S1E1: Wednesday's Child is Full of Woe

· · ─────── ·✞· ─────── · ·

Inside Weathervane, Tyler was at the counter having trouble with the espresso machine while Esmarie tried to use her phone to translate the instructions without much success. Tyler flinched and Esmarie coughed as the machine spewed out smoke, once it had cleared, Wednesday was standing in front of the counter, staring at them. "Holy crap!" Tyler exclaimed, startled while Esmarie furrowed her brows and checked the time, her session didn't start for another twenty minutes which meant that Wednesday had escaped. "Do you make a habit of scaring the hell out of people?" Tyler questioned her. "It's more of a hobby," Wednesday replied. "I can believe that," Esmarie said as she picked up her milkshake and sipped the straw.

"You got to Nevermore with Marie. Didn't realise they changed the uniform," Tyler expressed before looking at the blonde with soft eyes, Wednesday recognised the look in the boys' eyes and felt a pit form in her stomach along with the strange need to pull Esmarie closer to her but she ignored it. "I need a quad over ice. It's an emergency," Wednesday ordered however, Tyler simply stared at her while Esmarie happily sipped her milkshake, giggling herself when she blew into the shake creating bubbles. "It's four shots of espresso," Wednesday told him. "Yeah, I... I know what a quad is, but, spoiler alert, the espresso machine's having a seizure, so all we have is drip," Tyler replied to her motioning to the espresso machine.

"But drip is for people who hate themselves and know their lives have no real purpose or meaning," Wednesday complained causing a man who had been pouring the drip to awkwardly put the pot down and walk away, Esmarie pouting adorably as she felt bad for the man; the sight was kind of cute to Wednesday. "What's wrong with your machine?" Wednesday asked Tyler causing Esmarie to reply, "We have no idea. One moment is was fine and then the next, it went boom." Tyler and Wednesday watched Esmarie in amusement, she was sitting on the back counter and had used her hands to exaggerate the machine "blowing up" and spoke with a soft child-like tone that made both Tyler and Wednesday smile.

"Basically, it's a temperamental beast with a mind of its own," Tyler said as Esmarie picked up her milkshake to finish it, her eyes turned away from the two and focused on the cars driving by outside. "And it doesn't help that the instructions are in Italian," Tyler added with a defeated sigh. Wednesday walked to the other side of the counter and took the instructions from where Esmarie had placed them, she stood by the blonde as she read it. "I need a tri-wing screwdriver and a four-millimetre Allen wrench," Wednesday told Tyler. "Wait, you read Italian?" Esmarie asked softly, she tilted her head with interest; the action reminded Wednesday of a curious puppy. "Of course. It's the native tongue of Machiavelli," Wednesday replied to her.

"Here's the deal. I'm going to fix your coffee machine, then you're going to make my coffee and call a taxi," Wednesday told Tyler. "Uh, no taxis in Jericho. Try Uber?" Tyler replied to her. "I don't have a phone. I refuse to be a slave to technology," Wednesday expressed making Esmarie smile slightly. "Then you're out of luck," Tyler told her as she worked on fixing the espresso machine. "Where are you going anyway?" Esmarie asked, she was intrigued. "That's on a need-to-know basis," Wednesday replied to her before looking at Tyler, "What about trains?" Tyler sighed, "Nearest station is Burlington. It's half an hour away."

"You have a valve issue. I've seen it before," Wednesday informed Tyler. "Where? You have one of these monsters at home?" Tyler questioned her. "Steam-powered guillotine. I built it when I was ten. I wanted to decapitate my dolls more efficiently," Wednesday answered him making Esmarie look over with wide eyes, she hummed to herself before turning back to her phone to respond to Xavier's message. "Sure. Grim Reaper Barbie, makes perfect sense," Tyler expressed as he looked over at Esmarie noticing the smile on her face, "Who are you messaging?" Esmarie looked up to see that even Wednesday was looking at her, "It's Xavier. He's just checking in on me."

Wednesday felt her stomach churn once again however, it worsened upon seeing the slight glare on Tyler's face; it seemed he didn't like the blonde's friendship with Xavier. Wednesday finished up fixing the espresso machine causing Tyler to smile, "Wow. Thanks. I never met a Nevermore kid who got their hands dirty. Aside from Marie, of course," Tyler expressed receiving a small smile from Esmarie. Wednesday noticed how the blonde seemed more laid back outside of the school, she couldn't understand why the blonde seemed to be so comfortable around normies rather than others who share a 'freak' lifestyle with her.

"I'm Tyler, by the way. I didn't catch your name... or is that on a need-to-know basis too?" Tyler asked Wednesday. "Wednesday," She replied to him. "Tell you what, Wednesday. To show my appreciation, how about I drive you to Burlington?" Tyler offered. "Perfect. Put that quad in a to-go cup," Wednesday replied to him, Esmarie frowned slightly, she'd miss Wednesday's unique yet kooky presence. "Uh, but I don't get off for another hour," Tyler informed her. "I'll sweeten the pot," Wednesday pulled out twenty dollars. "Twenty whole dollars... tempting, but no," Tyler shook his head. "I'll make it forty," Wednesday upped the payment.

