< Chapter 101: Squeezing Hands >

♥ Justin’s POV: ♥

“Hello?”

I tightened my hold on my phone as I heard the all-too-familiar voice speak.

“Mom?” I said, pacing the hallway.

“Justin? What’s wrong, sweetie?” her voice sounded concerned.

“Nothing, Mom. Umm,” I paused, sucking in a breath of air. “Mom?”

“I’m listening, honey.”

“I’m at the hospital here with Jamie,” I said, my heart beating loudly in my chest.

“Oh my god, what happened?!” she panicked.

“Nothing, nothing, she’s okay, she’s umm… She’s in labor,” I said, as calmly as I could.

Labor?! My grandson’s coming any time now? Oh dear Jesus, I’ll be there in a few minutes, alright?” she told me, sounding more excited now.

“Okay mommy,” I spoke like a child while I still could, knowing that in a couple of hours or so, I’d be a father.

I’m going to be a father. Holy shit, I’m going to be a father.

“Justin!” I turned around at the sound of my name being called out. I spotted Ryan jogging over to me, trying to catch his breath. “Is she at the delivery room?”

“Yeah, but she’s still in labor. I’m going inside in a sec,” I nodded, staring wide eyed at him. Ryan paused, raising an eyebrow as he examined me from head to toe.

“Are you okay? You look so… Umm.. what’s the word?” he pondered, tapping his chin with his index finger. “Dude, you look like you’re dying of nervousness. I think I even see you sweating.”

I cleared my throat, resuming my past actions in pacing back and forth. “I’ve been here a while, I don’t know,” I ran a hand across my forehead, picking up the sweat that covered the skin.

“You want water? You look like you could use some,” he commented, concern flashing in his eyes.

“God, Ryan, no,” I rubbed my temples. “Oh my god,” I leaned over, both hands on my knees as I took deep breaths.

“Wow, if anyone looks at you, they’d think you’re the one giving birth,” he chuckled, causing me to glare at him.

“Shut up,” I murmured, regaining my composure before looking at him. “Do you have a bag with you?”

He narrowed his eyes at me. “A bag?”

I nodded.

“Not with me right now but I have one in my car. Why?” he questioned curiously. I paused before dipping one hand inside my right pocket, pulling out a small, black case.

“Could you run to your car real fast and just store this in there? It’d mean the world to me and promise me you’ll guard it with your life,” I rushed my words. He eyed the item in my hand before staring back at me.

“What is it?” he asked, his gaze switching back to the case before his eyes widened. “Is that what I think it is?” he gasped. “Oh crap.

“Shh!” I hushed, running a hand through my hair.

“Justin…” he trailed off as he stared at the black case for a while longer. “You were going to propose to Jamie tonight… Weren’t you?”

I blinked three times, and stared at the floor, avoiding his gaze. “I was,” I whispered. “N-Not.. Not anymore.”

“Why not?”

“Fucking shit, Ryan, she’s in fucking labor!” I scoffed. “Now please promise me that one: you won’t tell anyone about me proposing, and two: you make sure this ring gets safely in your car. Got it?”

“Can I see the ring?” he asked.

“No,” I said protectively. “I want Jamie to be the first one to see it. You understand where I’m coming from, right?”

“Yeah, it’s—”

“–I’m sorry,” I added.

“No really, it’s okay,” he smiled, taking the case from my hand. “You’re quite the romantic.”

“Thanks,” I said, patting his shoulder. “I’m giving it to you because I trust you. And you’ve never let me down.”

“And that means the world,” he nodded assuringly before leaving down the hall to complete the task I ordered him to do. I then counted people in my head to make sure I called everyone who’d want to be here for Jamie. I already called her parents, my parents, obviously Ryan, Phoebe, Chaz, and even texted Megan to let her know.

Convincing myself that, that was enough, I walked back into the delivery room where Jamie laid on the bed, her face lighting up once she saw me step in.

“Your parents are on the way and so are mine,” I informed her, sitting right beside her and holding her hand.

“I can last without my parents as long as I have you with me,” she forced a smile though I knew she was in pain.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, brushing a few strands of hair from her face. “I hate seeing you like this, I-… I’m sorry.”

“Justin, this isn’t your fault,” she sighed.

“Well, I did get you pregnant so it’s technically my fault,” I pointed out.

“Do you really think I’ll change anything? I want this baby whether it means I’m in pain or not so stop worrying about me,” she reassured me, relaxing me a little. Suddenly, she let out a small cry in pain, breathing heavily for a while and closing her eyes tight.

