"Been awhile since we went to a crime scene that Connor and Hank wouldn't be at too." You murmured over the quiet music that was playing in your car. "Yes it has been, it is odd to think about how much has happened since then." Nines said he was the one giving your directions whenever needed.
"Jesus... yeah a lot has happened since that day..." You mumbled while reminiscing that exact day.
"Turn left," Nines directed so you did exactly that and turned left, "now just keep driving straight for awhile."
Glancing over at Nines you couldn't help but notice that for once he wasn't looking out the window having a villain arc, instead he was staring towards the speakers in your car that were playing the music. Looking back to the road you came up to a light that was turning red, instantly breaking.
"So triple homicide..." You mumbled hating the silence between you and Nines.
"Would you like to go out somewhere this evening?" Nines asked out of the blue, his head turning to look at you his eyes boring into yours. "I apologise I did not mean to be rude and ignore your statement."
"You wanna go out? Again?" You questioned Nines who nodded immediately, then tilted his head at you. "Perhaps we should avoid alcohol this time, though." Nines stated his eyes going wide for a moment like he was remembering something. "The light is going green."
Looking back to the road you start driving once more. "Maybe we should wait and see how the rest of the day goes... if I'm too tired I probably won't want to go out." You told him putting a half smile on your lips.
"Of course, I would dislike for you to become more tired. If you choose not to go out we could always do the same as last night." Nines said before going quiet once more, it made you happy that Nines seemed to want to spend time with you. Maybe he actually enjoyed your company nowadays.
After another ten minutes you arrived at the address of the triple homicide, it was a small bar like one Hank would probably like. Cutting the engine off you turned to look at Nines, he was already looking your way.
"You sure this is the place?"
"Yes, I am certain." Nines replied he unbuckled his seatbelt and turned away opening his door to get out. You just shrugged and did the same as him.
The two of you passed through the Do Not Cross holographic tape heading straight for the door, pushing it open you were instantly met people bustling around the bar.
"Detective L/N! Thanks for coming to help us." One of your colleagues called out as they approached you, one of the bodies was already in your sights. It was obviously a human man his body was slumped over the bar. "Happy to help where it's needed." You told them then gestured your hand out towards the body. "Where are the other two bodies?"
"Over there, not really sure if they knew one another. But we got multiple calls about a shooting, these three unfortunately turned up dead." Your colleague explained as they pointed over to one of the booths, two more bodies were there. One was laid on the floor just by the booth and the other was laid across the seat the head hanging over the side. "People are questioning the owner as we speak, said she had no idea what the hell was going on. Usually a peaceful neighbourhood."
"Were they all shot?" You questioned seeing Nines move over to the body slumped over the bar. "Yeah all three of them, don't know if it was just someone who felt like shooting people today or whether it was planned." Your colleague answered giving them an appreciative nod you step over towards Nines, his LED was flashing yellow indicating that he was scanning the body.
"He has two bullet wounds, one in his abdomen and one in the chest. The one in the chest is what killed him, it pierced his lung so he drowned in his own blood." Nines informed you and you let out a long breath.
"Poor guy..." You mumbled moving around Nines and crouching down to see the bullet wound that hit him in the chest. "What a shit way to die..."
"It certainly would have been unpleasant." Nines said as you stood back up, Nines dipped his fingers into some of the blood on the countertop of the bar then raised his fingers to his mouth and licked some of the blood off. "I really thought that would forever bother me... but I think I'm completely used to it now." You admitted while his LED flashed yellow for several seconds.
"I am glad it no longer bothers you, also he has been dead for one hour and eleven minutes. I have already figured out where the shooter was stood when they shot him." Nines informed you, you couldn't help your eyes widening in shock that he'd already figured that out. Nines moved so he was beside you then took three steps to the right and two steps back and held his arm out. "The shooter was stood here, at this angle it has the trajectory to pierce the lung the way it did."
"Have I ever told you how amazing I actually think you are?" You questioned which was rhetorical but you knew Nines would answer anyway. "No I don't believe you have, it is not me. CyberLife designed me this way." Nines muttered while slowly lowering his arm to his side.
