"cheating doesn't start with sex, it starts with sneaky conversations"

Lies. That's all she can do, tell him lies. Sebastian didn't know where Victoria went yesterday. All he knew was that she had sneaked back into the house. Like he wouldn't notice. She usually never worked long, or was always on her phone. Lately, that had changed. She also took her phone everywhere as if she had something to hide. At first he had no reason to be suspicious, he was proud of his wife and that she could earn a bonus by hard work. Sebastian had voluntarily resigned from his job because of Liam, his young son. He had just turned three years old. The disciplined husband was able to work from home and at the same time take care of his son before he could go to a suitable daycare center. You were Sebastian's neighbor for six years. Five years ago Victoria joined and shortly after Liam was born. They were nice neighbors, even if you didn't get to see them that often. Victoria was on the move all the time, when she wasn't working, she was shopping or visiting her sister on the other side of town. You saw Sebastian playing with Liam in his yard or in the driveway when he washed his car. Mostly he did that shirtless or in a white tank top. Every woman in the adjoining houses wanted a piece of him, not excluding you. He was an incredibly attractive man. His wife was really lucky. But you never really exchanged more than a few words, except the day your husband cheated on you.

To this day, you couldn't remember how you got into your driveway without any damage. Your makeup was spread all the way down to your chin and your hands were tight on the steering wheel. A knock on your window ripped you out of your trance. Deep blue eyes looked at you. You hurriedly rub the mascara off your cheeks and let down the window. "Can I help you, Mr. Stan?" He leaned against your car and leaned down. "You look like you had a bad day." You laughed half-heartedly. "The neighborhood already knows, I guess." He nodded slowly. "Yes, I'm terribly sorry. My wife and I would like to invite you to dinner. We don't mind, and being alone on a day like this shouldn't be." You were very surprised by the offer, but you hid it pretty well under your face. "I'd like to freshen up a bit and then I'll gladly accept the invitation." He smiled and his white teeth flashed. He left you alone in your car and you took a deep breath. "Wow. I hate small towns." You took your things from the passenger seat and entered your house. Life was unfair, but you could also become an unfair player. In a matter of minutes, you'll storm through the house and pack your husband Patrick's things. All his clothes ended up in a big garbage bag and outside the door. You didn't pay attention to the expensive suits that shouldn't be wrinkled. Now you had nothing to lose. All the photos and all the jewelry he ever gave you, you throw into a big box. You took the roses and other bouquets from last week in both arms and ran to the trash can. Before the tears could get the upper hand again, you lit a match and made the flowers burn. Probably they were just gifts anyway because he was plagued by a bad conscience. After you also threw away his rest of his stuff lying around, you took a long shower. You should've seen the signs. Every time you smelled a different perfume on him or found lipstick scraps in his shirts. He talked himself out and blamed it on intrusive co-workers. But every time you visited his office, none of the women there wore such a perfume or that bright red lipstick. That suddenly changed when you called him this morning and a woman picked up the phone. He was supposed to stay at the office last night, working a night shift. The giggling and moaning female voice asking who was on the phone was confirmation of the lazy game he was playing with you.

It's been exactly two months since you kicked Patrick out. You didn't know how long it had been going on with the other woman, but you were glad you got a lawyer so quickly to file for divorce. After everything he and you went through, he could do this to you. You'd been trying to get pregnant for the past two years, but nothing seemed to work. It couldn't have been sex because you wanted to have a baby just like him. That's why you used to jump on him like a puma all the time. You were actually planning on pushing him out of your mind, but it was harder than you thought. To make matters worse, you also lost your job at the "I'll expose my husband" campaign. Thank God you saved up some money and sold some of Patrick's things. When you came back from shopping, suddenly a ball hit your windshield. Frightened, a small outcry escaped and you grabbed your chest to calm your beating heart. Sebastian came running over to you and raised his hands soothingly. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Liam and I underestimated his strength." He indicates behind him where his little curly image just caught the football out of your flowers. "Oh no problem, it's still all right and I just got scared. Who's winning? Do you make your dad look old?" you asked the little boy, and he grinned carefully before he nodded violently. Sebastian started laughing and asked Liam to go back into the garden. You took the groceries out of your trunk and wished them a lot of fun. "Oh wait, I'll help you." You lock your car. "Oh, I can do it." At that moment, a few apples fell out of your bag and Sebastian caught them smiling. "Oh, yeah?" He just took all your bags and followed you to your porch. You opened the door for him, and he walked into your kitchen like it was the most self-evident thing in the world. "Thank you, but that really wouldn't have been necessary." He waved off. "That was nothing." He looked around. "It's pretty bald." You nodded slowly. "I disposed of a lot of things that reminded me of him." "Understandable." he said softly. You started putting in the groceries and Sebastian looked out the window into his garden. Now he's guaranteed to think you're a crazy stalker. "Are you looking for a job?" he asked, pointing to the pile of newspaper advertisements. "Yes." you said out of breath. "I lost my job when I caught Patrick, and the search is harder than I thought." Sebastian leaned against the kitchen counter. "If you feel like you could work as a nanny for Liam. I have a few appointments coming up and our moms don't have time to take care of him. You'd help me a lot with that. I'll pay you well, don't worry." Nanny? Something like that didn't suit you, and besides, it could only fuel the desire for a child. "I'd like to sleep over it for a night and then let you know." He smiled. "All right. I'll get out of here." he pointed to his garden. "Let me beat at soccer." You had to giggle. "Give Liam good luck." Sebastian opened his mouth to an O and looked at you "I'll remember that."