"Uh... listen, Wednesday, one fun fact about me... I can't be bought, so either wait, or find someone else to drive you," Tyler informed Wednesday who realised she'd have to make do with what she could get. Wednesday made her way over to a booth and sat down, her hands interlocked resting on the table as she stared outside. Tyler and Esmarie shared a look before Tyler got to work on making Wednesday's drink, allowing Esmarie to be the one to take it over having finished her milkshake. "Your drink, ma'am," Esmarie spoke as she placed the cup in front of Wednesday, the stoic girl looked up at Esmarie with a blank stare that made Esmarie's smile falter slightly.

Esmarie turned to walk away assuming that Wednesday did not wish for company but instead, the stoic Addams girl reached out and grabbed Esmarie's wrist to stop her. A strange sensation burned through both girls, the feeling held no pain whatsoever but they were startled apart due to it. "Sit with me," Wednesday instructed Esmarie, motioning towards the seat across from her and Esmarie followed the instruction. "Why are you so adamant to escape?" Esmarie asked breaking the silence that had been present. "Like I've said, to stop my parents' obvious plan to turn me into themselves," Wednesday answered her. "Seems to me that your parents really care about you," Esmarie said with a shrug, that's what she picked up on.

"They don't. They care for what they want me to be," Wednesday snapped but Esmarie simply began fiddling with the rings on her fingers. "At least your parents want you to be something..." Esmarie muttered but Wednesday heard it. "What about your parents?" Wednesday asked, her own curiosity getting the better of her; even if curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back. "You know, Weems won't stop looking. She's better than you think," Esmarie warned in hopes to change the subject, Wednesday obviously picked up on that but didn't push knowing she wouldn't want someone to push her.

"Are you underestimating my skills, Esmarie?" Wednesday asked in a low tone that sounded like a purr to Esmarie, a tone she wanted to hear again. "Perhaps I am," Esmarie teased making Wednesday smirk, neither of them noticing the new faces walking into the diner. "You shouldn't underestimate me, Esmarie. I'm capable of many, many things," Wednesday replied with that same purr-like tone. "Don't say it if you can't prove it," Esmarie told Wednesday in her own low tone, the two girls had leaned forward with challenge in their eyes and a strange feeling within their hearts; they had been so in the moment that Esmarie failed to notice the glare on Tyler's face seeing how close the two girls became.

"Hey, boys, check it out," A teenager spoke as he looked over towards the two girls sitting in the booth adorning Nevermore uniforms. "Who's that with Blondie?" Another teenager questioned with a smirk. "Bro... come on," The last one spoke before the three of them approached the two girls. "What's a Nevermore freak doing out in the wild?" The first boy spoke startling the two girls apart, Esmarie shrunk into the seat seeing who it was. "Hello again, Blondie," The second boy spoke with a devious smirk on his face, leaning down towards her. "This is our booth," He added while Esmarie moved away from him, the sight made Wednesday uneasy and annoyed with the boys who clearly made her companion uncomfortable.

"Why are you dressed like religious fanatics?" Wednesday questioned to pull their attention on her rather than Esmarie. "We're Pilgrims," The third boy corrected. "Potato, po-tah-to," Wednesday taunted back. "We work at Pilgrim World," The first boy informed her as he slapped a flyer onto the table. "It takes a special kind of stupid to devote an entire theme park to zealots responsible for mass genocide," Wednesday said as she looked at the flyer, her words upsetting the boys. "My dad owns Pilgrim World. Who you calling stupid?" The first boy questioned angrily. "If the buckled shoe fits," Wednesday retorted.

"Guys, back off," Tyler spoke up knowing that these boys made Esmarie uncomfortable. "Stay out of this, Galpin," The second boy spoke with a harsh tone. "Yes, stay out of this," Wednesday added towards Tyler before turning back to the three boys in front of her. "So tell me, freak... you ever been with a normie?" The third boy asked her with a smirk. "I've never found one that could handle me," Wednesday replied, the comment made Esmarie bite her bottom lip subconsciously as those words bounced through her head only to be startled by Wednesday's next words, "Seems to me that Blondie could though." The three boys had been taken aback by the comment while Esmarie flushed pink, Wednesday smirked at her.

"Boo!" Wednesday suddenly spoke startling the boys causing a fight to break out. The second boy had focused on grabbing Esmarie while the other two boys focused on Wednesday, the blonde kicked the second boy away from her and quickly climbed over the booth into the next one trying to escape the boy; she couldn't get into a fight out of fear of losing control and hurting someone again. Wednesday had managed to block the other two boys' hits, but took notice of Esmarie's predicament which sparked a new anger through her. When the second boy tried to grab Esmarie again, she pulled her arm back but punching him in the face causing him to stumble back allowing her to get away from him.

