{Next thing you'll read is written by me, but when I was done I saw something close to it on tumblr so I changed some things to make it better ;)}
Headcanon that Alyss always left a note for Will when she had gone off to the Castle or something. And it was always in the Courier's code. She knew Will didn't know the code as well as she did, so it was both to help and to tease him. At the beginning, Will always takes the time to translate it, but when he comes home one day (from a mission or his round through Redmont idk) he sees another note and he is just done with it for a moment (or two) so he doesn't translate it. He doesn't even unfold the paper to look at it. Then Alyss comes home and she notices in an instant that he hasn't even opened the note.
"Honestly, Will, I don't know what wasn't to understand about my note," Alyss sounded slightly exasperated. "It was very clear-"
"Alyss, it was written in code," leaning against the table, Will responded in kind.
"Yes, and you're a Ranger so you should know how to read these messages."
"I know the usual codes to start and end with," Will defended himself. "It's when you start using new codes that I have trouble."
"And what if there is a situation in which someone doesn't use one of the usual codes and it's a matter of life and death that you know what it means? Then you have to be able to translate it on your own and as quick as possible. I'm only helping you."
"Well..." hesitating in answering on the 'what if', Will shifted uncomfortably.
Alyss sighed. "Halt always handles that, doesn't he?"
"Would you just tell me what the note said?" he asked, without answering her question. It was true and she knew that anyway. "I can't tell if you're angry and it'd be nice to have a hint." He had left without telling her, only leaving a note – in normal language.
"I'm not angry," Alyss turned around to smile at him. Will could see that she spoke the truth in the way her grey eyes twinkled until they looked close to silver. She leaned down and lightly pressed her lips to his. There was just enough time for Will to smile against her mouth before she pulled back and went back to the large bunch of papers.
"I still want to know what the note said," Will declared after watching her for a moment.
"Of course you do," Alyss laughed gently. "I only asked if you could next time tell me in person you're leaving instead of using a note. And if you'd really have to leave a note, if you could do it in code."
"Why did you have to use a note in code for that? You could just as well have told me like you're doing now."
"Same with you. Besides, I'm trying to help you. It was just a simple code."
"Codes are never simple," Will grumbled. It lasted only a few seconds before he looked back up, a new question ready on his tongue and in his eyes. "What were the exact code words?"
"Now that you know the contents of the message, you can figure that out yourself."
"Really?"
"Really."
That night, after they had dinner and after Alyss had already went to sleep, Will sat up at the table on his own, leaning over the note from Alyss he'd found earlier that day. He unfolded the paper.
But it wasn't what he had expected. It wasn't a bunch of words, as it normally was. It was only three words.
Now Will smiled at them, first written in Alyss neat handwriting and next to it in his own slanted handwriting.
