Anna’s POV
“Oh no” I said when I hung up the phone “oh no no no”
“What?” Matt asked “Anna, what’s wrong?”
I pressed the palms of my hands into my eyes. Why was my life such a soap opera?
“Anna?” Matt said again, this time forcing me to answer
“Bretts at the house” I exclaimed “He knows, he knows okay?”
“How much does he know?” Matt asked, his voice as calm as could be
“Well probably everything” I said “We ran off together without telling anyone, we disappeared for the night and now we are coming home a little closer then we left”
“Not to mention you got some serious sex hair happening” Matt teased, reaching over and ruffling up my hair. I swatted his hand away
“Stop it” I snapped “This is not funny”
“Of course it’s not funny” Matt replied “But it was going to happen anyway. It’s just happening sooner than you would have liked”
I sunk into my seat, crossing my arms over my chest. I so did not want to do this today.
When we pulled onto the road leading to the house the sun was high in the sky and everything was pleasant. Inside the car things weren’t so much that way; my mood had deteriorated from the blissful one I woke up with this morning to one that was rather bitchy. The only thing that kept me from snapping completely was that Matt had reached over and laced our fingers together, giving me a constant reminder of last night.
When we pulled into the drive way though, the last remnants of my good mood were washed away. Matt’s hand tightened on mine and looking over at him I saw a grim determined look on his face. It wasn’t hard to figure out why. Ben was standing on the driveway, arms crossed over his chest and there was a murderous expression on his face as the car came to a stop.
“It will be alright Anna” Matt said, still keeping his eyes on Ben “Just trust me”
We got out of the car then, Matt wouldn’t let me walk in front of him. He kept me at least one pace behind him as we approached Ben. Peaking over Matt’s shoulder I could see that this situation was not about to get any better.
“Where have you been?” Ben demanded, trying to get a good look at me from over Matt’s shoulder. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he already knew what had happened, even if no one told him. He took a step forward and Matt completely blocked him from me.
“Back off Ben” He growled, sounding more menacing then I had ever heard him
“No you back off” Ben snapped “Let me talk to my girlfriend”
“Ben” I said from behind Matt “I’m sorry”
“What the hell is going on Anna?” Ben demanded “Where have you been?”
“Ben” I tried to say calmly “Calm down”
“NO!” Ben yelled “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?”
“She was with me” Matt raised his voice “So back off”
“No you back off” Ben shoved Matt backwards, causing him to nock into me. I knew the instant that he did that that this situation was going to get ugly. Sure enough, Matt launched himself at Ben, tackling him to the ground. I screamed. Both men were grappling on the ground, both getting punches in on each other’s faces.
“Stop it” I exclaimed “Guys stop it”
But neither of them listened. I continued screaming until the front door opened up and Devin and Tim came running out. The look of shock on their faces would have been comical if the situation at hand hadn’t been so upsetting. When they saw Matt and Ben fighting they jumped in, ripping them apart. Ben had a cut above his eyes and possibly a black eye to match, but it looked like Matt had taken the brunt of the punches. His face was relatively bloody and already bruised. Ben looked murderous.
“You slept with my girlfriend you son of a bitch!” He roared, trying to fight agains Tim’s hold on him
Matt looked like he was about to say something that I doubted would be very nice so I stepped in. Standing between them I looked Ben in the eye, some of the fight drained out of me when he saw me.
“That’s enough” I snapped, then more gently “Ben I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you”
All the fight drained out of Ben then and he just stared at me.
“Why Anna?” He asked
Tears trickled down my cheeks, I didn’t like hurting him.
“Because I love him” I said “Because he’s the only one I can really be happy with. I know you know that”
I could tell by the defeat in his eyes that he did know that. Slowly, Tim released his hold on Ben and Ben didn’t launch himself at Matt again. Instead he took a step forward and looked me in the eyes.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” He asked
I nodded
“I’m sorry” I said “But it’s over”
Ben gave me one last long sad look before glancing up at Matt who had also been released. He gave him a bitter look.
“If you fuck this up again” he said “I will finish your face off”
With that he got into his car and left. The rest of us stood in the driveway for a moment in awkward silence. I wiped the tears away from my face and looked up at the tree remaining men. Tim and Devin were starring between me and Matt in astonishment and
Matt was trying to stop the bleeding that was coming from his face.
“Don’t look at me like that” I snapped “Shit happens”
I stomped up the steps and opened the door to the house. Looking over my shoulder I saw Matt was still standing in the driveway, looking smugly at his brother and still bleeding.
“Mathew” I snapped “Get in here”
Matt jumped and hurried up the steps to follow me, as I walked into the kitchen I could hear laughter following us.
In the kitchen I sat Matt down in a chair. Grabbing the first aid kit and a warm wash cloth. As I started dabbing at the blood Devin and Tim walked in, followed by my mother who was looking both confused and concerned.
“What the hell is going on” She exclaimed when she saw us “Where have you two been?”
I could tell by the look in her eyes that if one of us didn’t say something right now, we would be grounded for life…and we were in our twenties.
“It was my fault” Matt said, wincing slightly as I dabbed at an already bruised part on his cheek “I found Sara”
My mom’s eyes widened in surprise and her lips parted slightly. I understood how she felt, I was still trying to get over it myself.
“So?” She asked, this time looking at me. I felt my cheeks grow hot.
“We went to go see her” I said
“So where have you been for the past twenty four hours?” She demanded “Why haven’t you called?”
I had finished wiping the blood off of Matt’s face and turned to the sink.
“Annabelle?” My mother demanded harshly “Where have you been?”
“We spent the night together!” I shrieked “Why does everyone keep asking me that! I found out the truth and shit happened! Deal with it”
There was another awkward silence, everyone was staring at me with opened mouth expressions.
“Anna” Matt began to say
“No” I yelled “If you had just left it alone everything would be fine”
“Everything would not be fine” Matt yelled “We would be stuck exactly where we were, we would be miserable”
“We wouldn’t be being prosecuted for being adults” I screamed
“We weren’t prosecuting you” My mother yelled “We just want to know where you are so you weren’t dead!”
“Well I wasn’t” I snapped “I’m fine”
“Anna” Devin said “Why are you being like this?”
I turned on him, wide eyed and tears streaming down my face.
“Why is this family always about drama?” I shrieked “Why can’t we just be normal?”
“Anna” Matt said, standing up and reaching out for me “Sweet heart”
“No” I cried, jumping away from him “One second things are good and the next they are bad. I can’t do this Matt, I won’t”
I never thought I would actually be able to see someone’s heart break. But when I said those words I could see it in Matt’s eyes. I could see his heart shatter as he understood.
“No” he said “Anna please”
“I’m sorry Mathew” I whispered “But the first flight I can get out of here, I’m taking”