Wednesday dodged a punch from the third boy resulting in him punching the first boy in the face, Wednesday then grabbed the boy and cracked his fingers, throwing him into the first boy sending them to the floor. She pulled Esmarie to stand behind her as the second boy stepped forward with a bloody nose from Esmarie's hit, "I'll get you sooner or later, Blondie." Wednesday glared menacingly at the boy before kneeing him in the stomach, elbowing him in the back leaving him to fall to the fall groaning in pain alongside his friends. Wednesday and Esmarie moved away from the boys to stand with Tyler who checked on Esmarie noticing that her knuckles where already beginning to bruise.

"So where'd you learn those Kung Fu moves?" Tyler asked Wednesday having witnessed her entire fight while Esmarie had missed most of it dealing with the boy she was fighting. "My uncle taught me. He spent five years in a Tibetan Monastery," Wednesday answered him as she grabbed Esmarie's hand, looking at the bruising herself before noticing the light bruise appearing around her wrist that had been caused by the boy grabbing her wrist. "Was he a monk?" Esmarie asked intrigued. "Prisoner," Wednesday responded softly, her fingers brushing over the bruise as the door opened to reveal the Sheriff who spotted the boys in pain on the floor.

Tyler held out an ice pack to Esmarie but the blonde tried to refuse it only for Wednesday to take the ice pack and apply it to the blonde's knuckles. "Dad!" Tyler exclaimed finally noticing his fathers presence. "Tyler, the hell's going on in here?" Sheriff Galpin questioned his son as Esmarie watched Wednesday, she was so delicate with the way she held the blonde's hand and it was making her heart race. "They were harassing a customer, and she put them in their place," Tyler motioned to Esmarie and then to Wednesday. "This little thing took down three boys?" Sheriff Galpin asked astonished, "Did you help her?"

"Dad, I swear, I wasn't involved," Tyler assured his father. "They were making me uncomfortable again, Sheriff," Esmarie spoke softly, her head lowered in shame for causing yet another scene that could look bad on Nevermore. "Which one of them did that?" Sheriff Galpin asked as he pointed at the bruise on her wrist, the blonde sighed before motioning towards the second boy making the Sheriff glare at him; he'd be talking to the boy and his parents for putting his hands on a girl, Nevermore or not. The door opened again and this time, Principal Weems had stepped into the diner. "Apologies, Sheriff. This one slipped away from me," Principal Weems spoke, turning to her two students.

"Come on, Miss Addams, Miss King, time to go," Principal Weems instructed them, Esmarie internally cheered knowing she wouldn't be attending her session today; she handed Tyler the ice pack and let Wednesday lead her over to their Principal. "Wait a minute, hang on," Sheriff Galpin spoke up, "You're an Addams? Don't tell me Gomez Addams is your father? That man belongs behind bars for murder. Guessin' the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I'm gonna keep my eye on you." Esmarie looked between them as Wednesday stared blankly at the Sheriff, Principal Weems spoke up, "Okay."

· · ─────── ·✞· ─────── · ·

"Your first day and you're already on Sheriff Galpin's radar. Wish I could say I was surprised," Principal Weems expressed to Wednesday as they drove back to Nevermore. "What did he mean about my father?" Wednesday questioned the woman. "I have no idea but a word of advice. Stop making enemies and start making a few friends. You're going to need them," Principal Weems told Wednesday, the girl looking in the rearview mirror at Esmarie who was looking out the window with a relaxed expression on her face; perhaps a friend couldn't hurt especially one as useful as Esmarie King. "Looks like an accident," Principal Weems noticed gaining the two teenagers attention and turning it to the scene.

As stated, two cars were stopped on the road, crashed into each other. It was the crash that Wednesday had a vision about earlier that day after bumping into the farmer. "I hope both drivers are okay," Esmarie spoke softly with a slight frown. "He's dead. Broke his neck," Wednesday stated blandly causing Esmarie to look at her. "How can you tell from this angle?" Principal Weems asked the girl but she didn't respond. However, as Wednesday had said, the driver was indeed dead with a broken neck. Esmarie shrunk back in her seat with a sad pout while Wednesday reached into her shirt and fiddled with the necklace her mother gave her.

Rosemary Speaks

Protective/Soft Wednesday? Only for Esmarie.
Plus, some flirty tension between them.

I want to stay true to Wednesday's character but I am mixing in more of the Addams' DNA and family/love is a major part of their lives; as seen in the movies, so expect the trope of "I hate everybody but you" because that's Wednesday towards Esmarie, 100% <3

Also, Esmarie has moments that seem very child-like/childish, but there will be an eventual explanation; for now, enjoy her adorable ways!
