose!?" I said and separated each word and got right in his face. He smiled and it was sarcastic almost. I knew whatever he wanted if I lost wasn't going to be good. "If I win, and you lose, I get to keep you sister." The color drained from my face so fast and I nearly collapsed from shock. "She becomes a Soc, and she becomes mine, forever." He said and leaned right into my face with that stupid smirk I now just wanted to slap off of him. "No." I said, it was the only thing I could muster up at the moment. "What was that Greaser?" He asked. "I said no, you can bet me anything but her. Money, you'll get it. To beat me up, you'll get the chance. Heck even to kill me, go right ahead. But Jennie is an absolute no; I am not betting her against you." I said and poked his chest with my finger. "Afraid, you'll lose, huh." He said and crossed his arms over his chest. I began to protest but he stopped me. "You know you'll lose that's why you won't make the bet. Ha! Fucking Greaser!" He glanced at his watch quickly then looked back up at me and smirked. "Hey boys! Get the car were going to the skate park!" He shouted over to a group of Socs who were standing next to a Mustang. Michael began to walk away from me and I panicked. "Alright! It's a bet! Be there! The Ribbon, two weeks, nine o'clock!" I said and Michael turned around smirking. He walked backwards and held his arms out to the side, almost like he was holding imaginary pizzas. "Alright, Grease, it's a bet." He said and with that he climbed in the car and they drove off. I breathed out and felt my anger begin to leave me. I could barely remember what I even said to him just moments before. I turned around to walk back to Pony only to find he wasn't too far behind me. His eyes were wide with shock and fear. "Dude, you just fucked up, big time..." He said and I gave him a confused look. "What? I can take that douche down in a drag race, it's not that hard to win one." I said shrugging and almost walked past him but he stopped me. "DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU JUST DID!?!" He shouted in my face. I stayed silent, so Pony knew that meant no. "You just bet your sister and my girlfriend, Jennie, in a drag race against the Soc that tried to rape her months ago." He said it slowly and I absorbed it all bit by bit. "You're lying." I said and the color drained from my face for the third time, my mouth went dry and my body ridged. Pony shook his head. "Tell me you're lying! Tell me this is a joke, you're playing on me!" I shouted at him and fisted his shirt in my hands. Pony shook his head again and I saw his eyes begin to get glossy and felt a single tear roll down my cheek. "I'm not lying Johnny." He said and I slammed him against the wall. "Ponyboy Curtis, I'm going to ask you a third time if you're lying and you best tell me you are." I said through gritted teeth. A few tears escaped his eyes and raced down his cheek, "I'm so sorry Johnny, but I'm not lying to you." My face softened, I knew he was telling the truth from the moment he said it, but I didn't want to believe it. I felt my grip loosen on Pony's shirt and I let go finally and placed my hand on the wall next to me for support. I thought back to when I was talking to Michael only just minutes before and now I remembered. Out of anger, fear, and panic I had bet my sister, the most important person in the world to me, against a Soc in a drag race. "Oh, man... Pony... you're right, I fucked up. I first bet her on a Soc in the first place and then I didn't even realize I did it. She's gonna hate me forever..." I said and at the end I closed my eyes and let a few tears fall down to the ground. Pony was about to say something so I wouldn't feel so bad but I stopped him. "Pony, please don't try and make me feel better, don't say she's not going to hate me because I know she is... the only person I absolutely can't live without is going to hate me... I don't even know if I'll be able to live with myself..." I said and rubbed my hands down over my face. "Who you talkin' 'bout? Is it Em?" I heard Dal ask and I turned to see him walking over with Shaun and Melanie was behind them quite a ways. "No, I'm talkin' 'bout Jennie..." I said and looked down. "Why on earth would she ever hate you? You're her brother!" Shaun said and I looked over at Pony who was looking at me. I nodded my head towards them. "You tell 'em, Pony. I don't think I will be able to..." I said and slouched against the wall and pulled out a cigarette. It's been quite a while since I've had one, only in extreme stress or sadness and right now it was both. I could hear Pony telling Dal and Shaun as I tried to figure out how to break the news to Jennie. It wasn't going to be easy, I knew that much. It would kill her far worse than it was killing me. It took almost all my strength to not start crying, I knew all bets would be off though when we got home. I don't care who was there and I don't care who saw, I was going to cry because there was a fifty percent chance I would lose my sister, forever. She's the only actually family I have left, and I can't live without her as much as she can't live without me... Melanie had come over and I guess she heard what Pony said to them because right as we were leaving she said this snarky sarcastic comment. "Awe... You bet Jennie in a drag race? What a shame..." Right after she said it, Dal, Shaun, and Pony gave her a deadly glare, but I could swear on my grave that I saw her smirk as she turned to walk ahead of us.
