A/N: Bairn - is Scottish for child and is gender neutral.
The kids were face first in cereal and oddly quiet as Scrooge took his normal seat at the table. He watched over the edge of his newspaper, as they exchanged glances and shakes and nods of heads. This had been happening every day for a week and as bad and Scrooge wanted to ask what was the matter he knew to wait it out and let them come to him. It was Dewey that broke the silence.
"Uncle Scrooge, what would you do if you found out someone that worked for you was trans?" Louie's eyes cut to the blue triplet with a murderous gaze. Their uncle looked up from his newspaper, confused.
"What was that, lad?"
"If one of your employees was transgender? What would your reaction be?" Huey asked, invested. Louie sunk deeper into the hoodie.
"I'm afraid I don't know what that means." He folded the paper and placed it on the table.
"It means they were born a girl," "or a boy," "or a boy and now they're there not or they're the opposite." Dewey tried to explain, with a minor interruption from Huey.
"Oh!" Scrooge sounded shocked. "I didn't know there was a word for that. Well, I suppose it makes sense."
"Wait, what?!" Louie straightened in his seat. "You're like really old. I thought you wouldn't have heard of anything like that before!"
"Oi! Identical triplets run in the family." It took them a long moment to process that.
"Wait, are you saying that you and Aunt Matilda and Grandma are triplets?!" Huey asked. Scrooge nodded with a chuckle. As he confirmed it, Dewey and Louie's face contorted into a look of realization.
"So which one of you is it?" He looked over at them.
None of them answered. They all looked at each other with more faces of disapproval and exasperation. Clearly they hadn't thought they got this far.
"Well?" Huey finally pushed. "You've wanted to tell him for weeks."
Louie sighed in defeat, "It me. I'm non binary. It basically means I'm not a boy but I'm not exactly a girl either."
"Well, good on you for telling me. What do you want me to call you?"
"Louie and Lou is fine for now but I like they/them pronouns." The kid blushed.
"Alright, bairn, let me know if that changes and if I can help with anything."
"Well actually," Louie glanced towards Dewey for help.
"We aren't sure how mom is gonna take it." Then as after a beat he added, "Uncle Donald's know for a while."
"Donald and Della were raised together and by me. They should have nearly the same reaction," Scrooge said automatically.
"Well, Uncle Donald sorta cried," Huey said.
"Yea for daaaays," Dewey finished.
"What? Why?!" Scrooge was outraged at the thought.
"Weeelll. He found out by accident and because I didn't tell him sooner, he felt bad for miss gendering me. I tried to tell it was fine because he didn't know, but we sorta had to let him cry himself out." Louie explained.
"Which took daaaaays!" Dewey repeated.
"Yep. Do not want a repeat of that." Huey shook his head.
"Well, Donald has always been, er, softer than your mother. She should handle the news better."
"I hope so!" Louie plopped back into his chair.
After that their morning settled back into a normal reunion of loud chattering during breakfast instead of mysterious glances. Now they had something else to bond over. Della, in fact, did cry but only for a second. They were tears of joy and pride. Immediately she spent all her money on every pride thing she could find. It got to the point Louie almost regretted telling her.