“Are you okay?” I asked softly, and her eyes shot open before she smacked my arm.

“What the fuck does it look like? Am I shitting happiness to you? Are there rainbows coming out of my butt or something? Of course I’m okay because contractions don’t hurt at all, you know,” she snapped sarcastically. “Oh wait… You don’t know, wanna know why? Because you’re not a girl so you don’t have to go through this shit!”

I blinked at her in awe, taken aback by her sudden outburst. Gee, and I thought the pregnancy was hormonal.

“I’m just worried,” I said defensively.

“Worried? You got such a nice job there. How about I pass on this belly over to you so you can give birth while I sit next to you and worry my ass off!” she yelled. I immediately turned away from her so she couldn’t see my face because, to be completely honest, I found that really hilarious. But if I laughed in front of her, she’ll probably snap again.

When the need to laugh washed away, I turned back around to look at her and she seemed to have calmed down, meaning the contraction was gone.

“I’m just gonna take the time to apologize for all the bitchy remarks I’m going to scream at you for the next few hours and/or minutes,” she sighed, throwing her head back against the pillow.

“You’re doing great, babe,” I stood up, leaning over her bed so our faces hovered. I kissed her cheek, then her forehead, then her nose, and finally her lips, letting it linger there for far longer than it should’ve.

“Wow, thanks,” she said sarcastically, and I chuckled.

“How about I just go get you some water. You look dehydrated,” I suggested, turning to leave before she grabbed my hand, holding me back.

“No,” she groaned. “Don’t leave me. I need someone to yell at.” I laughed, watching as she smiled at her own joke. “Just kidding, I love you and I need you. Please. Let someone else bring me water. I’ll ask Mom if she comes in.”

“Okay,” I grinned. “From now on, I promise I’m not leaving this room without you… Unless I have to pee.”

“Nah, you’re not allowed to leave even then,” she winked. “You might have to pee in a bucket while I watch you.”

“Oh god and I’m the pervert?” I scoffed teasingly. She nodded her head innocently before pulling me closer. Her mouth opened to say something but immediately closed as her hand squeezed mine. Hard.

I ignored the pain she was creating on my hand as I watched her with a blank expression while she held in the cry of pain from the current contraction she was experiencing. Not once complaining, I let her squeeze my hand even tighter as I wiped sweat from her face with my free hand, kissing her temple. She then relaxed, looking up at me with a guilty face.

“Sorry,” she released my hand. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“It wasn’t really hurting me,” I shrugged. “I don’t care if you squeeze my hand or smack my arm. I’m right here if you need me. I promise.”

She let out a sigh of relief. “Why do you have to be so amazing?”

“I should ask you the same thing,” I held her hand in mine, caressing her  palm with my thumb. “You’re about to give me the gift of being a father.”

She blushed, jerking her head forward slightly so that her hair now covered her face. I was about to say something else when the clicking of heels against the floor interrupted me, causing me to look up and see Jade entering the room, her eyes full of tears.

“Jamie,” she whispered, running to her and giving her a hug. “How are you feeling, baby?”

Danny followed behind her as they both stood on the opposite side of the hospital bed.

“I’m fine,” she murmured, looking at me. “But he’s the reason why.”

I smiled reassuringly at her, kissing her cheek once more before gazing dreamily into her eyes.

God, I want to make it official. I want to be all hers. I want to call her my wife. I want to spend the rest of my happy life with her. Jason chose the wrong time to decide to pop out from that belly, but that’s okay. I’ll just propose some other time, when she’s out of the hospital and feeling better. Maybe one of these days… Soon.

It took me so long to work my nerves and even then, I wasn’t exactly doing a good job. She sensed something was wrong and I reassured her it was nothing because, well.. I can’t really tell her I’m planning on asking her to marry me. I haven’t told anyone about it. Not a single soul. I know my fans won’t take it well at first but they’ll soon realize that she makes me happy—if they haven’t realized it already.

If my beliebers really care about me, they’ll be happy for me. I think I’ve grown a lot over the past few years, I think I can make my own decisions now. Ones I know I can live with in ease.

I’m really bad at hiding this, though. I didn’t mean to make her feel like I wasn’t feeling well, I just get shy sometimes when I’m with her because all I can think about is popping the big question at the right moment. The picnic tonight obviously failed and I planned it for days. It took me forever to come up with the right, romantic setting to propose in. I thought if Jamie and I grew up in front of that tree and watching the sunset was something we both enjoyed since we were little—plus the fact that we had a picnic the day she told me about the pregnancy—I thought it was the perfect way to propose.

But now what?

