Wyatt
It's been a whole 24 hours since I've seen Katie.
We were both busy Saturday. Now it's Sunday and I'm staring at a text from her.
Kate: Come over
Me: Okay
Me: now?
I'm trying to figure out what she means.
I walk out the front door and see my mom laying in a lawn chair in shorts and a tank top.
"Ma, what are you doing?" I ask while squinting my eyes because of the sun.
"Getting what little sun we have left before the dreadful winter comes."
"Okay. I'm going to Katie's." I tell my mom.
She smiles. "Okay, have fun."
I pull into Katie's driveway and see there are five cars in her driveway.
I walk to the front door and I notice all the blinds are closed. I ring the doorbell.
Katie swings the door open and pulls me into a very dark house.
This is it. I'm going to die, I think.
She drags me down the hall and behind a couch in the living room.
"Kate, what the hell is going on?" I whisper yell.
Katie grins and shoves a Nerf gun into my hands.
"Shh, you're now part of a Nerf gunfight."
Oh.
"What?" I ask confused.
Katie sighs. "You're my teammate now. Remember how I said my family still had Nerf gun fights?"
"Yeah."
"Well, we're in the middle of one now, and you're my new teammate since Derek double-crossed me."
I just nod my head very slowly. "What are the rules?"
"Um? Don't get shot. If you do you're out. The last person or team left wins and gets free ice cream."
I grin. "Okay. Who's teamed up with who?"
"It started with me and Derek, Izzy and Ava, and Tyler with my dad. Now Ava is out and Derek double-crossed me and is with Izzy."
I bite my tongue to keep from laughing. It was cute how serious Katie is.
"So the goal is to not get shot and make it to the end of the game?"
Kate grins, "Yep!"
We stay huddled behind the couch for a while till I hear the floor squeak.
I tap Katie and point over the couch.
We sit up to look over the edge.
I see a figure hiding against the wall in the living room; waiting for someone to walk in.
"I think it's Tyler," I whisper Katie nods and sits up higher.
She aims her Nerf gun, shoots, and hits whoever it is four times.
"Shit!" A deep voice yells.
Katie stands up and I peek over the edge to see who it is.
"Gracie did you seriously just shoot your partner?"
Katie rolls her eyes. "Cut the crap, I know you doubled crossed me for Izzy.
Derek's face turns white and I stand up.
"Well, that's a plot twist I didn't see. Normally Tyler and her team up," Derek says frowning.
"After last the last game, Lochner can go to hell." Katie snaps.
We walk over to Derek and take his supplies.
"Alright, you know the drill, start walking," Katie orders.
I give Katie a confused look. "Once you get shot you have to sit outside and wait," She explains.
"Izzy's outside isn't she?" Katie asks but it sounds more like a statement.
Derek shakes his head. "I'm not telling you a damn thing."
"Alright, Derek you're going to open the sliding door and we're going to use you as a shield."
Katie stands behind Derek and I crouch behind him slightly since he's only a little bit taller than me.
Derek opens the door and we follow behind him.
"Did you get them!" Izzy yells standing up from behind a bush.
Katie and I lean toward the side of Derek and start shooting at Izzy.
"Crap!" She yells as she dives behind a bush. Derek moves and Izzy starts shooting at Katie and I.
We both fall to the ground and roll behind a chair.
"Derek what happened to our plan!" Izzy yells from behind a bush. Derek walks towards Ava and sits down in a chair beside her.
"I was waiting in the living room as you said but they were already in there and they shot me," Derek explains.
"Hey, Ava how are you?" Derek asks.
"I have nothing to say to you. Izzy betrayed me and you shot me," Ava snaps.
Katie giggles. "In the future never team up with Derek or Izzy they will always double-cross you and team up with each other."
"Then why did you pair up with Derek?" Ava asks.
Katie grins her teasing grin. "Because I like to keep the game interesting and I knew Izzy and Derek would never start together."
"Let me guess Tyler is behind there with you isn't he?" Izzy deadpans still behind the bush.
Let me explain what's going on. Katie and I are hiding behind a chair, and Izzy is still behind a bush. Derek and Ava are sitting on chairs in the middle of the yard.
They are talking back and forth from their hiding spots.
"Lochner can rot in hell for all I care!" Katie snaps.
"Then who's with you?"
"I know Mike would never double-cross his teammate, "Izzy says.
"Wyatt!" Katie yells grinning.
"Well, that's an unexpected plot twist," Izzy says.
I laugh to the point tears are coming out of my eyes.
"Kate, what happened with Tyler?"
Katie scowls. "Halfway through the last game we called a truce and teamed up. We won because everyone was out. But Tyler shot me so he would be the only winner. It was the closest I've ever been to winning."
I smile.
"Well, I'm going to make sure we win," I say softly.
We wait behind the chair for a while till we hear a faint click of a gate. I tap Katie and we watch Mike creep toward Izzy's bush.
I point my Nerf gun at him. Katie places her hand on it and mouths, "Wait."
We watch him shoot at Izzy from the side.
"Ahh crap!" Izzy yells frustrated. She stands up and points towards us, but before Mike can turn around Katie and I shoot him.
"Well, shit!" Mike mumbles. Katie grins and we stand up.
"I'm very disappointed in you Katie and Wyatt I expected better from you," Mike says sitting down with Derek, Ava, and Izzy.
Katie puts more foam bullets into her gun. "Sorry, Dad games a game."
Mike smiles. "Before you even ask it, I'm not telling you where Ty is."
Katie sighs and sits down on the ground. "Why not?" She whines in a dramatic voice.
"Because that's cheating." Izzy deadpans.
"Dad you know Tyler would sell you out in a heartbeat," Katie says grinning.
"I know, but I'm not," Mike responds simply.
"Where is Tyler?" Katie asks anyway. I give her a confused look.
"I'm not telling you, Katie," Mike says sternly.
"You don't have to. When I asked you your eyes flicked to the gate; giving it away." Katie states smugly.
I give Kate a huge smile.
Mike smiles softly. "You really are your mother's daughter."
I follow Katie to the gate leading to their front yard. "Stay down and quiet. I don't know for sure where he is," Katie informs me.
We creep around the side of their house and turn the corner to their front yard. We see Tyler standing there with his gun pointed at us.
"Well look how the tables have turned," Tyler says smugly. We point our guns at him.
"Dad's out Lochner you can put the gun down."
Tyler's finger wraps around the trigger and I push Katie out of the way and the foam bullet hits my stomach. Katie shoots Tyler in the chest three times.
"What the crap, Wyatt!" Tyler yells. I ignore him and look to see Katie smirking from ear to ear. She jumps into my arms and I hug her tight.
"We won!" Katie yells.
"Technically you just won I shot Wyatt," Tyler says coldly.
"Thank you, Just Wyatt," Katie says softly.
I stare into Katie's green eyes. "I would sacrifice myself anytime for you baby."
"Are y'all done yet I want Icecream!" Derek yells and we see Clair and everyone else walk over.
"I shot Wyatt then Katie shot me," Tyler says frowning.
"So I guess that means Katie gets free Icecream," Clair says smiling.
"Alright, we leave in five minutes so chop-chop," Mike says sternly.
We all run inside, Katie runs upstairs and I help the guys put all the stuff away.
