THE LOST MUSE

I think my Muse has flown away

As have the pensive lights of day,

Yet still I know not yonder where;

She left these songs unsung and gone

Inside a heart that lay undone

And in a soul forsaken, bare.

My verse empty, the pen stone-blind

Mute the color that dye this mind

While my ideas sigh, unfreed--

Like pris'ners fettered, grim, unfed

It racks my core with thoughts unsaid

A poet's nightmare true indeed!

The stars and skies look dead and bland

Empty and trite the twilight strand

Without the Muse that should inspire;

For those emotions sans their mold--

Untold inside so dire and cold--

Is but a flame without the fire.
