Have I ever told you how much I hate hospitals?
First my mother and now my baby brother.
Everything seemed to go in slow motion as I watched the paramedics rush my brother into the Emergency Room.
Harry and I stood there, watching. His arms held me tightly. I cried out all my tears. I was now only hiccuping.
Please let him be okay.
~Flashback~
A few days before my dad died, my mom became pregnant. She was carrying my little brother or sister around in her tummy, keeping him safe.
"Hello? Anyone home?" I giggle.
My mom laughs and pats my head.
My ear was pressed up against her tummy, trying to hear my little brother or sister.
"He can't hear you yet." she smiles.
"So it's a boy!" Bradley smiles. "Im going to have a little brother?"
"Don't be silly. Mommy is having a girl." I stick my tounge out at Bradley.
My mom hushes us and pulls us close. My dad walks into the room and puts his hands on his hips.
"What is this? A family hug without pops?"
*9 months later*
I stand on my tiptoes, trying peak over the side of the bed. It was just too high.
"Here you go." A nurse lifts me up and sits me next to my mom.
My mommy looked tired and ready to fall asleep any second, but then they put something in her arms.
My baby brother!
I climb up next to them and cuddle into my mom's side.
I stick out my pinky and hook it around my little brother's.
"We are gunna be best friends forever."
~End of Flashback~
The big glass doors next to me and in walks a bruised and bleeding Bradley. His eyes meet mine and they widen.
The anger boils inside me. It felt like I was going to burst.
I escape from Harry's arms and attack my older brother.
"YOU BLOODY ASSHOLE! HOW COULD YOU!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, pounding his face with my fists.
Bradley tried to grab my wrists but he couldn't. My anger was too much and he was badly injured already.
"YOU PROMISED."
Harry intervenes and pulls me off of the floor. He holds me in his arms, ignoring the fact I was clawing and scratching at him, yelling for him to let me go.
"Shh love. It's not worth it. Please calm down." he softly kisses the top of my head, calming me down.
The nurses get Bradley off the ground and take him to a room to get checked out.
"Samantha?"
I lift my head from Harry's chest and look at the man in front of me.
"Officer Vallas." he extends his hand for me to shake but I just stare at it.
He awkwardly clears his throat and returns his hand to his side. He takes a seat next to me.
"I understand that your mom passed away a little over a month ago. This must be really hard for you."
Was he trying to make me feel worse?
"Your brother was driving under the influence. Your little brother was in the front seat. Bradley ran a red light and slammed head on into another car." He takes a deep breath before continuing. "The seatbelt didn't hold your little brother in and he hit the winshield."
My heart sunk, sunk so far down that I couldn't even feel it beat.
A nurse slowly walks up to us and places her hand on Harry's shoulder.
"You may go in and see Jack now."
Never in my life have I ran so fast. I ran further and further down the hallway with Harry and the nurse chasing after me. I ignore countless warnings to 'slow down' and to 'watch where im going'.
I reach his room but can't bring myself to open the door.
"Samantha!"
Harry slows down when he reaches me, the nurse not far behind him.
"This is a hospital, not a gymnasium."
For my sake, and the nurses', Harry shoos her away.
I slowly reach for the knob and twist it.
My little brother. My best friend.
He wasn't moving and he surly wasn't breathing.
I walk over and hold his hand. It no longer held that familiar warmth I was used to.
Why do bad things happen to good people?
The doctor comes in and stands on the opposide side of the bed.
"I promise you we will do everything we can to..."
"Pull the plug." I cut him off.
Harry and the doctor look at me, stunned.
"Samantha," Harry whispers.
"I don't want him to suffer."
The doctor nods his head and slowly moves to the back of the bed.
"Goodbye Jack." I whisper.
I lean down and softly kiss him on the forhead.
There was a loud beep and the machines keeping the little boy alive, were turned off.
And just like that, he was gone.
