Prologue

When you hear the word love usually you would think of sun-bathed roses, and nights of infinity with the love of your life. Birds chirping from high tree branches, or hearts beating as one as a Poe would say.
You wouldn't think of scars from being so madly in love that it hurts, or painful wracking sobs that tear out your heart piece by piece.
When two people are deeply in love they discreetly look out for each other in a crowd, they kiss and hug one another like the world was about to disappear under their feet.
His stomach would flutter with butterflies and her heart would beat a million times faster. Every softly spoken promise and drunken laughs off of fire whiskey was valuable.
She was valuable to him
And then every night when his love was in his arms he would kiss her head and whisper to her in a voice as small as a mouse, "thank you for loving me when I still taste like darkness and sorrow."
