"so, uh..." kuroo spoke, though he had no words to actually say, nobody did. all they could do is stare at the view in front of them. it was unexpected for sure, something that had never happened before - but by the look on daichi's face, they could see how important this was to him. "what now?", he whispered.

"you tell me" asahi whispered back, rubbing his temples with his fingers.

the units were back at base, it was quite hectic at first, but now things had settled down. the hallways and spaces were empty, the personnel that had no further work were allowed to go home to their loved ones and the comforts of their own spaces. bokuto had locked himself in with the remaining live targets, getting every single ounce of information from them, while kenma was still working on the encryption.

the office spaces and the lounge that they found themselves in were quiet, serene almost. from this distance, you could no longer hear the noises coming from deep within the town, where the building had crumbled by now. matsukawa sought revenge and it was obvious with the way that he set the building on fire first, letting everything burn and then... six massive explosions, most of them situated by the support of the building, letting it all go down.

though, the biggest issue, at least from some of their point of view, was now in front of them. four children, all boys, sleeping calmly on the sofa in the lounge. they were all cuddled together, the bigger boys protected them from both sides, holding onto each other tightly as to not be separated. daichi looked at them with sadness and agony in his eyes, remembering his own experiences just by looking at them.

they don't deserve this. they are kids. sweet boys. how could and why would anyone even take them away? were they kidnapped from their loving families? how do the parents feel? have they forgotten their past? and how long have they been living in that small room with little to no comfort? it was hard to tell.

the moment they were put in daichi's warm car, it was as if though they relaxed, and as interested as they were in the outside world, the warmth of the car and the radio playing quietly soothed them into sleep. and now they were here, at the home base, the front of the organization.

"what are you going to do?" hanamaki asked as he approached daichi, trying to read his facial expression but to no avail. there was a mixture of feelings both positive and negative.

"good question..." he answered. he rescued them, but what now?

"i could take one? i guess? for a day or two? kenma wouldn't mind too much, i think" kuroo said as he took out his phone, typing a message to kenma who was somewhere in the building, working on deciphering the codes.

"yeah, same here. though, our apartment contains a lot of bad things" hanamaki agreed. "mattsun would not be happy, but he has no choice"

"i wanna say i could take one, but my penthouse is too dangerous for a child. perhaps i could scour through the apartments that the organization owns, maybe we could put them in one?" asahi wondered, he did want the best for them, but his living space was not suited for children, especially not with nishinoya already being rabid and running the place.

"wouldn't that be the same as what they already had? alone in a place?" kuroo wondered, still waiting for a reply from kenma. " i don't know... this is complicated..."

"i took them. they are my responsibility. i will take them, plus, i wouldn't want them separated" daichi finally said, making everyone turn to him. "i have some things in mind..."

"boss!" suddenly a voice echoed through the corridors. a somewhat short form approached them quickly, a phone in hand and out of breath. kenma had clearly read kuroo's message and rushed to see what exactly was going on.

"oh, kenma, right on time" daichi turned to him.

"what is it?" kenma felt kuroo's hand on his shoulder, squeezing it just tightly enough to let him realize that daichi was serious about whatever he was going to say.

"i need you to go through mp group's database. find anything about these kids and their parents. i picked up some documents from the vault. i'll deal with those myself. kiyoko has already collected dna samples, so i am waiting on those..." daichi explained.

"you want us to go that far for these kids?" kenma asked nonchalantly. not like he couldn't do all that, it just seemed excessive. "wouldn't it be better to just bring them to an orphanage?"

"no. how will i explain why i have these four small children that i suddenly want to give away? it's more complicated than you think, for all we know, their birth might not have even been recorded... " daichi sighed loudly. "find out anything you can and report to me"

"...okay, got it" kenma answered, there was no arguing with daichi.

"so, i got what you asked" ennoshita suddenly appeared behind them. in his hands was a bag full of things that daichi had asked him to acquire, though, it was the first time in his life he had ever taken these kinds of things. "i got a set of clothes for all of them and a couple of plush toys as you asked"

"thanks. you all know you have a day off tomorrow, right?" daichi turned to everyone. he watched as they nodded in unison, both happy and unhappy by the fact that he had no work tomorrow. except for bokuto, he would definitely be working tomorrow and the day after and so on and so on, until he gets what he wants, he is not leaving.

"yes boss, and you too. don't rush to work first thing in the morning" kenma gave daichi a weak smile that daichi did not return, he was more focused on the children on the sofa.

"yeah... i know" he said quietly. after a few more phrases exchanged, daichi figured he should get the kids to his house, so far it was the safest place for them, in case somebody decides to come after them. though he wasn't exactly thrilled about that, he couldn't think of a better option, they were his responsibility now, he should at least try and provide a good place for them while he can.

he depended on kenma to find their families, in that case they could all be returned to their loving families witout much fuss. still, however, other scenarios existed that daichi did not want to think about but still had to consider anyway. as he finally got all of them in his car and drove away, he found himself somewhat at peace.

usually, on his way back he would drive in silence, listening to his surroundings and gathering his thoughts for the day - what will he do tomorrow? what action should he take? what company, group or organization should he look into next? but now, hearing the boys peacefully snoring away, he couldn't help but turn on a radio station, playing songs quietly to soothe the atmosphere. his eyes kept glancing at the rearview mirror, just to make sure the boys were still sleeping.

somewhere along the way one of them woke up, he yawned and looked around, probably surprised that he fell asleep and woke up in different cars. "sleep well?" daichi asked and watched as the boy looked at him, his small body tensed up for a second. daichi slowed down the car and turned to them for a second. "it's still me" he said.

as the boy lowered his gaze, letting his dark hair fall on his forehead, he nodded. "mhm... sleep well..." he spoke quietly. daichi's heart jumped at hearing him speak, shaking the lock on the cage inside of daichi that had locked away some emotions. emotions that daichi himelf shunned away in order to be able to focus on his job, in order to not hold personal grudges like the rest of his friends.

"we'll be at the house soon, okay? can you wake up your friends for me?" daichi asked before turning back to the road, driving down a familiar lane. the quiet street was filled with people lurking around, watching daichi and making sure no one goes after him. well, at least you know you are never alone, right?

daichi heard their quiet voices whispering around in the backseat and as he looked in the rearview mirror he saw them all waking up, rubbing their sleepy eyes and yawning. the dark haired boy and the blond boy looked the most alert, they were also the biggest of the bunch. the smaller boy with freckles as daichi noticed before was the quietest out of all, he also liked observing. the orange-haired one was the most energetic and it seemed as though the others trusted his judgment.

as daichi pulled into the driveway of his house he had yet to experience what these four boys will bring into his life.