I can’t ask her to go again, that just wouldn’t be smooth. I have to think bigger.

“Justin?” Danny’s voice startled me, snapping me from my thoughts.

“Hmm?” I hummed, looking up at him.

“You look like you want to throw up… Are you nervous?” a smile was evident on his face and I just nodded quietly.

“Nervous doesn’t even begin to describe what I’m feeling. To say it does is a huge understatement,” I sighed, sitting back down on the chair beside Jamie. I could feel Danny’s eyes on me as he walked over so that he now stood right in front of where I sat.

“You know,” he began. “You’re reminding me of myself when I was somewhere around your age too, sitting in a chair similar to that one next to Jade, in a bed similar to Jamie’s right now. I was an emotional mess, alright? I was so jumpy and anxious about being a father and it turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to me,” his gaze switched over to Jamie. “I love you, sweetheart. You can do it.”

“I love you too, Dad,” Jamie smiled weakly, before clutching on to my hand tightly, squeezing it harder and harder, making it obvious she was getting another contraction.

“Breathe,” I whispered soothingly, “In,” I sucked in a breath of air before escorting it from my mouth, “And out.” I repeated the process several times, breathing in and out along with her so she didn’t feel like she was doing it all alone. Danny, Jade and I watched as Jamie calmed down, throwing her head back on the pillow again.

“It hurts,” she groaned. “Someone kill me.”

I chuckled lightly. “No one’s going to kill you. You’ll make it through this, I promise.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” she narrowed her eyes at me, but I just shrugged.

“But I will if I can keep them,” I said confidently, and she rolled her eyes teasingly before looking at her mother.

“Mom? Can you get me some water please?” she asked nicely.

Jade nodded almost right away. “Of course, sweetie,” she said before leaving the room in a rush, just about the same time as the doctor who introduced herself as Dr. Greene earlier today came in. She checked up on Jamie before giving us all a smile.

“She’s halfway there, just 5 more centimeters dilated and we can begin the delivery,” she said before speaking to Jamie directly. “We’ll get you something else for the pain.”

“Thank you,” Jamie choked out, and I squeezed her hand again, reminding her I’m right here if she needed me. Just then, Jade came back with about 5 bottles of water and something told me it wasn’t all only for Jamie. She seemed pretty nervous herself.

Jamie thanked her mom and Ryan burst in the room, eyeing me with unspoken communication. The minute he nodded slightly, giving me a small smile, I knew that the task I had given him had been completed successfully, lifting weight from my shoulders I didn’t even know I was carrying.

Thanks, I mouthed and he winked in response, walking towards Jamie to greet her. We all chatted for a while until Danny reminded us that only four people are allowed in the room with Jamie at a time, so we should probably give other people a chance. Since Jamie wouldn’t let me leave her side, that only left three other people besides us to be able to come inside, so Ryan, Jade and Danny left while my mom, dad and Erin came in. I was so happy to see all 3 of them and we all greeted each other in hugs.

“Are the little rascals at home?” I smirked, referring to Jazzy and Jaxon.

Erin laughed, nodding her head. “Yeah, they got sleepy. It’s pretty late for them.”

“Jamie, how are you feeling?” Dad asked, giving her a sincere look, the fact that he was going to be a grandfather anytime soon still sinking in.

“Why does everyone keep asking that?” Jamie giggled quite humorlessly, most likely still in severe pain.

“Sorry,” Dad threw his hands up in defense, chuckling to himself.

“No, no.. I’m sorry. You’re just asking so you deserve an answer. I’m okay, thanks Jeremy,” she smiled, taking large gulps from her water bottle.

We all talked for a while before they left, Phoebe, Noah and Chaz coming in afterwards.

“Rule number one,” Jamie said quickly, raising her index finger up. “You’re not allowed to ask how I’m feeling.”

I let out a loud laugh while everyone else was just plainly confused. I leaned close to Jamie’s ear and whispered, “I love you,” in helpless giggles before kissing the top of her head and sitting back down.

“Okay…” Phoebe said. “I’m not even gonna ask.”

“Good,” Jamie winked, before closing her eyes tightly, mentally trying to ease her pain.

“I can’t believe you two are having a baby,” Chaz breathed, blinking at us in awe.

“You had like, 9 months to process it, you know,” Noah pointed out.

“Well I’ve been their best friend since we were little so it’s still sinking in,” he murmured. “Plus, can you believe it?”

“Not really…”

“Exactly my point,” Chaz smirked in victory, crossing his arms in front of him, while I was still trying to process the fact that we’re having a baby today.
