Parting Words

PARTING WORDS

Mother, father, friends, fellows all lov'd, this hear

For I've left to probe death's forest most vile

To once more see my sweetheart dear.

For how am I to ever reconcile

Alive, these lost things mangl'd by mishap--

As this love, this pallid smile?

And while my ebbing life woe 'pon woe does sap

There's the ache, and the striving 'gainst the ache

Inflict'd by this wreath of ashes on my lap.

I go to find a place where me sorrow cannot break.

I go to find a place where pain can ne'er forth spring,

And where I and my love of trouble need not partake.

For she can nevermore of life's relish sing

For too long had been her weary wait.

For too long had been my suffering.

Therefore I go, and forsake this crumbling world of hate

Or whatever these final parting words might mean to you.

I go, and shall never hesitate.

But nonetheless, thank you for your loving true.

Yet our journey together ends here, and hence I bid adieu. . .
