"Duppy Dat"

Javier

I get a call as I exit the gates of Kalíanna's gated community. I saw to it that she got home safe even though I had something to handle, simply becuase I can't stand the thought of anything happening to her.

I answer the call and Trap's voice sounds through the phone.

"Everything ready eno boss." He knew better than to discuss details over the phone. "Mad." I respond, ending the call in the same breath. I understood exactly what he meant.

The situation that happened mere minutes ago lingered on my mind, but I knew I would have to address it another time.

Right now? I had much bigger fish to fry.

If there is anything I've learnt over the years, it's that you simply don't allow people to cross you, dem wi' tek yuh fi weak fence.

When yuh mek a name fi yuhself it's one thing, but when people try be little you is another.

Anybody wah underestimate Javi 'cause him young? Fool dat.

I give the elders their respect, where it is due. After all a some a dem teach mi eh game, mek mi can run it off now. But yuh see when dem try bait up eh ting, and try gwan like dem wah fuck wid mi tings dem. . .a dat mi cya tek.

Mi nah give nuh pussyole nuh fawud off a my goods dem.

Dem affi get dem own.

'Cause guess wah? Mi never beg nuh fawud.

So yuh see when mi hear seh, Mr. Sanchez, a lock off mi how much key a cocaine weh mi ave pon eh wharf and feel mi just go let eh go, just suh-a deh suh him fuck up.

Like him nuh know how much bloodclaat money mi pay fi deh one shipment deh.

Money fi decades dat.

When mi call him eh first time and ask him 'bout eh, he said he would, "look into it." Mi play fool fi ketch wise, because mi did want see how long him did go tek fi look into the matter.

After a few hours passed and it was beyond nightfall, mi know mi did affi go give him a link.

By the hook or by the crook, mi a tek off deh container deh off a eh harbour.

And God help him if eh nuh deh over deh.

I get to the location where we agreed to meet, everyone was sporting masks and black from head to toe. I nod in satisfaction as I exit my vehicle. I knew that I would have to change it to another. Cya go pon eh crime wid mi everyday vehicle. . .a mi baby dat.

I excuse myself to give Kalíanna a call because mi know how she stay. "Yo, mi reach home." I say the moment she picks up the phone. "Alright, good night. . .be safe." Sleep is evident in her tone, I woke her up.

I laugh to myself at how determine she is about ensuring that I called her.

"Good night, always." I respond before ending the call.

A hint of guilt washes over me knowing that I was about to put myself in harms way.

I watch as everybody stops what they're doing to hear what I have to say.

I break down exactly how I wanted it to be carried out, if there was anything at all that you knew about me-whilst working with or along side me-it is that I'm precise.

I dot all 'i's and cross all 't's.

"Mi nah call, call nobody phone unnecessarily. Uno know how technology fuck up. Look out a uno eye dem fi a signal from mi or Trap. Eh car dem a front ensure seh everything gov' and mek wi' know sed way. Everybody a back a mainly fi look out."

When I was sure everyone understood their role in this operation. It was time for us to leave.

I got into a darkly tinted SUV, that sported black on the outside and an equally dark interior.

I sit in the front seat of the vehicle as I watch as the others drive ahead, while some stayed behind the car I was in. I light the spliff that sits between my lips, before taking a long draw.

We are all headed in the direction of Freeport.

I give Mr. Sanchez a call when the car comes to halt outside the docks.

"Hello, Javier, I was still-" I cut off his ramble. "Mek yuh people dem know seh dem fi fly eh gate." He pauses before answering and I exhale the smoke from my mouth, trying my best to contain my anger.

"What do you mean?" He questions with his thick Hispanic accent.

I laugh before rendering a response of my own.

"Mi out a wharf and mi a go fi mi container." I watch as the truck I had Trap call, pull up outside where we were also waiting. He signals towards the large vehicle and I nod letting him know that I saw it.

"Hope yuh nuh ave problem with that."

"None at all, Mr. Santos."

Eh man sound shakey yuh fuck.

I look up seeing that the gates were now open and I roll down my window signaling to the others to reverse to make way for the truck to head inside first.

The car at the front of the line of vehicles slows down at the security post and the security seemingly closed the gates on him again after the trailer entered.

Trap gets a call and he answers the phone putting it on speaker. "Wah deh happen?" I ask, impatiently. "Him seh him never get word seh a so much vehicle fi come in. Yah go call, Mr. Sanchez?" Drag questions and Trap laughs at the question knowing me too well.

"Call who?" Trap laughs and I let out a laugh of my own.

"Duppy dat." I order, and Trap ends the call.

Almost immediately gunshots ring through the air and I nod my head in satisfaction.

The line of vehicles start moving again and I'm content with how this is playing out.

"Mek dem know seh ano everybody fi come in." I tell Trap and he nods before relaying the message.

I exit the vehicle and I watch as few of the men have already handled the remaining security guards.

I raise my hand fanning it back and forth to let the other vehicles know that they can now enter the vicinity.

I sit on the bonnet of the car I came in as I watch as they tear apart the Freeport Harbour looking for my container.

They set fire to anything that wasn't mine and I wasn't even worried who they belonged to, all of this could have been avoided.

Any damage was on his own hands.

I watch as they load my container onto the trailer and I nod to Trap before rounding the car and getting into to driver's seat.

I wanted to be the one to lead the container back to the safe house.

I look down at my phone on my lap ringing as Kalíanna's name flash across the screen. I was reluctant about answering, but the thought of there being something wrong crossed my mind.

Besides, if push comes to shove, this would be a great alibi so I decided to pick up.

"Yuh gov'?" I ask as I answer the phone.

"Where are you?" She questions, groggily.

"At home, why yuh ask?" I lie. My eyes are still trained on the road as I navigate the streets of Monetgo Bay.

"I just saw something on the news and I wanted to make sure you were ok."

That was fast.

The faint voice of the newscaster could be heard through the phone.

"Turn eh up mek mi hear."

"The Freeport Harbour was reportedly just ransacked by a large group of masked men, security guards were shot and killed. Firefighters are now on the scene as they work incessantly to put out the large and rapidly spreading fire set by the very perpetrators. The police department sends their sincere apologies to those who had anything of value on these docks. The head of police force for the St. James division, reassures us that they will stop at nothing to catch those responsible. He also said that, they will involve The Major Organized Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, formally known as MOCA, if needs be. . ."