That same night, you were in the kitchen to get a glass of water. At that moment, Victoria's headlights lit up your kitchen. You're looking at the clock. It was almost 1:00 in the morning. A realtor usually didn't work that long. For some reason, you hid behind your curtains and watched the pretty woman. She folded down the little games in the car and wiped her fingers along her lips. After that, she brushed her hair straight. You kept your mouth open. In your marriage, you've had a lot of moments like this yourself. Victoria had just fucked. But it was clear that it wasn't her husband. Sebastian didn't deserve this. You had gone through that hell yourself, and now his wife seemed to be cheating on him. Him. The uplifting anger in you broke the glass in your hand. Your decision was made.

"I'll do it. I'd like to be Liam's nanny and I need the money." Slightly smiling you stood next to Sebastian in his garden. A steaming apple pie in your hand. "Really? Oh that's great. Thank you. You're kind of saving my life." He tried to hug you, but then he took your apple pie instead. "I'll get some plates." Nodding, you looked after him. Liam was sitting in the sandbox, building a castle. With dinosaur figures in his hands, he was reenacting a fight. "Oh, that looks bloodthirsty. Why don't the knights from the castle do something about the dinos?" Liam looked at you smiling. "When the dinos lived, there were no knights yet." Amazed at his knowledge, you looked at him. "I baked a delicious apple pie. Would you like to eat a piece with us?" "Oh yeah. I love apple pie. But my grandma's is the best." Laughing, you stood up and helped him knock the sand off his overalls. "Well, let's see if I can maybe manage to bake something nearly as good as your grandma." Over the next few days you got to know Liam better and better. Sebastian left the house early and came back late at night. You hardly ever saw Victoria. It was rare that you had to put Liam to bed. But when you did, he wanted to hear a story. Every time it was the same story about a cat mum and her son who had lost his way one day. You felt that he was sad without his mum. He was very happy when Sebastian came home, though. After two weeks Victoria suddenly came home while you were playing Lego with Liam. "What are you doing here?" she asked angrily. Sebastian came through the door right after her. "She's helping me with Liam while you drive around the world instead of working." He pulled a low-slung cap off his head. "Are you spying on me?" "Yes, I have no other choice. You abandon me and your son every day. You never come home and when you do you sneak in in the middle of the night." She looked at him and swallowed. "Yeah, you thought I wouldn't notice?" For Liam, this was the wrong place. "Come on, let's go to your room and play," you said quietly to him and he nodded worriedly. You tried to calm him down and finally put a film in the DVD player. Quietly you slipped into the hallway to eavesdrop on the couple. "Where do you hang out all the time?" He crossed his arms. "I'm an estate agent. I have to go from house to house all day." she defended herself. "Oh yeah, and do you have to share a bed with clients too, or is that just your latest job?" She gasped audibly. "Why are you insinuating that?" She plays the innocent. "Insinuate? You think I don't see how swollen your lips are every night? Or that you put your clothes straight in the wash?" "Sebastian. I work hard to earn more money for our family." She went into another room. Their voices became quieter. You went down some stairs. "Family? Don't make me laugh. How many times have you put your son to bed in the last four weeks? Or made him breakfast?" She was probably about to say something, but Sebastian interrupted her directly. "I had to ask our neighbour to watch Liam so I could check if my wife might be cheating on me. She was cheated on herself and lost her job. You want to make a fuss about me or her? You don't have the right. I'm not doing anything illegal. I was just helping a neighbour." "I am innocent. I'm working and that's all." He held out his hand. "Then show me your phone." "You're ridiculous." He followed her. "If you have nothing to hide, then show me your phone," he said slowly. She looked at him for a long time. She walked into the hallway to her handbag. The vibrating in your pocket made you stop. A message from your ex Patrick. *I miss you. Let's try again. *

You just rolled your eyes, but answered anyway. *Did your affair break up with you?* It didn't surprise you that the answer was yes. Without further ado, you deleted his number. Sighing, you sat down in bed with Liam. The film was almost over, but he was already fast asleep. Something pricked in your pocket. You suddenly had a note in your hand. It was badly crumpled and seemed to have been in the washing machine before. You looked at the numbers with interest. It was a telephone number. The sweatpants used to belong to Patrick. Without further ado, you dialled the number. A loud ringing in the living room made you look up. Either it was a stupid coincidence or the mystery of the affair had just been solved. Uncertainly you ran downstairs and found yourself face to face with Victoria and Sebastian. You held up your phone. "I fished this number out of Patrick's pants." Tears burned in your eyes. Sebastian looked at his wife in disgust. "I bet I'll find a red lipstick and that sweet smelling perfume on you too Victoria, won't I?" your voice was barely a whisper. "Our neighbour seriously? Married himself and then destroying not one but two marriages?" Sebastian muttered. "Two?" Victoria asked, trembling. "Yes wife. Or should I say ex-wife?" Sebastian said incredulously. "We are done for the day. You can pack your things. And you can take it from me that I'm going to fight for Liam's custody." You had never seen the handsome man so upset. "Sebastian listen to me. Please. You can't split up." He shook his head vigorously and walked around to pack her things. "Why Victoria?! Why?" She straightened her shoulders. "I'm pregnant." Your and Sebastian's mouths dropped open. "WHAT?!" you said at the same time.
