Michael's POV
September 8, 1994
6:05 PM
We had just finished opening up the VMA's, and it couldn't have gone any greater. Knowing that Whitney and I are adored by so many of our fans and fellow entertainers just shows that love will always prevail over any lie the media tries to spew out.
Walking up to Robyn, Whitney asked, "Robyn? How did we do?"
Robyn answered, "Whitney, you and Michael were amazing! You two literally had that crowd on their feet. I'm telling you guys, you two are the couple of the century!"
With a smile, I said, "Thank you, Robyn."
Whitney said, "Yeah, girl! We appreciate it."
Robyn nodded and said as she began to guide us to our dressing room,
"Thank nothing of it! Anyways, now we gotta talk about how to get you guys in the audience as safely as possible. And I think the best way to do that is..."
As we were walking further backstage and Robyn kept talking, suddenly, Whitney stopped and gasped, grasping her stomach!
Concerned for her, I asked, "Whitney, are you alright?"
Robyn asked as she came by her friend's side,
"Girl, what's wrong?"
She went on to say with panic written all over her face,
"Uh, Oh!
Worried, I asked her, "Whitney, tell us what's wrong."
Whitney answered nervously, "I think my water broke."
Looking down, I saw a huge puddle of fluid where Whitney was standing.
Having a strong feeling, I asked, "D-Does this mean-"
Before I could even ask, Whitney looked me in the eyes and said with a nod,
"Yes, Honey... It's time."
My heart nearly stopped at that moment. Our baby was coming! Right here at the VMA's?! Before I could go into a full blown panic, I saw two of my bodyguards, Bill Bray and Wayne Nagin along with my manager Sandy Gallin standing by our dressing room.
Taking her hand, I said to my beloved fiancé as she began to breathe deeply,
"Okay... Okay."
Looking towards our bodyguards, I called out,
"Wayne! Bill! Sandy! Get over here right away!"
Wayne asked, "Yeah, boss?"
Bill asked, "What's up, Mike?"
Sandy asked, "Is everything alright?"
I tried to explain as calmly as possible,
"We need to get to the hospital. Whitney's water just broke and she's going into labor. Bill, I need you and Sandy to find my parents and Whitney's parents, and tell them to meet us at the hospital. Wayne, I need you to get Whitney, Robyn and I to the limo as quickly and safely as possible."
Wayne said, "Sure thing, Boss. I'll call the driver and let him know we're on our way."
Bill said, "And we'll go get your parents."
And with that, Bill and Sandy took off to find our parents and Wayne got on the phone to call the limo driver.
As they did so, I said to Robyn
"Robyn, I need you to call the hospital to let them know we're on our way."
Robyn said while pulling out her phone, "It's handled."
As she called the hospital, Wayne told me as he was putting his phone away,
"I just called the driver. He's just pulled up to the back."
Robyn said as she got off the phone, "And I just called the hospital. They'll be ready to admit you when you arrive."
Placing my other hand on Whitney's shoulder, I told her as Robyn and I began to guide her towards the main exit, with Wayne leading the way,
"Thank you, guys. Alright Whitney, everything's gonna be okay. Just take one step at a time... It's alright."
Once we made our way towards the exit, we made our way over to the limo as I helped Whitney climb inside as Robyn, Wayne and I climbed in after her. Once we were all in, the driver asked,
"Which hospital am I driving to?"
I answered, "Cedars-Sinai Medical Center."
The driver said, "Alright, we should be there in 16 minutes."
With that, the driver started up the limo and drove us away from the building. As we were doing so, I heard Robyn say while she held Whitney's hand,
"Deep breaths, Nip. Deep breaths."
Suddenly felt the limo stop and Whitney and I both looked through the windows to see the paparazzi blocking our paths!
I swear to God! Of all the times for them to be doing this!
Knowing we had to leave, Robyn said in frustration,
"Oh my God! You have gotta be kidding me! We can't have this right now!"
Before I could say anything else, I heard Whitney cry out in pain!
Knowing we had to get out of there, I exclaimed,
"Wayne, please! I need you to tell the paparazzi to move out of the way now! Otherwise, Whitney's gonna give birth in the limo!"
Wayne said, "Alright! I'm on it, boss."
Robyn said, "So am I!"
With that, Wayne and Robyn got out of the limo and shouted as he pushed members of the paparazzi back,
"Everybody, back up! Move! We've got a woman in labor here! Move now!"
Robyn shouted, "Back the hell off! Now!"
As we saw them flashing their cameras at us, all I did was focus all of my attention onto Whitney as she was now hunched over and breathing painfully.
I said to her as I moved my hand up and down her back comfortingly,
"Everything's alright, Whitney... Hang in there, Sweetie. We'll be out of here soon... I promise."
Once the paparazzi cleared the path, Wayne and Robyn raced back into the car. The limo driver stepped on the brakes real quick and were out of there and on our way to the hospital! And not a moment too soon!