"Take the compliment, Nines, " you gave him a sweet smile, "because I really do think you're amazing."
"T-Th-Thank you, Y/N." Nines stuttered shaking his head slightly, before then returning the smile you had given him. "Now come on back to impressing me you go." You ordered with a small laugh, which only deepened Nines's smile.
"Of course."
Nines swivelled his body keeping his feet in the exact same position, then looked towards the booth. "Could we possibly put an evidence marker here?" Nines asked you his chin hooking over his shoulder to look at you. "Yeah one sec." You replied before moving over and grabbing an evidence marker, you then move over to where Nines was stood.
"Just place it in between my feet, please." Nines requested, humming in response you crouch down behind Nines and place the evidence marker between his feet. "Done." You told him and Nines instantly stepped forwards and moved towards the booth.
You couldn't see his LED anymore but you knew for a fact he was scanning the body laid on the chair of the booth, he then shifted his body to face the body on the floor beside the booth.
"The body sat laid in the booth has a singular bullet wound to the heart, but this body one the floor has three bullet wounds. One that grazed the waist which was probably the first shot, then one to the leg which possibly could have been the second shot and finally the last bullet entered the stomach which was the one that killed this man. However I believe the shot to the stomach was from a closer range than the other shots." Nines explained pointing to every single thing he had just mentioned to you. "Well after being shot in the leg I'm sure he was less mobile so getting closer to him would have been a lot easier." You mumbled as Nines nodded an impressed look on his face.
"Exactly, I am not sure if they were all targets or something else I will need to continue my search before I give you any possible reasoning or suspect." Nines told you then looked down to the blood still on his fingers before looking at the pools of blood coming from the two other bodies.
"Would you like something to clean your fingers with?" You asked after seeing the puzzled look on his face.
"I would greatly appreciate that, yes." Nines breathed out averting his eyes from yours, letting a small chuckle escape from your mouth you move to find a napkin or something similar. Going behind the bar you find a napkin and move back towards Nines, the moment you approached he held his fingers that had blood on them out.
It was obvious to you that he wanted you to hand it to him, but you had other ideas. Instead you grabbed onto his wrist and wiped the blood from his fingertips, at your actions Nines's mouth dropped open the slightest bit.
"I could have... I mean thank you." Nines stammered his LED flashing red the whole time, you couldn't help the smile that grew on your face. "You're welcome, Nines." You said pulling the napkin away from his hand, then loosened your grip on his wrist before fully letting go. "I'll keep ahold of it, so you can use it again."
"I- yes thank you, I appreciate it." Nines mumbled before turning back to the bodies, he then dipped the two fingers you had just cleaned into some more blood. Before he raised them to his mouth he side glanced you thinking you wouldn't notice. Looking away from you he then lifted his fingers to his mouth and licked some off. 'If I didn't know him I'd say he was just embarrassed.' You thought to yourself biting down onto your bottom lip, softly.
"The man laying at the booth has been dead for one hour and fifteen minutes." Nines informed you which made you start thinking about who was possibly attacked first. "So he was attacked first because he's been dead longer." You suggested but Nines shook his head, before then frowning.
"It is possible of course, but I think the man at the bar was attacked first. He drowned in his own blood which means it would have taken him longer to die." Nines explained you thought about his reasoning and nodded in agreement. "You're more likely to be right than I am." You mumbled holding the napkin out to Nines so he could wipe his fingers himself this time.
But when he turned to you he didn't attempt to take the napkin from you, instead he held his fingers out flat to you like he was waiting for you to clean them off for him again. So you grabbed onto his wrist once more and cleaned his fingers off again.
"Thank you, Y/N." Nines said with a small smirk on his face.
With that you let go of his wrist as he turned back around to sample blood from the last body, he crouched down beside the body on the floor and repeated the actions from before. Once he was done he stood back up while his LED flashed yellow.
"He has been dead for one hour and nine minutes." Nines told you as he pointed down at the body, his eyebrows creased together so you stepped towards him.
"You okay, Nines?" You questioned resting a hand onto his forearm.
