With Avery
Pain.
That's all Avery could feel at the moment.
Unable to move, speak, or even open her eyes without feeling pain scorching throughout her entire body.
It had been 8 hours of anxiously waiting and praying for Avery to wake up.
She barely peaked her eyes open at Zoe and gently squeezed her hand, that's all her body could handle at the moment.
She's been receiving various types of medication for pains and possible infections from cuts and other injuries, they have been crushing any strength she had to stay awake.
She tried to move her head to the side, aches growing from being in the same position for so long, when she shifted a bit she heard a comforting voice say "hey" and then the touch of someone on her head.
She was desperate to open her eyes, needing to know who was next to her.
"How are you feeling?"
Softness in the masculine voice gave Avery comfort.
Her eyes opened to meet the man next to her she struggled to stay awake but she kept trying.
"What are you doing here?"
"I had to see you... couldn't leave my favorite girl here alone"
He gave a genuine smile which Avery couldn't help but return.
"Thanks, Devin..."
He kissed her forehead.
"You should get some more sleep, okay? The doctor said not to wake you up"
She closed her eyes in response quickly letting sleep take her over.
Devin turned to Zoe who had been watching the two for almost an hour.
"I want to talk to you."
He whispered not wanting to wake Avery. He wasn't supposed to be in the room but the desperate beg got him through the door...
And the title of Devin Booker...
"I never thought I would hear you say that"
"Not the time" Devin stated.
They walked further away from her bed so they wouldn't disturb Avery.
"Talk."
"She wanted to go out and just clear her mind so I agreed..."
"And?"
"We decided I would be the DD... but I had some drinks and I didn't want her to be mad so I didn't tell her... On our way home I was just so tired, I couldn't keep my eyes open and the next thing I know there are headlights just coming at us"
"You were drunk?" His voice got louder.
"I wasn't drunk I only had a couple of drinks"
What was once a slightly composed man turned into yelling and anger. It's like Devin only saw red, and with good reason.
"A couple of drinks! You never fucking think so you Zoe!"
"It was an accident... I swear..."
"I don't care. Look what you did!"
He looked back to see if his outburst woke Avery up but she was too drugged up to be bothered.
"It's the same shit different year"
"Dev-"
"Get out."
Zoe left with tears running down her face, Devin didn't care he was too busy focused on what could've happened. what almost happened.
He finally got Avery back he wasn't about to lose her now... this time it would be different.
He looked down after feeling his phone vibrate.
He knew what it was gonna be, he was waiting for the text or call since the second he left.
Kendall: what the fuck!?
•••• TIME JUMP
Devin and Kendall sat in her kitchen both upset with each other.
They just fought, it wasn't unusual for them to fight it was actually rarer when they wouldn't.
They were always in each other's faces because the truth was neither one of them was happy.
Devin wasn't happy with his relationship and he felt Kendall just wasn't happy at all.
"You left me in the middle of the night to go be with your fucking trainer!" Kendall screamed while Devin sat there unfazed by her eruption.
After spending a few hours with Avery Devin flew to LA because Kendall went home that day. She had me screaming at him for a while now, he only came back to talk about their relationship, he knew he wouldn't be apologizing for leaving her that night no matter what she said.
"Why are you so in love with this girl!"
Devin chuckled only adding fuel to the flame.
"Are you laughing right now? Devin, I am so fucking angry right now!"
Devin broke out into a full-fledged laugh.
"Okay I can't do this anymore I'm out," he said laughing all the way to his car.
"Are you serious right now! Devin!"
He closed the door and finally got some silence.
He tried to call Avery's phone while backing out of Kendall's driveway.
"Hey, all-star" he recognized the voice that belonged to Zoe, and his smile quickly went away.
"I'm calling to talk to the most beautiful woman in the world" Zoe started to aw before Devin cut her off
"But her troll of a best friend answered... so fix that"
"Asshole. What do you want?"
"What's Avery doing?"
