eddie hadn't mean to to tell steve his birthday was soon, it just slipped out when the two of them were high one night in steve's room. well, their room, since eddie had officially moved in after asking his uncle if he would mind. of course, wayne said yes and made some cheesy remark about steve needing to protect eddie.
with the fear that steve's parents might just suddenly come back the two of them decided it would be best to live somewhere else. robin and nancy pitched in, all four of them paying their share of the rent for one apartment. sure it was small but they just got lucky and it had two bedrooms, they would have to share a bathroom but none of them cared that much. they were always around each other anyways so it wouldn't feel all that different.
slowly they had moved boxes into the apartment, it took forever and it was far too hot that day to be outside for so long. robin and nancy stayed for much longer than steve hoped because all day he had been anxiously planning. eddie said he didn't want anything for his birthday even before he had started dating steve.
"alright steve we're going to head out!! nance and i have some shopping to do"
robin winked at steve waved goodbye to him, she didn't actually have anything to do but she had convinced nancy that they should leave the two boys alone.
the room was quiet, except for the sound of eddie snoring on the couch. lifting boxes wasn't exactly his idea of a good birthday but he couldn't complain when he was under the impression nobody knew it was today. steve gently shook eddie by his shoulders not wanting to be too rough or scare him.
but instead of getting off of the couch he hits pulled steve down with him right onto his lap. he tried to get up but he was being held almost too tightly by his waist.
"don't go, five more minutes"
the sound of eddie's voice when he had just woken up was something steve heard every day, or after every random nap eddie decided to take. yet no matter how many times he heard it, it was still something he found so hot that it made him feel like he would pass out on the spot.
he never told him what kind of effect it had on him and he really hoped he would never notice, but steve felt his breath hitch just at the thought of it.
"steve are you okay- what the fuck"
as soon as eddie opened his eyes he was the most shocked he probably ever had be in his entire life. never in his wildest dreams did he ever think he would see steve harrington sitting on his lap wearing a black sabbath shirt. well the first part was easy to imagine since they had gotten together, and steve ended up being more clingy than expected. but the shirt? that was enough to make eddie blush so much he thought his heart might burst.
when steve finally realized what eddie was looking at he was in disbelief. not saying anything but his thoughts were definitely going somewhere.
"there is no fucking way, that i just turned my boyfriend on just by wearing a stupid shirt"
"holy shit baby what the fuck" that answers his question, as he felt eddie biting and kissing his neck like he was trying to make sure steve was still real.
"woah woah calm down hold..on, fuck" he was trying to get eddie to stop so he could tell him his surprise, but instead of moving he just moved his hands onto steve's hips and he couldn't think straight enough to move him.
"eddie! baby, please, stop i have to tell you something" catching his breath made his voice sound a lot whinier than he would've liked it to sound, he didn't want to sound desperate. not when he's trying to have a serious conversation.
"fine goddd you're the worst" eddie dragged on the letters in his words, something he does when he's trying to show he's joking. he could never actually think anything bad about steve, not even back when steven bullied him relentlessly.
"so...please don't hate me for this"
eddie put his hands up pretending to surrender, making steve laugh before he held both of his hands. he was extremely anxious, not wanting eddie to hate him for knowing.
"so you may or may not have accidentally told me todays your birthday, while we were high last time?"
eddie's expression was unreadable and steve dreaded what was going to come next, he assumed eddie would push him off and just leave and never come back. but none of that happened, steve looked at his boyfriend so confused as all he did was smile.
"well no duh, i trust you stevie, you're the only one who knows"
and if that didn't make steve's heart melt, nothing else would. he felt so unbelievably in love in that moment that all he could do was gently hold eddie closer to him just so he could kiss him.
"i got you something" he could already see eddie open his mouth to begin to tell him he didn't need to, so steve put a finger up to eddie's lips and shushed him.
"before you say no, i bought us two tickets to go see ozzy in concert. you know, since you never shut up about him"
when the words finally hit him eddie looked like a little kid on christmas morning, probably the most excitement he ever had visually shown.
"HOLY SHIT steve oh my god i love you i am so in love with you holy fuck you have no idea"
as eddie couldn't stop expressing his love for steve, he was kissing him all over his face in between each word. steve had to use his entire last paycheck to pay for this little surprise, but the smile on eddie's face made the whole thing worth it.
"when is it?"
he finally let go of steve's face, laying down to put his head in his lap as he stared up at his boyfriend in the most adoring way. steve was playing with his hair, giving him little braids before he leaned down to kiss him. it didn't really work well because of the way they're laying but it still made eddie's heart beat even faster.
"tomorrow night, i got us a hotel room and everything"
"you're spoiling me, harrington"
not knowing what made him say it, maybe it was just the moment, or maybe he really meant it steve let his thoughts slip out.
"you say my last name so often it might as well be yours too"