"Yes I am fine... it is just complicated to figure out who was attacked first, simply because they could have been shot first but died last because of where they were shot." Nines explained, he sounded slightly irritated by everything and how complicated it actually was. "Yeah... it's definitely complicated... but we'll figure it out." You reassured squeezing your hand down onto his arm.
"I know we shall, would you like to help me figure out where the shooter was stood when they shot the other two victims?" Nines questioned, you knew for a fact that he didn't actually need your help, but you wanted to help even if you basically did nothing. "I'd love to, even if you don't really need the help." You replied as Nines moved your hand from his forearm and placed his hand on your shoulders instead.
Then he gently pushed you backwards until you were stood over the evidence marker that you had placed between Nines's feet at the time, he then let go of your shoulder and made his way back towards the other two bodies. You stood there in silence letting him do his thing while his LED flashed yellow.
"From where you are stood there is no way the shooter could have hit the shot on him, which means the shooter moved from where you are... to about here." Nines declared while moving he was now stood about three steps away from you. "But to have made the shot from here he would have had to be sat up completely straight, like from shock. That means he was not the first person to be shot."
"I never would have been able to figure that out..." You admitted while with Connor and Hank you never really noticed how much smarter Nines actually was compared to Connor, it was actually really impressive. "Do not doubt yourself, I am sure you would have eventually, just not as quick as I have." Nines reassured giving you a soft smile.
"You're just being nice, right let's continue." You mumbled, before looking between the body at the bar and the one in the booth. "So the guy at the bar," you pointed behind yourself at the body, "was shot before the guy at the booth, but he died first. Would make sense because he was shot straight in the heart. You said he drowned in his own blood so it probably would have taken longer for him to die."
"Yes I believe you are correct. Now we must figure out where the last body was shot from." Nines stated his LED started flickering yellow, you just decided to watch him intently. He seemed so in his element right now. "Y/N, may you stand beside me?"
"Sure."
With that you stood so you were right besides Nines, he twisted his body slightly and held his arm out towards the area of the body on the floor. A frown crossed over Nines's face as he twisted his body back to how it was before still holding his arm out.
"After shooting the man in the booth, this man who he must have known stood to flee. So the shooter twisted his body and shot him, which grazed the waist." Nines informed you before turning his head to look at you.
"But he died right beside the booth, so he can't have gotten very far." You said to Nines who nodded, but then stepped forwards and moved you to where he was stood. "Your program doesn't need you to stand where they were you can reconstruct it yourself."
"Correct, but you do not have a program that does that. That is why I have been doing it. For you." Nines told you. 'He's been doing all of this for me...? He could have figured this all out by now if he wasn't explaining it all to me...' You thought feeling your cheeks warm up and your heart beat just a little bit faster. "I-I didn't realise... thank you." You mumbled turning your face away from Nines.
"It is okay, I believe that the shooter then stepped to the right two steps as to stop him running away that's when he was shot in the leg." Nines informed as he indicated for you to move to the right two steps. So you did that. "That's why the last shot was done at a closer range! Because he still wanted to try and escape so the shooter shot him in the stomach as he tried to flee!" You exclaimed biting down onto your bottom lip, happy that you had finally figured out what had happened.
"Now our next task is to figure out why these three and see if there's any evidence of the shooter." Nines informed you, you held a finger up and moved to find a pair of gloves so you could touch the bodies. "The one on the floor is probably the one who was the closest to the shooter if anyone has evidence on them it's him." You said while re-approaching Nines he had already lifted the body slightly, his LED flashing yellow as he scanned the front of the man's body.
"Is there anything?" You asked.
"There's fingerprints on the body, I have identified the shooter." Nines told you looking up at you with a small smirk on his face.
"We can hand the rest of this over to everyone else, go pick him up and find out why he did this all." You suggested raising an eyebrow at Nines daring him to choose your option, even though there was still plenty he could do here. "I believe that is a good idea, after all if he does not tell the truth I will know." Nines stated offering his hand that hadn't touched any blood out to you.
"Let's go..." You mumbled and the two of you went to find someone to hand over the information to. "Can I just say even though this might make me sound horrible... I'm glad this is different..."
"It does not make you sound horrible." Is all Nines said as he squeezed your hand that was holding onto his.
