We all know Gilan is the master in moving unseen; no one in the entire Ranger Corps is as good as he is. When he started as an apprentice in Redmont, he wasn't the best, though he did already have quite some basics.
Now imagine. As always, Halt wants Gilan to do the housework. But Gilan doesn't want to, so he hides in the forest. Halt goes searching for him, but he is not able to find his apprentice, because Gilan has hidden way too well in the forest. After having had a big part of the forest, Halt goes back to his cabin. When Gilan finally gets back, Halt pretends to have seen him, but he just did as if he wasn't to see how long Gilan would be able to stay there - "Not very long I see."
But little does he know, Gilan had been following him through the forest.
