Chapter two- Mr Raynerson

Cecilia's POV

Sitting in the kitchen with Marlene and her husband who's name I found out is Fred, while we ate our breakfast, in comfortable silence.

I have to look for a job, so that I can afford to provide for myself. I don't want to live on the streets. The thought alone made a shiver go down my spin.

"Cecilia do you mind if I ask you a question, I don't want to over step in to your personal life." Fred asked politely. I can sense his uneasiness and I can just imagine Marlene sending him a not so nice look.

"Of course I don't mind Fred what is it that you wish to ask?" I replied politely, while finishing off my piece of fruit.

"I was just wondering if you were born blind or if something happened?" He asked in uneasy voice.

Fighting back a shrug so that he didn't notice how much his question bothered me.

I know that his curious; but still I have been asked this question all my life.

"I was born blind" I replied while keeping my face blank and my tone polite.

Reaching out for my cup and carefully feeling for the handle as I don't wish to spill it everywhere.

Once I had it safely in my hand I brought it to my lips and took a drink. I am not to fond of tea but I don't want to be rude since Marlene made it for me.

"Marlene I was wondering if you knew of any jobs going on in town?" I asked because it would be so much easier for me to find one if I new where to start looking.

"Hmm, there is a couple that I know of. Let me just grab the paper, and read to you what they are." She replied while I heard her chair scrap across the wooden floor.

Waiting patiently as I heard the pages of the newspaper crinkle.

"Well the first job is for a maid, then there is one for a seamstress, or a live in nanny, and last there is one for a Gardner." Marlene finished.

Hmm, I am not good a cleaning and it would be difficult for me to figure out where everything goes.

Plus I am not that good a sowing at least not in a straight line. I couldn't help but grimace remembering the last time that I tried to sow.

Now the nanny, I don't think a couple would like a person that can't see to look after then children.

Which leaves the gardener job which I am actually good at, I'm a garden fairy after all, but it is up to the person if they wish for someone of my status to work for them.

"Thank you for reading the jobs to me  Marlene would you happen to know where the gardener job is? And how to get there?"

I heard her sharp intake of breath, that wouldn't have been heard by someone that didn't have sensitive hearing.

"Dear, are you sure you would like to go for that job?" She asked softly.

"Yes, I'm quiet good at gardening and I feel that I shell be able to do the job." I replied with a happy smile.

"Fred shell take you to the place, but please be careful as it is the home of Nixon Raynerson, his not the most friendliest person to be around." Marlene replied, before leaving.

I hope I did not upset her because that wasn't my intention. Plus I have dealt with not so friendly people for most of my life.

Shrugging I carefully made my way back to my room, feeling worried and unsure from what Marlene had said.

She seemed so worried about something, maybe it was my safety?

Shacking away my nerves and pushing those thoughts to the back of my mind, I need this job. I just hope that he will hirer me.

Making my way over to were to where I hear Fred breathing. I put my hand on his forward in a way of letting him know to lead the way.

We walked in silence for a while each of us lost in our own thoughts.

"Here we are sweet pea, there are around six to ten steps that lead to his front door, I won't be far. " Fred said while giving my arm a pat before walking away.

Taking a deep breath I made my way to the front door using my cane to let me know when there was a step.

Reaching my hand up I used what feels like a giant steel handle to knock on the door.

I need to be confident not shy or quiet. So basically I need to be what I am not when I meet strangers.

I think it has a little bit to do with the vibes that I was getting off both Fred and Marlene before I got here.

Hearing heavy foot steps coming to the door. I took one last deep breath to compose myself.

"What do you want?!" A deep rough voice asked. I jumped a little at the harshness I heard in it.

"Excuse me sir, I am here about the gardening job" I replied in a voice I hope sounds more confident then I am feeling.

I could feel his eyes on me, and I weird tingly feeling. I have never felt someone's eyes on me in this manner.

I could basically feel the judgement coming off him in waves. And for some reason that upset me.

Why though I have no clue because I have never much cared about what people think of me especially when they don't know me.

" I can't hire someone who is inadequate" he snapped before I heard the door slam.

How dare he! I have done nothing wrong. Plus why does it feel like I have been slapped in the face.

I have something to say to him. Once I again I used the door knocker. This time with much more force then needed.

I heard the door open, then when he realised it was me he shrugged in what sounded like annoyance.

"Why are you still here?!" He spat.

"I find it very in polite to slam the door in someone's face after insulting them about something that is not there fault."  I said before continuing. "It's not my fault that I am blind, for I do not need my eyesight to know that you are conceited. Have a nice day sir." I retorted with one of my brightest smiles.

I am not going to let him know how much that one word he said to me upset me.

I have never been ashamed of being blind but right this second I am close to losing my happiness of who I am.

Not giving him the chance to reply I made my way down the steps, trying to get away from him as fast as possible without hurting myself.

I am really clumsy, especially in places I don't know. Making my way over to where I heard Fred's voice.

I was really counting on that job, I am not sure what I am going to do. I have enough money left to pay for a couple more nights at the hotel but other then that I have nothing.

Shrugging in disappointment, put my hand once again on Fred's four arm while he lead the way back to the hotel.

This time I made sure to count my steps. So I can try and remember where everything is in future.

"How did it go sweet pea?" Fred asked while we made our way into the hotel.

I was about to reply but the door slamming open and someone made me tumble over.

Landing on my butt I couldn't help but yelp out in shock and pain. I felt a someone pulling me up by my arm gently and I released it was Fred.

"What do you think you were doing barging in here and knocking a lady over?!" Fred demanded in a sharp voice.

"I'm sorry sir, I come for the Raynerson residence and have a letter here for her." I realised the voice belonged to a young boy.

Holding out my hand for the letter. I felt it being gently put in my hand. Giving him a smile because I couldn't help but feel the nervous vibes coming off the poor boy.

"Thank you sir." I gestured with the letter.

"Your welcome mam and I'm sorry for knocking you over please forgive me." He replied shyly.

"That's ok, have a nice day."

I walked away into the kitchen, maybe Marlene could read the letter to me?

I can here her preparing lunch, which smells lovely.

"Excuse me Marlene I was wondering if you could please read me this letter?" What I get in return was a yelp.

"Sorry I didn't me to scare you" I said with a sorry smile.

"That's fine dear and of course I'll read it too you." I shrugged in relief.

Handing her the letter I waited for her to open it.

"Dear girl with the wild curly hair,

You have got your self a trial for the job, you are to meet me at my house at ten am not later, to discuss the details.

From Nixon Raynerson." Marlene finish reading.

I got the job! Even if it's only for a trail, jumping for joy. Things are starting to look a little bit better, I thought before a huge smile came across my face.