"She's sleeping"
"Oh, yea she's probably tired from your dumb ass almost killing her."
"I swear-"
Before she could respond he hung up and started laughing again. Somebody looking at him and how he's acting right now would think he was crazy and maybe they're right.
But to him, this isn't craziness this is happiness, something he hasn't had in years.
For the first time in a long time he felt good no he felt great.
He started the roughly 6-hour drive to Phoenix.
*back in Phoenix*
Devin pulled into the parking lot of Avery's apartment complex. He took a deep breath before he got out of his car.
He lightly knocked on her door and was met by a blonde who looked to be in her early 20s, he didn't know her name but he recognized her as a friend of Avery's.
He gave her a small smile before she moved to give him a silent invitation in.
He walked inside his eyes quickly landing on Avery who was asleep on the couch.
She had ice packs all over her body and she was surrounded by pillows, if she hadn't just been in a car accident 3 days before you would think she was very comfortable.
her bruises had gotten worse since he saw her in the hospital.
Her face was a little swollen and she had bruising all over her neck and down her chest.
His heart broke looking at her, he wasn't familiar with what he was feeling at the moment but it quickly overwhelmed him, for the first time in a long time Devin Booker felt sympathy for somebody.
He sat down next to her, careful not to bother the leg that was elevated also covered in a cast, she had fractured her left foot in the accident.
He brushed some hair out of her face.
"She's still pretty out of it," the woman behind Devin said.
He noticed the voice instantly, Avery's mother, the woman who saw him as perfect from the day she met him.
"Mrs. Niles, how are you?" He asked standing up to hug her.
"Shaken up, wishing better for my baby girl, But thankful things aren't worse"
He nodded agreeing.
He couldn't help but just look at Avery, watching her chest slowly rise and fall with every breath she took.
"How has she been?"
"She's in a lot of pain, we just got home this morning, all she wants to do is sleep.
She walked away better than anybody thought she would"
He gently put his hand on hers.
"How long is she gonna be like this?"
"A few weeks then when she's a little stronger they will start physical therapy, she should love that" she joked.
"But her ribs have to heal first, she broke one and bruised a lot."
She patted his leg before standing up.
"Well, now that she has another babysitter I'm gonna go take care of other things around here if that's alright with you?"
"Of course go ahead" Devin smiled.
He leaned back giving Avery a light kiss on the side of her head before leaning down
"you wanna wake up for me beautiful?" He whispered in her ear.
Her only response was resting her head on his shoulder without even opening her eyes.
He smiled kissing her again.
They stayed like that for a few hours with Avery's mom coming back a few times taking ice off of her and readjusting her.
Avery tried to move around only to be met with pain all over.
She quietly rasped in discomfort which woke Devin up.
"No no don't move, you'll hurt yourself" he gently held her still.
"What do you need I can get it for you"
"My leg hurts," she said grabbing at her leg.
He got up helping her adjust her leg, putting pillows under it to make her more comfortable.
"Better?"
She nodded laying back against the couch already looking tired again.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like I got hit by a car," she says with her eyes drooping and dried tears on her cheeks.
"Well I think I know why..." he thought humor would help... he was wrong.
"Well you gotta hurry and get better the season starts soon and I kinda need a physical therapist"
She snickered.
"Yea you do, since the Suns just lost one"
"What? You're gonna get better in time it will be fine" he reassured her.
"That won't matter"
He frowned "What do you mean?"
"I got fired..." she laid back again, the conversation clearly tiring her.
Devin couldn't help but feel anger over the news, he knew she would most likely get in trouble but didn't think they would go as far to fire her.
"That's fucked up, I'll talk to them"
"Don't bother I don't want it anymore"
"When did this happen?"
"When I was at the bar. They called me to let me know "I'm just not the right fit" In their words"
He watched as she struggled to keep her eyes open. He grabbed a blanket and covered her with it.
"You get some sleep we can talk later"
