Jay’s hand grasped mine so tightly I thought it would fall off; his mother was off leading the way. We had already bought make-up, I still trying to work out why that was needed. But now I had some casual clothes, undies and bras.

“Nice mate you got there, think we could borrow her for a while. We promise we wouldn’t hurt her much.” The sturdy voice laughed, I whipped my head around to look at the man, but before I could see him Jay had pushed me behind him.

“Trevor, what are you doing here? I thought the last time we told you to scram, you got the idea. Unless you need another lesson?” Spat Jay, I suddenly found myself being dragged away by Jay’s mum. The minute we were away from the scene she practically ran with me to the car. Once we were in, she locked it, as I saw other people from the pack heading towards where the man had been. Suddenly the car was moving. The women’s head snapped around to look at me,

“You smell like him, you’ve met him before haven’t you? That’s the only reason you could smell like him, or you’re related.” Her eyes narrowed at me suspiciously. We drove in silence for a while, when we came to a stop. We were outside a school; Jay opened my door before I could reach it. His arm went protectively around my back, leading me in the direction of a class room. When a low growl escaped his lips, he stiffened and stopped walking.

“Why does she smell like him?” He growled angrily. His mother didn’t say anything, but I could tell some sort of communicating was going on. He growled, before gripping my arm and dragging me to the class room. Upon entering Jay released his grip on my arm and held my hand gently instead.

“Jay, how nice to see you. Oh and I see you brought Lucy. I’ve heard so much about you, how about we start your testing.” She asked sweetly.

“Testing” I barely whispered the word, but everyone understood the meaning, fear. Memories; bad memories. I tour my hand from Jays grasp and sprinted out of the room.

“Lucy!” The women’s voice echoed after me. Tears poured out of my eyes, as my breathing turned into short gasps of air. The forest edge was so close, I could leave. I could be happy, no I couldn’t. My happiness was family and they were gone. I began jumping over fallen tree’s as I ran, until I fell. When I turned around, fighting for my breath while I cried. Jay appeared next to me, he crouched down next to me.

“Lucy, everything’s ok, but we need to do these tests.” He told me, I looked up at him and shimmied myself backwards until I was pushed right up against a tree.

Jay’s POV

I watched her push herself back in fear. What was it about tests which had her so, freaked?

“Lucy, come with me, no one will hurt you while I’m around.” I told her trying to calm her down. I gently took her hand in mine and helped her up. She began to shrink back but I pulled her towards me.

“No! You’re a murderer! You killed my family” She screamed as she spun on her feet and went to sprint in the other direction, but I wrapped an arm around her waist.

“Lucy, c’mon. Let’s go talk to the nice woman, it’s not safe to be out here” I told her while dragging her back to the class room. My mum was standing outside next to my geography teacher. I lead the still shaking Lucy inside and sat her down on the chair next to the teacher.

“Lucy, can you write something for me?” Mrs Fillina asked politely, Lucy looked at the pen nervously then back to Mrs Fillina, then to me and my mother.

“I can’t write,” she whispered.  Mrs Fillina looked surprised; she then looked back at Lucy and said

“Can you do any maths? Can you read?”

“Maths? What’s that?” Lucy asked innocently. Oh. I thought she had had some sort of education, but obviously not. I watched my mum walk outside; I gave Mrs Fillina a nod and followed her out. She was standing against a tree, and looking towards the forest.

“I wonder what your father would think of her?” She asked absentmindedly, she was thinking about him. I had always wondered what it felt like for my dad, when mum had thought he was stuck up, and barely talked to him. I guess I know how, horrible and painful.

“Dumb, he would think her dumb. But she’s never had any education mum. How is she going to learn if she doesn’t know how to read or write?” I asked her, my mum was smart, she had always been good with children and knew how to use them against people, and it was a weird trait. But she could get all the children to yell and scream, and get them to keep going until dad gave into her.  Let’s just say on the rare occasions they fight, it got real loud.

“He would be dumbstruck, probably wouldn’t think her good enough and would try to do the impossible” she chuckled, “he always did try to mess with everything. I remember him complaining that his sister’s mate was rude, and he tried to get him to leave. But his sister got so mad and threatened to leave. He folded at that point and agreed that IF he would summit then he would let him stay.” She smiled at the memory.  “He would try to stop you two, or try to make her weaker. She doesn’t need to be held down, he wouldn’t see this. He would see her as weak and abuseble. I loved him, but he was so blind, so stupid and sexist.  She needs to be allowed to grow and blossom, you two were matched well.” My mother finally finished. We headed back inside to see Mrs Fillina handing Lucy different flash cards. A bag already secured in Lucy’s hand.

“These will help you learn to read, and add. The teachers will help you with the rest once you start school” She told her kindly. I reached over Lucy and took the flash cards from Mrs Fillina while my mother took the bag off Lucy.

“Thank you Mrs Fillina, your help is much appreciated, please say hello to your mate for me” I told her curtly before holding Lucy’s hand and leading her back to the car. The drive home was quiet, Lucy being silent as always, and my mother probably contemplating why Lucy smelled like that man. Once we arrived home I led Lucy up to her room.

“Lucy, do you know that man?” I asked her, trying to pry the words out of mind.  Imaged of who she thought the man might be jumped in and out of my reach, but never settled.

“Lucy please, I need to know” I was practically begging her to say anything. But her lips stayed sealed, and the only thoughts were memories of her and what looked to be her brother. I sighed and let her be, walking out of her room and into mine. I flopped on the bed and closed my eyes.

Lucy’s POV

Alex’s face flashed if I was right, that voice belonged to him. It had been a long time since I had seen him, but he always knew how to make me happy. I was never gonna tell Jay about him. He would kill my last family member. I wouldn’t let him; I just needed to get to Alex, to talk to him. To escape. I heard a light knock at the door and wiped away the few escaping tears. When I opened the door Jay’s mother dropped the bag she had been holding and engulfed me in a hug.

“What’s wrong sweatie?” she asked kindly. I looked up into her eyes and the world seemed to stop, it was like nothing else mattered but telling her.

“He will kill him, I can’t tell him who he is or he will kill him” more tears were running freely down my face.

“It’s Ok Lucy, nothing’s wrong” she smiled glumly before releasing me from her bear hug and picking up the bag. “Why don’t you try on the uniform for me?” she handed me the bag, and then shooed me into the bathroom. I locked the door behind me, only to find that another door led out the other way. I gently pushed the door open, to find Jay lying on the bed asleep. I quickly shut the door and locked it, thinking to what my brother would have done if he was here. He would have laughed at the fact that we had an adjoining bathroom. He used to hate sharing rooms, and found it funny when others had to share a room. Of course he didn’t get the choice most of the time, it was sleep in a room with all of us, or on the floor outside. I stripped and started putting on the tartan dress. I slipped open the door and walked in and twirled like I used to for my brother when I got new clothes.

A/N I tried and succeed to not get side tracked. And finished the chapter, amazing what you can do if you put your mind to it. Not sure when I will update the next chapter, gotta come up with something good first... But I will try and do it sooner
